Sega's Forgotten Street Racer | Piece of Shift
Ойындар
Sega released an obscure street racing game in 2008. Was it just a weird experiment or a proper continuation of Sega's racing lineage?

I like to think that there's someone out there who completed the game 100% on memory card and is very proud of it with fond memories

Game over yeeeaaahhh
FINALLY. A "racing game you've never heard of" video about a racing game I've ACTUALLY never heard of. I'm going to enjoy this.
Feels like something that was made because Sega wanted their own WMMT type game.

And now Initial D the Arcade is more Maximum Tune-esque compared to the previous Initial D titles, with 4-way VS and wider courses overall (and the introduction of Porsche, the first and only non-Japanese make, though this is mostly because of Wangan Midnight and MF Ghost promos).

yea but Initial D Arcade Stage exists

@@r3uvsgaming Even then, you get a different experience from both installments. Initial D being more technical brake-to-drift type stuff typical in Sega's prior arcade racers, with Maximum Tune being known for floaty and often very chaotic VS battles. EDIT: I think what I find curious is Honda's presence in this game given how hesistant they were licensing their cars out to street racing games in the 2000s. It might be because there are neither police chases nor a focus on expressway racing (the reasons behind Honda's absence in Midnight Club and most NFS titles prior to 2015, as well as Maximum Tune pre-5DX+ + Shutokou Battle respectively). For context, what people think went on with Toyota WAS what happened with Honda in the 2000s. Honda vehicles were still present in NFS Underground 1/2 as well as touge racing games like Kaido Battle, Initial D, and Battle Gear, likely as Honda Civics and Integras had an infamous reputation for usage among expressway racers in Osaka specifically.

@@ArbitraryOutcome SCUD Race is a Sega game that is probably the most technical of these types of games, with a drift system that's very much about control. You can't just slam the brake to drift or shift from 4th to 1st to 4th like in, say Daytona. Aside from F355 Challenge which is essentially a full simulation with no drifting, it's the most challenging arcade racing game I can think of.
I loved this game. It's basically NFSU meets Outrun. The handling was a bit jank, but I love love LOVE the accurate-to-real-life maps and just the cheesiness of it. Great game.
this is like that one Fast & Furious arcade cabinet racer mixed with Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune's memory card progression system i love it
I've played this on the arcade machines, all the flashes you see on the subwoofers in the back would flash the actual speakers on the arcade machine. The whole machine was *JUST* as flashy as the game itself, lights, molded plastic, force feedback hard as heck with the wheel, the works, it was really really cool to play.

Sounds amazing
i remember watching videos about R-Tuned some months ago and i was impressed by how arcade-like the bodykits are in that game an R34 kit that makes your car look mid engined a gigantic supercharge blower for an R32 this game is essentially the real life equivalent of what an 8 year old imagines cars to be
Man if i was i kid and this arcade game was at my local arcade id probably start crying everytime my mom says we gotta leave. I wouldve been glued to this

Facts. I was just caught in a moment thinking I was a kid again. I panicked and everything when he was talking about the unlock system lol
Thank you for the video. I played this during my trip to US in 2010, and the only thing I didn't remember was the title. It was so wild to have a quite heavily modified car (from visuals to performance) to be given from the first place, and the two nitro buttons that gave me similar sense to the nitros in early f&f movies. I greatly enjoyed it but unfortunately that was the only time I got to play it at an arcade, and unless I go abroad or buy the cabinet I don't think I'll be able to re experience this game in 'genuine arcade' way.
I remember watching them playing this game although I have never played it. It is just like when Outrun 2 met Fast and Furious.
There needs to be a person out there that keeps track of these obscure arcade games and has a map on where they can be played. Never heard of this, but it looks AMAZING! You know FUN? So many games forget about the fun part of it.
A street racing/tuner car game with OutRun 2 -like physics sounds like a lot of fun. It's interesting how you can see the game's origins in stuff like that race finish cutscene.
Once I remembered playing this back in the early years when this game was launched (2008). Kinda wanted to say that this looks like what happened when SEGA made NFS Underground or portray early 2000s tuning scene. Sadly though any of the arcades that had USR here in Indonesia does not have any vendors who sells USR cards, so it's basically cardless plays the whole time. Btw you should try publish a video about Sega Race TV too: made by SEGA in the same year and focuses on racing convertibles on a TV show.

God damn i remember Sega Race TV. you got to make your rank 1 place higher than the previous race. From third, to second and finally first place Each character dictates the color of your car and i picked Jane because she's cute. It turns out i got pink color 😂 It uses Code system to save your progress and the same code works for both EN and JP version. I think i still save my maxed Pink RUF code somewhere

There was an arcade that sold Ghost Squad card but that arcade (inside a movie theatre) was zapped to oblivion for more room in 2018 onwards, and all movie theatres follow since then. Shame because arcades in theatres tend to be well-maintained money makers.
I actually first knew this game months ago when I found the cabinet in person in our local mall. It was at the budget store, unplugged and stowed away at the kid's play area section. It caught my eye, cuz it felt like looking at some sort of time capsule given how the street racing genre isn't as popular as it used to be now. Part of me wishes I could just bring that machine home.

