Nice reaction! As was mentioned by another commenter, Ivan Mendez, the guitarist, was shocked when he first went to play for Angelina. He called her and asked what she wanted to sing so he could learn it if necessary. She told him she didn't work that way. Just come over and they'd wing it. She would ask if he knew a song, or he would ask if she knew one. If whoever was asked, didn't know the song, they would pull it up on the Internet and learn it on the spot. Then they would record it. In some cases they might do a second take, but most were one and done. He also said that if there was a screw-up, it was almost always his. The hardest thing for him was hust staying focused on his playing and not sitting and listening to her.

What got me was the fact neither one of them knew what songs would be performed until they decided together what they wanted to do. They would sit down and knockout at least three songs per session but only one would be published on KZread. There is a huge catalog of songs that we have not heard by these two.

This is imo her best vocal performance. her vibrato never sounds better. I have never heard sounds as sweet as here. I love this .

She owns every cover she does, and often when you hear Angelina cover a song it's so different from the original it's as if you're hearing the song for the very first time. She also has an amazing ability to bring out the beauty and emotion in a song like no one else. I've listened to this cover by Angelina many hundreds of times, while I listened to the original for about one-third of the song, and have never listened to it again since.

...it's not something, you take, it's given... and she really 's got style. The random experimental way, to choose songs has something ingenious sometimes. The guitar player Ivan Mendez explained in an interview, when been hired for sessions with Angelina by her team, he asked for songs to prepare, but they said, don't know, just come. So he came to their house, the had a good time, the ate, went to studio then, to try few songs and finally do a recording mostly in 1 or two takes. Therefore Angelina often reads lyrics, while singing...

this is my favorite cover she performs. anything she does with Ivan is magic....

I agree completely with you, having listened to both the original and Angelina's. This is among my top 5 favorite AJ covers. Also her cover of Lana Del Rey's Born to Die is pretty spectacular., Her inventiveness puts the Angelina stamp on everything she sings.

Many have mentioned the interview Alan Papier did with the guitarist Ivan Mendez. It is definitely worth the watch. You get some more insight into how special she is. They only worked together for a few months in the spring and summer of 2018. They did a few gigs and got together at her home several times and would practice and record 2 or 3 songs. He would ask for the songs ahead of time so he could learn them but it never happened that way. She would decide the songs she wanted to sing after they hung out for a while. Then he would learn the songs and many times she was reading the lyrics while she sang. Just amazing really. Both of them. Million Years Ago. Adele cover, is their most popular cover together.

The only ones who won't "stay" are the original artists, they pack'n & track'n after hearing her covers.

It's not just this song - Angelina is a pure storyteller.. Via the words as well as the emotion. I can't count the number of covers that Angelina has done where, even after my first listen, I understand the meaning of the song and can hear/remember the words/story for the very first time... no matter how many times I had listened to the original...

Iv'e listened to every video she has several or more times and she still absolutely blows my mind every time she comes out with something new! Jaw dropping! That voice grabs you in the sweetest spot of your soul and transports into the world she is creating. What a beautiful journey! Do her Amy Winehouse covers Back to Black at 10 @xACU Valerie about 12 @k2Ik a personal favorite, Rehab @SevE and I'm no good @6cXU She rewrote the lyrics in several of them! Amazing!

This was amazing to listen to. Ivan Mendez, the guitarist, said they did these sessions in 1 or 2 takes. In the video Angelina appears to be reading the lyrics off to the side. Just incredible what she can do to a song with so little preparation. Like you, I never really cared to listen to the original version. This is one of my favorite songs now.

It was being written for Angie, they just didn't know it then.

I don't think this song can be sung any better unless Angelina sings it again.

One of my very favorites from Angelina. Just a 12 year at home producing a cover that once again outshines the original. Ivan (on guitar) said in a recent interview that sometines they had to do a few takes because he didn't really know the song, but Angelina nails these songs on every take.

I’m going to disagree somewhat with something you said. This song is amazingly beautiful not because a “vocalist” is singing it-it’s because Angelina has brought the lyrics to life with her uniquely beautiful voice. I think, as with many of her songs, she’s killed this for anyone else. And it looks like she’s reading the lyrics off to the side. For another mesmerizing performance similar to this with Ivan on guitar backing her, try A Million Years Ago. On that one, Angelina is covering a real vocalist, Adele. Angelina’s voice, interpretation of lyrics, and emotion make her version the only one you’ll ever want to hear again.

Fun fact: Angelina is now working with producers Stargate - who accidentally also produced several albums for Rihanna and wrote some of her biggest hits, such as "Diamonds" and "Only Girl (in the world)".

And they co-wrote some of the biggest hits for some of these, such as "Fireworks" with Katy Perry, "Irreplaceable" with Beyoncé, "Miss Independent" with Ne-Yo, and "Adventure of a Lifetime" with Coldplay. I particularly love Coldplay's song. An added bonus is that the lads behind Stargate are also Norwegian, so they literally speak the same language as Angelina. Pretty sure her uncle & manager made sure that Stargate understands Angelina's vision.

