Self Sufficiency Lesson from Africa

Ойын-сауық

This is a little piece of our Off Grid Homestead 2.0, and we've learnt a critical self sufficiency lesson from the Maasai people of Africa.
Fresh, raw milk is a fantastic food. It's as close to a whole food as you can get, meaning you could survive on a diet of almost entirely milk. We're not preppers, but having a milk cow will give us the food security to ride out any storms.

My grandparents lived on a farm. During the US depression, they never lacked for food. They had a veg garden, chickens, turkeys, cows, pigs. They had all they needed. Once a month they would go to town for coffee and sugar. This was a normal lifestyle for that time. Most have forgotten and left that life behind. The ones who know, need to teach the younger generation those forgotten ways.

When i was 10 yearsin 1974 old we went to Zeeland(Netherlands)on a holiday. And every day my dead and i went to the neighbour dairy farm bying fresh raw cowmilk. After cooling off, there was big layer of cream. and me and my little sister scooped(read stole) it off with a spoon. That was heaven.

I appreciate the fact that you can see what's coming to our Canada. So many will be shocked and in trouble during this transition. I've been through so much, and I'm too old to panic, so I've done a great deal of preparing. The hard part is watching all the innocent suffer while they tighten the screws. I feel it's very important for you to share detailed exposure to your independent life/journey so others can learn. Condensing the critical structure will be a blessing to those who may not have the time or smarts to watch all of your posts. I admit, it's been a pleasurable learning experience as well as entertaining, taking the time to look back at your content. Many envy your choice of lifestyle, and you should be proud to continue to share, teach, and be a bit goofy about it!

I lived that life my entire early years we didn't have much but we didn't go hungry. Two parents ten kids. big, big garden, a dozen head of cattle for milk and meat. A couple of pigs, hens for eggs and meat, ducks, geese. and a lot of work. It was a simple life but it worked.

You may want to grow goose neck squash to chop up for your milk cow. She will give milk like you’ve never seen. Just chop it up and add it to the treat you give during milk. Be careful, they get addicted….lol!!!

Glad your back from down south: safe and healthy👍 The importance you say about Milk: is so accurate. Most of bigger cities don’t drink much milk. Having your own milk producer= survival of small health scare pops up etc.

I'm in south west france. We've a small dairy farm on the corner of the long rural road we're on. Raw milk as we need or want. Liquid gold - milk is a whole food. We help ourselves and leave a coin on the table. I've read 90% of all cheese in france is raw milk, so raw for us is totally normal and healthy. BTW, our farmers are moving to fast growing crops since the weather is not hotter but actually cooler, summer is shorter. I think they've switched to clover for one of their summer crops - they plant three a year. Loving how beautiful your spring is, my favourite time of the year! 100 % do the full video you suggested.

It was my understanding that the nomadic herdsmen, like the Masai, harvested blood in the same way as the milk of their animals, and consumed both fluid foods in their peripatetic way. Brilliant system when it is so hot and there is no way of storing nutrition better than using the animal to do so. Jeff's thought of showing the homestead system would get my vote, and a sort of day-in-the-life where you show your daily tasks and chores also.

I get a kick out of the whole "prepper" mentality and how many of them act like this is the latest greatest way to deal with the current set of issues facing us. And they balk at the idea that being prepared is a term coined almost 200 yrs ago. They want to argue with me about it! And I just shake my head and say: "You were never a boy scout or a girl scout, were you? " The answer is "no". So, of course, they never knew the scout motto. And that motto is "Be Prepared".

Great to know you have been to my country Kenya. Maasai culture has created enough curiosity all over the world which has helped to market Kenya as a destination. Considering where humans are as a civilisation, I hold a view that this tribe's ignorance is commodified and exploited with little returns and impact on their education and health. I hope you learned that they still practice female genital mutilation and under age marriage of girls. I hope you had time to visit other parts of our country. I am Adam also but not a Maasai. Welcome again.

It is very hard to butcher a friend. We raised one (Homer) but when it was time, we had to trade him for one that was already butchered.
