Ivan Mendez her Guitar player here in the States, In an interview said. He would go to practice with him and she woul;d sudden;ly say lets record this song. He said most of the time he had never played the song before and Angelina would say "that is ok just follow me."

That second to last “stay” is one of her most sublime moments

"She makes mature vocal choices" is right on target- her interpretation is so amazing for a 12 year old girl. When she does these performances, she usually do these in ONE take! She is music personified.

Angelina Jordan, one of God's greatest gifts to the world of music. She has been bestowed with talent that spans the past and present history of vocalist ,again I am struggling to find words that befit her abilities. 12 years old should not be this good, A.J. one of the wonders of the world. Blessed to be here to experience such a person as she is.

This was my Angelina's best cover of all time until recently. By the way, how she sounds some words are not because of her accent. I believe it's her artistic choice. And how beautiful they can be sometimes.

I feel like you're getting cheated without headphones, with a good set its so like heaven.

Her "brilliance" is staged with just a 🎤 and guitar accompaniment. Her brilliance is reading the lyrics and applies the required emotion at the same time..She has a vast grasp of using her vocal elements at just the right time, a little lilt to a note, a riff only where it adds the color she chooses... Yes, you chose the word BRILLIANT to describe her interpretation.. and this is a 12 yr old who has yet to live the lyrics.. this is GENIUS=she sings in a manner that makes you participate in the emotion; she draws you in and takes you on her journey through the lyrics.. riding her voice in awe... That's her brilliance ... Her artistry is what you expect and hear everytime.. yet, she still surprises you... By then she had relatively long arms and fingers (typical for slim girls at that age) that made those moves even more graceful! Lovely to watch! The runs in the last 3 "Stays" are mesmerizing!

Angelina makes covers hers with pauses, mini arpeggios and a natural gravel in her voice. Love them and her.

Believe me, you can trust us Angels who've been Angels for a while, when we say that, with Angelina, it's always been about mature choices, even from the age of eight. You can hear the stylistic choices in her Norway's Got Talent renditions of "Bang, Bang" and "Summertime" (age 8). She's been doing her own arrangements (on paper and vocally) since that age. It's absolutely uncanny and non-explainable! Angelina leaves no stone unturned and trusts nothing to mere happenstance.

Rihanna had a massive hit with this song, that undoubtedly required numerous 'takes', along with a professional orchestra and studio. Angelina, in this 'at home' rendition is a last minute decision that she decides to do with her friend Ivan keeping time with his guitar. Because Angelina isn't totally familiar with the lyrics, you will see her glancing at a tablet sitting beside her. Keep in mind that while doing this, she also instantaneously arranges the song in her own jazzy style. Rhianna is great but there's no way a non-jazz singer can match the emotion laden penetration that a true jazz specialist like Angelina is able to do.

Her singing this song just makes me swell with emotion. Very unusual for me.

SHE PLAYS WITH WORDS AND NOTES

Ivan on the guitar in an interview said Angelina would ring him up and say come over to do some videos and Ivan would say he didn't know half the songs and Angelina would say we'll sort that out when you get here. Ivan said he would learn the song and they would do one or two takes then post it, hey you can't help but to love her she is great, thanks Britt for putting this video, best wishes from Australia.

No production, reading the lyrics as she goes. one time through sitting on a chair working with the guitarist in her room could go straight to the airways. Makes the song sound a bit more risqué than the original, very physical, very seductive. LOVE how you get the emotion Angelina is TRANSMITTING. .

Yes, environment and practice are non-issue for Angelina. Can you imagine what it takes to put her version into her head? Sounds a bit like what is purported to be Mozart's modus operandi, that is, everything automatically got assembled iñ his Head. No corrections needed.

What is most amazing is that in interviews with her 2 guitarists- one take for most and likely one of them never heard off the song. That is why she’s often reading the lyrics. Guitarist follows her lead and its magic

It's amazing to hear a 12 year old girl put so much emotion into her vocals. She actually has a few incredible covers with the same guitarist at this age, Adele's Milion Years Ago and Elvis's Always on My Mind. Both are well worth listening to. And you might want to check the sound as I'm sure there is a problem on your end that I haven't noticed in your previous videos.

Good point Mark S, I am not sure how some reviewers are broadcasting the sound as it seems to be through the mic of there system which it loses most of the richness of the recording and I cannot listen to for more then a few seconds . All others I listen to have the sound direct from the video. I hate to see a reviewer miss out of views because of this as I like her reactions. I am not sure as I do not post videos what the issue is or maybe they do not know it was broadcasted this way and is quite noticeable and I will not watch.

Every note, every word she sings is all her stylistic choice done intentionally. When she speaks English it’s flawless. She was singing maturely as a toddler. She’s a true child prodigy.

This is another of my favorites from her. The delicate vocal shaping is so smooth. Yes, I also think her accent, more noticeable in song than speech, adds to the coloring of the song. Vocally, delicate as a butterfly but magical and stunning. Several of these home music corner off the cuff selections are remarkable. Very good reaction. Edit: You guys are probably right about no accent. She may be purposely forming the words for effect. I think we can all agree we do love it.

