Martina Hingis dominated tennis before the William's sisters showed up. They sent her to an early retirement.

to watch Serena's US Open matches in 1999 was unreal. You had to be there. Something was in the air...you could feel a shift happening.

Great content. Serena won so much, yet i feel she under achieved. If she hadn't underwent that knee surgery in 2003 which reduced her speed, things could have been so different especially on clay. She also didn't take the game seriously between 2004-2007. Her ranking dropped outside the top 100 which prompted Chris Evert to write an open letter to her. She wasted those years which was supposed to be her prime. She's so talented. She's an updated version of prime Monica Seles. People claim advancement in science help her win slams in her 30s, but how come those advancement didn't help others. For the past 20 years only a handful of women have won slams in their 30s namely Serena, Li na, Flavia Penneta and Angelique Kerber. The rest won it in their early 30s. Only Serena won in her mid 30s. Why didn't This advancement help Clijsters, Henin, Venus and other talented players from her time. Some people are just generational talent. They are built differently. Just like the big 3 on the men's side. I really doubt anyone will win 20 slams in our lifetime . Modern tennis is very gruelling.

Serena was dealing with very serious injuries and depression. Serena was not able to take tennis seriously.

Plus her sister Yetunde's passing (being shot)... It was so weird around that time how the tennis critics talked so badly about the Williams Sisters, saying they weren't as committed as the others. It's like they never seemed to consider everything she and Venus were going through. I also believe it was taking time she needed away from the game that allowed her to play so long without being burned out. She and Venus outlasted all the players of their generation basically.

I don’t think Serena was being petulant and purposely uncommitted in 2004-2007. She took an extended break after Wimbledon 2003 to heal her knee after surgery, grieve Yetunde’s death (which both Venus and Serena are both very sensitive about, even to this day), and deal with whatever other mental health things were going on during that time. It’s clear she was more vulnerable emotionally on court during those years. Why? I don’t think any of us will ever know. But she came back in 2004, before she was physically ready to (my opinion), and encountered a tour that progressed in her absence, new top players, and more ways for her opponents to scout her without actually being at her matches (matched were more readily available for viewing and data analysis is something that continually gets better year by year in sports). Things compounded for her during that time - being less fit led to more injuries and less winning, her confidence declined because of what the media was saying about her and the losses to players she would normally beat. Ultimately her mental health with respect to tennis was impacted by everything going on. She needed the break from late 2005 to the summer of 2006 to heal from the injuries of 2005 and center herself emotionally so that she could come back and be mentally ready to put the work in and compete at her highest level again. It was a process that ultimately led to her 2008-2010 form, before she stepped on that broken glass after Wimbledon in 2010.

I agree with you about the 2012-2017 stretch of form and to some respect the 2018-(early) 2021 form. She’s a different type of athlete. She’s special with respect to her skills but also what she’s able to get her body to do, regardless of how technically fit she is. I think she was fittest in 2013 actually, but then she overplayed during that year and we saw a bit of a dip in fitness from 2014-17, albeit, not too much of a dip, given the 6 singles slams she won between 2014-17. Serena from 1999-2003 was super fit, but she was a young woman during that stretch. Looking/being fit wasn’t as difficult for her. In 2013, she was in her 30’s and was probably the leanest she was ever was post-2003. For me, the fact that in her mid/late 30’s, she came back to professional tennis after giving birth at an advanced maternal age (scientifically speaking), having the complications she had postpartum, speaks to and highlights how special she is as an athlete. She wasn’t ever able to regain the fitness and form necessary to compete on a regular basis after Olympia’s birth, which impacted her confidence during those four slam finals. She needed match wins and momentum going into those slams, which she never got. It was always so stop and start post-Olympia. I think she mentioned needing more practice playing finals in 2019 or early 2020. Regardless, getting to those 4 slam finals, 2 slam semifinals, and 1 slam quarterfinal, was quite the accomplishment, even if she didn’t win that elusive 24th slam.

Should this be titled, “Top Wins Against Hingis,” instead? Their 1998 Miami match and 2001 AO matches should be on a Top 5 list, even if Serena lost.

Naw, she didn't she still won after her injuries. She always had a hard time beating Serena. That's why she retired, it had nothing to do with injuries. She said, she could not win any more. The players were too big...she was talking about the Williams' sisters.
