Jeff I made this exact argument for years but most people have the delusion that you must have a septic system and city water to be civilized. I am starting in a few months my 100% off grid tiny retirement home in the Arkansas Ozark's with the same goal as you guys. 0 debt. I have learned sheep will follow in all aspects of life but thinking and doing outside the corporate norm will always produce a better life.

I used the outhouse everyday until I was around 18 years old. It could get very cold in the winter and you sometimes get a frosty seat. Best solution for that is to let someone else go first and warm the seat, Lol. Thanks for another educational video, Abby made me smile!!

We used an outside composting toilet for years. As we got older, I decided to put in a septic system. I rented an excavator over labor day weekend and trenched the line, dug the hole , set tank, installed leach field, backfilled everything and seeded. I still had time left on the machine so I dug a root cellar. Total cost $3500.00 US. You don't need all the pump nonsense if you site your house properly to let gravity do the work!

On a previous house we built we drilled 6 wells before we hit water. This was in the early 2000's so it was cheaper but we were still $60k into five empty holes and one that only made a gallon a minute. Ended up moving into our shop so we could save money to drill well holes. If you want a sick feeling hand someone $10k for nothing but a mound of dirt beside an empty well hole.

However, I’m teaching them a lot of gardening, canning, cooking and frugal living even in the city, to hopefully help them in their future.

In Australia - "most" rural households rely on rainwater collection for domestic water - in the driest continent - that includes flush toilets and septic systems. - A composting outhouse, rustic but not necessarily disease inducing, nor smelly (in-tune with nature) - what is to lose - a composting toilet has less land requirement than any septic leach field...

We were going to do a regular outhouse, dig the hole, put in the culvert, a little shack on top, however, you changed our minds. We have a well as we are lakefront, so water was no issue. And i built our Septic system and it works good, at a very reasonable cost. That said, we are going to build our outhouse similar to yours, only thing is we are building a Sauna and outhouse in the same building above ground, with a wall between each part. The Sauna and toilet will be separated with an uninsulated wall, to allow the heat from the sauna stove to keep the outhouse portion warm, or a small propane heater if not using the sauna. Thanks again for the great idea our garden will love it too. Cheers

Greetings, my well is 300' and cost $10k. I installed my own septic system for $7k. I have a 5000 watt solar system with 8000 watts of inverter. My well runs fine. We are totally off grid with no power on the area. Our township does not allow a outhouse as a primary waist system. We built our first 1500 square foot house for $5,000 40 acres of sizable reprod and a LT40HD woodmizer is what worked for us. That was 30 years ago. You have raised wonderful daughters in the woods of freedom and my wife and I raised 6 sons the same way. God bless you and your family in Jesus name.

I've done a lot of projects in recent years in Maine that have included wells and septic systems. Prices in the last 2-3 years have surely gone way up, but I'm _shocked_ when I hear the price differences between the west and the east (in the US). I have family in Washington state and septic & well prices are bonkers out there compared to where I live. My current project included 2 drilled wells and a septic leach field for 3 1 bedroom cabins and a barn with 3 employees (the site is a flower farm with vacation rental cabins). The leach field was more/less $30k, and there are 2 septic tanks the buildings drain into that were $8k each. I drilled two wells, one to 420' one to 270'. The 420' well was abnormally deep, 270' is more typical. The cost of wells have gone up considerably with these being a bit under $30k (the bulk of that being the 420' well that also needed to be fractured to flow more water). Three years ago I did a well for $7k.

This definitely puts it into perspective! I'm wondering what kinds of permits one needs here in my county to have an outhouse. I'm sure there's something! Seems like an acquaintance that built offgrid here said they don't want you to have a residence without a well or being hooked up to the power grid (and septic). Defeats the purpose, which is what govt wants!

You're absolutely right about things costing ridiculous amounts and avoiding debt. HOWEVER, it doesn't HAVE to cost that much. I just had a 1,500 gallon septic system installed for $5,500. I'm having my cabin and workshop wired for approx. $5k (over 3,000 sq ft). I got bids for over $15k on the septic and I'm sure someone would have been glad to rip me off on the electric too but I met good people and I do any of the labor they'll let me. So, the cost of things are crazy but a lot of it is greed and some of it is ridiculous government regulations (we don't have much of that in Kentucky). I bought 20 acres on a river and am building a cabin, separate workshop and barn and expect to come in at less than $250k (debt free). That's not bad in a world where people pay $400k for a 2-3 bedroom in a subdivision so it's still possible to have nice things. I think you're right about debt though, it is to be avoided like the plague and IMHO we're about to see a lot of people suffer because of it.