Thank you for another fine reaction to Angelina. As you continue your journey of discovery, you will come to the realisation that Angelina doesn't "cover" songs in the normal meaning of the phrase. She reads and listens to the song and then rearranges the whole. Her musicality is such that she instinctively recognises how the lyrics and melody should be sung to truly reflect the emotions contained within them.

I love it when she makes you give a big smile! While you’re listening to these, you have to realize that there’s a microphone and a guitar-that’s it! No studio, no mixer, no auto tune, etc., etc., etc. This is also usually after one or two run throughs-that’s why she’s often reading the lyrics at the same time and still putting all this emotion into the words. To quote most of the reactors-WOW!

No need of fancy clothes, glittering stageshows and autotune in the postproduction. Just raw talent and the indescribable capability to waken your heart and soul to the wonders of music.

What you are eluding to that the song needed a vocalist is why Angelina is a songwriters dream, she can make anyone’s song a hit!

Everything you said was right on. No comparison between this and the original. For her 12 birthday she received this wonderful Neumann microphone; very expensive. In April and early May she and Ivan recorded three songs that are among my all time favorite Angelina performances. And "Stay" is one of them. Until she released "All I Ask", this was my favorite performance. So you can see that all three of these were done in the same setting with only an acoustic guitar (Ivan Mendes) and this fabulous microphone. When she posted these three performances less than a month apart, I was just stunned that a 12 year old girl could produce something this Incredibly Fantastic. I still marvel at how Wonderful an artist she is. There's two more performances with this mike that are in the same league as these three, but done with backing tracks. Angelina has never NEVER given me chills but she does draw me in and she makes me hear things in a peice of music I've never heard before. Every cover she does is a new insight into the music; what it says the story it tells. She opens a whole new world in each song and each time I listen to a particular song I hear something different somerthing new again. I think the most amazing thing about Angelina is that when she sings a song she steps back and lets the music and the lyrics speak for them selves through her. Angelina is the servent to the music and not the other way around. Angelina is the only singer I have ever seen do this. This is how she percieves the work of Billy Holiday who is Angelina's greatest influence of whom she said sings with unconditional love, Love always puts others first and its self in the service of all other things even music. When I hear Angelina sing I listen and learn and enjoy.

There is something so moving about some of the lines in her rendition. The guitarist said that he would just come over and he would hang out with her and her family all day, and then in the evening, she'd say, "Do you know such and such?" And they'd sort of learn it, work it out. She's 11 or 12. Crazy. How about doing her version of Lana Del Rey's Born to Die or Young and Beautiful?

Well, Angelina has definitely covered good vocalists. One of my favs is A Million Years ago, by Adele. That will give you a pretty good idea of the emotional depth this child prodigy can illicit.

I agree, she was one of the early Reactors who discovered Angelina and immediately started featuring her performances regularly on her channel. If you go to the Community section of her channel, you will be able to read why she has not posted any videos for some time.

Thoughts about this video: 1) Like so many of her other covers, it was filmed in a single take. 2) According to the guitarist (Ivan Mendez), this was probably the first (and only) take. 3) Since this was a first take with no rehearsal, you can see she's reading the lyrics off-camera to her left (and scrolling in the middle of the video). 4) Oh yeah: don't forget that she's a 7th-grader here, singing in a second language. It's truly jaw-dropping, when you stop to think about it.

Sounds like she's been performing this song for years. Her jazz roots had Ivan following her lead; changes in tempo, holding some words, etc. She is arranging on the fly. A true prodigy.

The guitarist, Ivan Mendez, told in a interview that on these songs he's playing for her, he often just got a short time to learn the song to know, and was told just to follow Angelina (Egil, the norwegian guitarist, told almost the same story. She was younger than, and at that time it was learning/building up and having fun) These songs would be songs she heard and liked a lot, and it was often just one take, and she would read the lyrics to.

Having never heard the original version...to me "this" is the original. Can't imagine it sung any other way.

She don't know the lyrics, so she is reading them while she is singing. She was 12 years old and sings in another language than her own. Amazing. How? She is musically a pure genius that girl.

The guitarist Ivan Mendez said they usually decided what song to record about half an hour before recording it. I didn’t look for it but in a lot of there videos you can see her checking the words. A lot of these changes you are talking about, she’ll be just riffing them as she goes.

Her jazz roots and unlimited ability going from high to low registers, with such ease, are what allows her to inflect such a passionate feeling that non-jazz 'rooted' singers just aren't able to duplicate. The only other singer I have ever heard to emit in such ways was Amy Winehouse. You will note that only Angelina, out of all the A - List singers out there, will cover an Amy ballad, for all these others know it would be an attempt in futility to try. Angelina has been absorbing bits and pieces of the jazz greats from yesteryear and the most uniquely different one from all of them was Amy.