I got a pickup truck where the mall at? Just load it in the truck and leave
Love the turbo outrun and virtua racing name input at end. (soundtrack in the back ground....) Nice job. It was a joy recognising the background music's each time.
Finally someone talked about this game (and grid arcade as well) Keep it up dude!!
This is the first video I’ve seen by you and gotta say you did good dude
these are great videos bro keep em coming
I Wish it was a PS2 Game
Happy to see this video getting the views it deserves, hope to see more videos like it
Great video, I never knew this existed!! The soundtrack sounds pretty good, I gotta give the whole thing a listen sometime
I was never aware of this!! Thank you for the upload!!!👍😊
Nice to see someone talking about this! I remember playing it back then at an arcade somewhere in Florida? Game's pretty heckin good.
Yet another great looking arcade-exclusive Sega game I will probably never play. Such a shame they never release these games.
I’ve been watching and studying this game for years. Never played but, I love it! Really gives me of NFS Underground vibes. I just want to see all the cars Lvl 1-6.
Great video & presentation, thanks.
Great video man. You should continue covering more arcade racers
You should take a look at Sega Race TV sometime, Yu Suzuki's final Sega arcade racer.
Back in 2008, they did not have the same save cards we have today. Back then, you had a flimsy paper card that you can only use a certain amount of times before the game tells you to re-write the data onto a new car. This was common in maximum tune up and initial D. Now a days, we use plastic cards with built in RFID chips which is even better because you can hold more data in these and use the same card for different games
I saw a gameplay of this game in a old video and never identified it, thank you for this very nice video bro ! 3:40 There's 2 buttons to substitute racing wheels in real life that has 2 N2O bottle, each button for a bottle, like in Fast&Furious early movies.
I actually played this! Was fun to hop into the flashy arcade cabinet to play it in the arcade over in Moscow (I still don't get what was up with Russian arcades getting the rarest arcade cabinets). Wished we had cards for the memory card system because it looks way more fun with the system enabled, would've spent so much time playing through the progression of this game. Great video! Brought me back some memories, wish to see more of this arcade content.
I managed to get this running on my PC along with Mario Kart Arcade GP DX and Batman. All thanks to Teknoparrot.
I remember playing this as a 5yr old and i didn't know it has a progress saving system, i would try to play this again. The game has its own physics and mechanic idk and yes the steering wheels does wobble that much when you press the nitro, tbh this is my true experience of wall riding
Street Racing was the Festival racing of the 2000s
Yoooooooo this is ma jaaaaaaaaaaaaaam. good job with the video brother, its very nice. I finished this game and finished the memory card mode, and had the top time on the shuibuya track, i played this game so much that i knew the arcade staff by first name haha, sadly the arcade's closed now and i no longer can play this game, this video puts a big smile on my face, thank you.
I played this game YEARS ago at a bowling place with an arcade, nice memories
what a great video. never heard of it but definitely gonna try it out on my MAME (fingers crossed) that it’s available). def has big NFSU vibes!!
Found this arcade cabinet in the hotel I was staying @ near Disney world. Spent a few too many dollars during the down time. Thought it was super cool and different from the Tokyo drift cabinet.
Great video!
It's unfortunate I never met a cabinet to play, but once I saw the clips I feel nothing but astonished on how accurate on the street view-especially Hong Kong. The card system sounds similar to Sega Rosso Initial D games, but less frustrating in content.
This game perfectly encapsulates what 6 year old me thought Japan was like.
God damn. I wish they'd done a home port of this. It would have had such a ridiculous amount of relatability with that unlock system.
Can’t forget about this game. It’s awesome.
Very good video.. i didnt know about this one!
played the hell out of it at a local mall back when i was little, seeing this vid just brings back so many fond memories