Well prices are high in the states as well. I am surprised about the cost of a septic system. I would think the big cost for you would be the delivery of the tanks, distribution box, leech field piping and gravel. I had to have my tank replaced about 7 years ago and it cost me around $2500. The prior tank (installed by the original owners) was metal and completely rotted away, plus there was no leech field (only a pipe going to the back of the property), so the contractor dug a trench and a hole and filled the hole with gravel and made me a dry well. I will need to have a leech field installed in the near future. All I need to do is have a perc test done, which I can do myself and then an engineering drawing of the field for the appropriate amount of footage of the leech field. Those close to bodies of water, rivers and streams or other houses will have to have a more sophisticated septic system installed that would cost much more.

I went throught this a while back design in my area was literally a sketch drawn plan on a piece of paper where the items were going. excavation wasnt that deep and we could have dug it up using shovels in about a month or two but luckily a friend lent us an excavator for a day. tanks, plastic(concrete are being phased out) in my area and only needed one pipe?(i guess plumbing?) sand/gravel this is what you need to draw into the plan as well, they tell you how much you need dont know anything about lift pumps, we have to call to get it pumped if needed this to me seems like the price of offloading the work. Too nuts but my experience is WA state codes and prices total was around $12k freedom units funny memory this triggered, there was another friend(lower elevation) that spent about a year digging a well with a shovel. Every day after work he spent 3 hours just digging, crazy...

Have you thought about a homebiogas digester? Really cheap, and gives you endless gas for cooking etc.

I can remember back when I was just a little guy, almost everyone in the countryside had outhouses.

Difference between composting toilet inside house and outhouse in the great outdoors? Beyond having to empty on a more regular basis? Bad experience with critters at family cabin outhouse at a tender age so more of a composted toilet in protected area fan…

I use a composting toilet, but mine is INSIDE. NO smells or insects ever. How? I use a plastic 5-gallon bucket with an $8 snap-on toilet seat & lid, but (and this is KEY) I don't do my business in the bucket! I do my business in a tall plastic kitchen trash bag with draw strings that I place INSIDE the bucket. My bucket stays clean and dry. Everything else is the same. I use it and change out the bags weekly. They go into a dedicated compost bin or sometimes into any convenient waste can - like the one provided at my gas station. I buy some gas and leave a little sealed-up bag in the trash can next to the gas pump. I've done this for years. I let the "humanure" compost 2 years before spreading it on pasture. I raise cattle. Edit: I don't compost the plastic bags. I slice the bottom, dump the contents and pyrolise the plastic in a solar-powered retort, which turns plastic into fuel.

First I just love you guys really do. What a team! I too live in Can. OK sit down this will hurt some maybe. I installed my septic for 3k but I had a backhoe. tank was $1300. PVC and sand fitting etc. $1700. You can put in a dug well basically surface water well, as only use it for flushing the toilet. Use concrete well liners. Puhase a couple for $400- $600 depending on depth. 12 volt transfer pump $50. The toilet would be gravity-fed as it is higher than the tank. You may be convincing yourself of this and don't mind roughing it. But I'm sure that ur wife and daughters feel much differently. Wait until you get older... ur still a buck. When ur bones start aching no one likes cutting logs in the freezing cold. The women in ur life deserve this. Thats under 4K Wouldn't that be the best anniversary gift ever... rofl 🤔😂

The Well I can understand... but if you just watch a few youtube videos, you can set your own septic tank pretty easily. The hardest part would be all the digging. If you had your own little excavator, then you would have it beat-- all it takes is time. If you could borrow a friends excavator or back hoe, etc.. Or you could RENT one.. You could plan it out and with non-stop digging.. You could probably get the tanks set and dig all the leaching lines out in maybe 2 weeks.. it's really not that hard. You don't have to use concrete tanks.. They sell big plastic septic tanks for around a thousand each.. Plus you have that hill where you could direct some runoff if needed.. and minimize the amount of lateral lines needed for the leech field.. You could definitely do it yourself-- if you just had easy access to water.