I suppose it makes sense, in a way, to listen without headphones or earbuds. That way, when you do decide to use them, you can listen to the other half of the sounds you missed the first time and everything will sound like something new.

Something that I noticed about her speaking voice when she was on AGT was that her speaking voice was a little nasal, which is not as noticable as she gets older. However, her singing voice is whatever she wants or needs it to be for the best vocal effect. She is the most amazing prodigy that I have ever experienced. What is so unique is that she is so well documented from very young to now. Kudos the her family for this and their foresight to provide the world with Angelina's development as a true artist.

When she was born the doctor spanked her bottom she started singing. I love her deep smokey voice. Another amazing deep voice you should check out is "haley reinhart " her cover "creep" with post modern jukebox. She's up their with morissette an Angelina .I met her father in the 80s he was on our circuit with band Traffic Jam. A amazing guitarist.

I followed Haley since American Idol in 2011. I didn't think there was an artist out there as good until I found Angelina. Both have jazz roots. Can't go wrong with either one. Haley's "Creep" is ridiculously good! Haley with her dad on guitar at Chess Records in Chicago performing "Can't Find My Way Home" and Haley's original "Don't Know How To Love You" 2 years ago. It's not her accent; she doesn't have one. She makes choices that are related to her jazz and blues approach. That affects her phrasing and pronounciation of some words. If you were in a conversation with Angelina, you would think she was a native of the USA. NO accent! For me, this performance is far better than the original. One of her very best.

The guitarist is Ivan Mendez. He has an interview where he discusses her process. He says there was often a spontaneous decision as to what song they would try. They would go over it a couple of times to work out the accompianment and lyrics. Thats why some songs she is glancing to the side to check lyrics. Then they switch the camera on. They are not a resultbof constant rehearsal. They were largely spontaneous.. personally I found that information more shocking. Shevis that young and that good .....intinctively.

Ivan Mendez Watch as Ivan Mendez, Angelina's LA guitarist reacts to her voice, he is blown away by her storytelling vocals, and was working with her very often. This is a classic example of the fact that no matter how many times one has experienced AJ performances she has the ability to hypnotize you with those storytelling vocals.

she was late 12, or early 13 at this point, just genius! She does not have to go super powerful; she gives you just enough to make you love it.

I think by the point of this performance Angelina's vocal and artistic choices are almost always intentional and mature. When she was younger occasionally her English pronunciation or relatively small vocal instrument would betray her from reaching her desired excellence but that is increasingly rare.

Regardless of which version you prefer - Rihanna's or Angelina's - the fact that they are even "comparable" (IYKWIM) is remarkable, given that she's 12 here, recording herself at home (in a room that hasn't been set up in any special way for sound recording), with no edits and only minimal processing (the added reverb), in what is likely the first and only take (per an interview with the guitarist, Ivan Mendez, which can be found on Alan Papier's channel). That's just crazy… I mean… par for the course for Angelina, yes… but still remarkable. Her covers saw a *huge* leap in suond quality shortly after she got that mic (a Neumann TLM 102). At least as important as the mic itself was how her vocal was recorded (directly through the "line", rather than through a speaker and then into the camera's microphone, which is how she was doing it before) and how it was processed (again, the added reverb). I wonder whether Ivan helped her with that stuff, as well as accompanying her. He had been making his own YT covers for a while at the point when they started working together (see his channel, Ivan Lives) . For her cover of "Valerie" (also on her CoverChannel - and highly recommended, BTW), Ivan created the music track based on Mark Ronson's version of the song (for which Amy Winehouse was the featured vocalist). I don't know if Ivan also edited the video (I don't think he said that in the interview, but he definitely had experience doing that kind of thing for his own covers). Anyway, my point is, I suspect that he might have helped her more than simply being an instrumentalist. Someday we'll know more about that, I'm sure.

Great reaction again, but the sound on the video you are watching seems a bit distorted compared to when I have heard it before (many times)....as though it's accentuating the high frequencies a bit much ? It sounds echoey - when listening before it sounded much smoother and softer. And it makes Ivan's guitar playing seem a bit (relatively) loud... not sure if you are hearing it this way too ?

You have a low-tech solution going I think, which is fine! You might want to make a bit more fancy at some point: the sound now comes from your device into the mic and it loses quality, and, perhaps more important, if you use a headphone you get to hear all the delicious richness and all the little details much better :-) Just something for you to consider. You said sassy and it is also jazzy how she sings it :-) From an emotional point of view, I feel a lot melancholy in her interpretation. Where with Rihanna, you sort of know that everything will work out and the other is going to stay. With Angelina’s melancholy, she is asking the other to stay but she already knows it is not going to happen. Just with her tone of voice, she is telling a different story. These sessions were largely improvised. Ivan Mendez, the guitarist, would come to her house and hang out with her and her family during the day. In the evening Angelina and Ivan would quickly settle on a song and record. You see her glance to the side where supposedly the lyrics are. It would be a one take recording, unless per his own words, Ivan would mess up.
