Race Driver: GRID had a little-known release as an arcade cabinet. How well does it hold up against the other versions?

As an arcade owner, one of the weirdest features of this game is accessed only via the service menu. There's an option to completely change the tracks used in the game, giving you a totally different experience. I have no idea why this is otherwise inaccessible to customers (and apparently unknown to the reviewer and many who play this game). I liked the alternate track set a little better so I left my machines in that mode.

Also, with that seting you could have two sets of machines. One with the track set shown in the video and the other machine running the alternative set

And gets PTSD-inducing on Grid 2 with the powerslide physics. Though extremely satisfying when nailing the whole run.

We had those scattered across our city in most of the cinemas, they were quite popular for some reason in Moscow. I always was good at racing games and pc grid in particular, so winning all 3 championship races was rather easy for me - this is what made this arcade special, I could play for more than 10 minutes for one coin. I remember searching the net for service manual, thinking there must be some sort of secret, and there was! I dont remember exactly, but if you hold reset, or view button while choosing championship, you had access to alternative tracks. And also there was two sets of tracks which could only be changed on hardware by service specialist, track switch was behind coin operator.

I just saw a comment below about alternative tracks on select view button, but I never knew they depend on the region version. I guess the switch inside arcade is region selector then.

hold the "view change" button whilst pressing start after you insert a coin, and a secret track will be selectable in quick race. Donnington Park for the EU version and Okutama for the US version 😊

Played the hell out of this over the past five years or so since one of my local arcades have it. Obviously the console version has the longevity over this any day but it is pretty fun to play this version simply for how much you can just CHUCK cars into corners. Plus, I love the thumping soundtrack and how you can literally *feel* your seat shaking with the bass during the final lap, especially with the deluxe cabinet. Only problem I would say is that Okutama is kinda too difficult with an even more arcade-y handling style than the original version of Grid, I never pick it because it's just too difficult lmao.

there was one of these arcade machines at my local cinema maybe 10 years ago, I honestly forgot it existed till I saw this video and for some reason I feel like it had a random ass name of it which caught me of guard as I'm a big Grid fan.

Holy sht this is hella underrated for a high-quality video like this. Been a fan of Race Driver GRID for 3 years and knew that it has an arcade version quite recently, glad it looked like what I'd imagine for a GRID Arcade.

ahh man I remember first playing this as an 8 year old got my first end credits at age 9 and I have basically been playing championships until age 18 lol, shooting for leaderboard times I grew to love okutama as it was one of the only tracks to be a real challenge haha, proper sweaty track, was a very long time before I broke out of 3rd place and into 1st there 19 now, don't even live in the same country of that arcade anymore, kinda miss it makes me wonder how my leaderboard times are holding up, or if the machine is still there 🤔

We had that arcade in our workshop in Bandai Namco in UK, us engineers get all kinds of machines there and not only Namco arcades. Game's fun and looks so good for an arcade, a bit of a load of work to get it fixed tho, guys in Sega had their work cut out for this. As for Codemasters developing it, usually the arcade versions arent touched by the main developer at all, for example NFS Heat Takedown arcade.

At first I thought it was a bit onfurtunate to see this video pale in comparison to your new video...until I saw that the Sega Street Racer video which is what had me this recommended on the side, was your first new upload. Glad that one got picked up by the algorithm; hope it does get others to check the rest of your stuff as well as stay for new videos your looking forward to make soon. Definitely interested to see more of your takes in other arcade racing games out there :)

So nostalgic. I remember playing it in my local arcade. It had a broken gas pedal, so it if you push it to the metal in real life it would register only as 80% pushed. I always lost because of that!

ive played this, its got a surprisingly high specs requirement, perhaps about 8gb ram with modern and powerful cpu and gpu alike, controlling this game with a keyboard is a pain, so just get a steering wheel, but it was fun as hell, and they even managed to keep the damage model.