Same man. Mustang and 300ZX Z32 were my go to cars
I actually played the US release of this game in the Battlefield Mall in Springfield MO. I have pretty fond memories of playing it
I played this game ONCE over at Dave & Busters somewhere in Maryland. I completely forgot about it.
Sega has so many games that need to be released for home consoles. This and Revenge of Death Adder are high on that list
love me some arcade racing games! especially the likes of initial d, daytona and outrun, as well as NFS underground 2 and carbon. I had heard of this one but never got the chance to play it in the arcade. definitely sounds like I missed out, this would have definitely been up my alley!
From what i remember when i play this game. the cabinet has the pin code styled memory save like the raw thrills games
I love how the font of the subtitles is the same font as the Yakuza games from Sega
That Evo with the blower 😂
I still remember this arcade racing
This and Sega Race TV would have been perfect for XBLA
The cars look sick tbh
I've played a ton of Sega Arcade games. This one is new to me. Hope I see one someday
Video is great. I make a nostalgia too and I swear that Sega produces very high quality work.
If you think about it, R-Tuned is just secretly Turbo Outrun 2 using the Outrun 2 engine and with a street racer skin plastered on top of it.
great vid
its at my local arcade. Even tough the seats foot space is small af (im 6 foot tall) and i look like a frog playing it, its amazing
I thought this was made as an early PS2 game. 2008 is crazy.
I haven't played this yet, but seen the gameplay. Looks and seems amazing. I have it on that application as well, need to find the time to play it.
I wish they still made games like this this looks fun
Wish arcades had this instead of yet another San Francisco Rush clone machine in the back lol.
I remember playing this at Gameworks. I was an Initial D main at the time, but I would play this two or three times when I visited.
R-TUNED is pretty sweet. Never came across a cabinet of the game in person, but I’ve also been playing it on Teknoparrot (particularly the IC version so I can unlock everything). It’s one of those games that deserves a lot more attention from not just arcade racing fans, but SEGA themselves. Hope this ends up in the next Yakuza or something. P.S. If you’re up to it, consider doing a video on NAMCO’s Dead Heat. An arcade racer from 2010. That game did something cool which let you challenge the racing data of previous players with each play session, allowing for excellent replay value in an arcade setting.
I can see this being a banger in the arcade, interesting game
This arcade game still exists now in my city. Love to play this game so much. Also i like to drive the supra
I don't know why but I love the aestethics of the game
Man it's 2008... kinda late, back then it was the year after Juiced 2 Hot Import Nights and the year where EA half-a55ed NFS Undercover as if they didn't really want tuner street racing anymore (with the next game being the clean af SHIFT) But doesn't matter, still awesome (though not as ambitiously large as Namco's Maximum Tune) Then again i'm recently on a "Bro wake up it's 2009" binge.
It’s a shame this never saw a console or pc release I really would’ve liked a physical copy instead of flying the Jolly Roger 🏴☠️
Now do a video about that Sega World Drivers Championship game, love teknooarrot.
We need this on console
4 more subs to 1k nice. Do more of these retro gem videos.
Yo i remember playing this with my brother whenever we went to the movies
You're right! Never heard of it! 😊
Never knew this existed until now
Since the 2 videos you made on the 2 games you made are by sega, I'm predicting the next video you're going to make is on the hummer arcade game
I'll admit i never knew this Sega racer existed. Looks fun. And i wouldn't mind Sega release this on current consoles and PC for a sensible price.
I saw this cabinet on a cruise ship, it was pretty neglected as the coin slot was broken and the start button didn’t work
Yu Suzuki's final game at Sega (Was either this or Sega Race TV which released near enough)
How did you miss the fact that some of the characters in this game are from Virtua fighter? I spotted Akira, Goh Brad and Wolf.
Never played this (not sure if we even got it here in the UK), but I did play Dead Heat with some friends at a bowling alley back in 2011. I was already well aware of WMMT back then and Dead Heat was the closest thing I'd seen to it irl, so I fanboyed over it and my friends probably thought this was really strange 😆
*i like when nitro only recharges by going to a shop. That's one of the most realistic things gta sa did.*
If you can. Try looking at the wangan midnight maximum tune (arcade and Japanese port) it’s dope and is more of an updated version of Tokyo extreme racer
Tokyo Xtreme racer was cool on the Dreamcast back in the day.
Your voice is smooth as a mosaic brick, have one❤👍✌
Good to know someone else actually knows R-Tuned exists
Arcades have made a lot of contributions to the market, but one is negative: there is no physics. This is something persistent and consistent to this day in general in this industry.
Finally someone talks about this game I wish this game had a console port Also I agree about the game OST, it's addictive for me
We have that arcade machine in our local mall. But sadly its condition is critical. Both PC systems have issues, the nitrous buttons on both cabinets don't work, and one of the original CRT screens is at its last leg, while the other has an LCD TV screen that's in fitting size. Sadly, obtaining the right parts for it became expensive and hard to get. I really had a nice childhood with that game back then, begging my parents to get more money to play it. Of course, playing on the emulator is still a choice. But it doesn't give that same vibe as the original does.
Great video and great game.
0:05 I think I played it all obviously but you know feelings racing in those games uff... 0:12 and more...
2:58 Soft MC2 bgm
I remember playing this one time... God, I feel dizzy after I played it.
Looking at how much does the card system expand this game, you'd think it would already be qualified for getting a console port. It came out during the time the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii were still taking the industry by storm, too. But, sadly, SEGA just won't do it.
So, does anyone know if it is possible to unlock those boss cars? And if not, I wonder how hard it would be with a Cheat Engine...
This actually looks decent
This is like Maximum tune
looks like faster than speed with a story mode
