Seeking Relief at the end of a flight or cancellation will only increase your fear of flying

Many anxious flyers and others don’t realise that they reinforce their fears by the automatic experience of relief when they realise the flight is almost over or if it’s been cancelled.
In this video, I show why this is not just unhelpful, but how it can make you fear worse. And I also explain how to change that behaviour with appropriate “self-talk”. “Mindfulness” does not get a mention!

    I developed a massive fear of flying in 2017 when earlier almost every week I had to fly and it was a normal practice. Your videos have made me feel better. I'm still fearful. But now knly during turbulence. Before i stumbled upon on your video in 2018 I used to get sick 2 days before any flight. My threat responses such as heart sinking, fast heartbeat, dry mouth, palpitation all start. But now it's only during turbulence. Before every flight of mine I make sure I watch your videos particularly the one with the raspberry gelly

    It would not be an exaggeration for me to say that your videos have changed my life. I used to love flying, then I developed a fear of it, and now (having experienced four take offs and landings since discovering your channel) I feel like I am gaining control over how I observe, manage, and react to my fear. Thank you for your videos!

    @@lesposen Business all next week and warm'ish for the Great Lakes of America. Despite your fantastic videos, I still need to resort to a prescription to make it through without anxiety, these days. Adult onset fear of flying!! Haha. Perhaps it's a self realization of mortality/lack of control but all of a sudden in my mid-20s having not flown since I was 18, the fear got to me! Oh well, c'est la vie. Just under 2 hours each way this trip, not too bad. Shame it's a CRJ-200, at 6ft5in, it's gonna be snug! Cheers for all your help, Les.

    @@lesposen You know... Despite having to medicate, I took the minimum and even though we hit a patch of turbulence, I kept repeating your words in my head, "turbulence might be uncomfortable but it's not unsafe". I even took a screenshot from that video when you said it and printed the words underneath, which helped even further. Landing was slightly awkward feeling too, as it was a very small regional jet, you really seemed to noticed the staged engine speed dropping/increasing, altitudes falling and leveling, etc on the approach. But again, because of your videos, they helped immensely. I think your channel should have many more subscribers, sir! Thank you!

    Hi Les! You are reading my mind! Haven’t seen my family in 1.5 years, booked a ticket and the flight was cancelled. Felt relieved, even tho I miss them so much. Had to book a new flight some time later and it was harder than booking the first one.Flying on July 2. Feeling a weird mix of another cancellation fear and a fear of boarding at the same time.

    Hi Gustavo! Just saw your response! It went well, I was imagining the plane to be in a box of jelly (as Les showed in one of his videos), as opposed to just hanging there in the air. And it helped! Flying to the US in three days and then again to Russian in two months. Fingers crossed! How has it been for you?

    Same here - it was a loud THUD feeling and sound as if the plane hit a speed bump on a highway. The passenger next to me screamed and the flight attendant was dramatically trying to call a passenger out of the lavatory to go back to his seat.

    Hello Dr. Posen. Thank you very much for your videos. I am a very fearful flyer. And I have a flight in about a week. So my level of anxiety is higher every day. I am currently working with CBT specialist, and he advised me to get a prescription for some anti anxiety meds. I am wondering should I take them or not before the flight? Is it a way of cheating?

  • @lesposen

    @lesposen

    3 жыл бұрын

    No, it's not cheating, IMHO. Perhaps your specialist realises the imminence of your flight and his or her work with you still has a way to go. So the use of meds to help you on THIS flight perhaps trumps any thoughts it's "cheating". I would have no problems with a patient referred to me by their physician already using meds and continuing to do so during the course of our work and flights together. Some people do come to see their meds use as "safety behaviour" as the CBT work progresses, but one should never just stop their use on a whim or on the advice of someone who doesn't prescribe - it best comes from the original prescriber or the physician who now renews the script. You can still do the flight with the meds AND practise what you've learnt in the CBT work. I know with my patients they will use their meds on the outbound flight with me, then see how they go without it on our return flight. Perhaps ask your CBT specialist if they see you remaining on meds for flying on a regular basis, or if the plan is to see you have the meds with you but practise flying without them - the meds become a contingency plan if you find yourself overwhelmed on a "must travel" flight. Hope this assists,
