If you are a victim of domestic abuse, please reach out to someone for help. Please call the national domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. That’s 1-800-799-7233 or go to thehotline.org to chat with someone online. The great thing about this website is that, at any time, hitting the escape key twice will instantly take your browser to a google search page. In the event the abuser is nearby, you can ensure that you don’t get caught trying to get help.
If you are having feelings of harming yourself or someone else or even just need someone to talk to, please contact your local mental health facility, call 911 or call Mental Health America who operate the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. That’s 1-800-273-8255. They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Having an abusive Asian mom, I liked juvenile detention (arrested for trespassing to get away from a beating) for the freedom and the macaroni and cheese. I'm not proud of it but loved that my mom was not around at the detention center. I wanted to harm my mom but didn't want to spend the rest of my life in prison. Thank goodness for that stop sign.

When your child is 22 you tell them what the rules are for them living with you. I think no smoking in the house, no coming home so drunk that you wake everyone in the house up are reasonable rules. Taking the phone from a grown adult, grounding them and dictating what they can do is unacceptable and absurd. Basically they thought the owned her. Totally not excusing her for what she did

Okay, we only have Jennifer Pan's word for what her parents supposedly did. It's very easy to demonize the dead. Of course, she also lied to her boyfriend about being raped and pregnant. And to the interviewing detective about receiving threats. And to police about being tied up during the murder. And to police about nearly everything related to the crime. This girl will lie whenever it's convenient.

My house my rules. If my rule is stand on your head and cluck like a chicken every time you enter the house, if you want to live in my house you will do it or get out. As OP pointed out, she's an adult. With a job. Perfectly capable of getting her own place. "Don't come home so drunk...." My a$$. If your gonna get drunk you better plan to stay at your friends house. That's not tiger parenting, that's setting boundaries. I would also note that if I am paying for your phone, I'll take it away whenever I please. Once again, she's an adult with a job and can get her own phone. I swear half these responses have to be from kids or people who don't have kids.

@@ammiller3911 Exactly! We've got a really popular proverb in Germany (popular among parents, that is) which goes "as long as you put your feet under my table..." followed by whatever the particulars are for that respective person. I moved out with 19 since my boyfriend (of 4 years) wasn't allowed to sleep over and I still had to ask for permission to go out on school nights (Germany, 13 years of schooling). Again, their house, their rules - easy decision. Stay and do what they want or move out and take charge of your own life.

As an asian/pacific islander I can relate to this so much, most asian families are so toxic, it’s not just parents too even uncles, aunts, and grandparents, especially if y’all live in the same roof, they inflict do much trauma and cause tons of mental health issues (most don’t believe in mental health, atleast from my family) and would never acknowledge it. Sad that she had to resort to this but they really fucked with her head. I hope she heals and finds peace in her life.

Unfortunately in my experience, strict parents never lighten up. I'm 34 years old and had to move back home when the pandemic started. I have a curfew, my parents blow my phone up if I take longer than what they think I should, am made to keep my location on, and I have to ask their permission before I leave for anywhere. I put up with it because I would be screwed without their help right now. But I can also tell you it's a huge point of contention between us and it's ruining our relationship. However, with all of that said, her parents didn't deserve any of what she did to them.

I'm the daughter of an Asian mother (with traditional and 'tiger parent' values), and a Caucasian father (who is so chill and would be happy no matter what level of success I reach, as long as I am happy). Obviously their marriage was doomed but they stayed together, with me being an only child torn between two polar opposite role models. My tiger mum was unsurprisingly far more vocal, pushy, demanding etc. I also lied about my academic achievements and forged my school reports to make them better (even though I was excelling already as one of the top students, I knew it wasn't good enough). She never picked up on my embellishments because my teachers legitimately had nothing but praise, and I brought home real awards every year. All along, I'd also developed deep depression, crippling anxiety, and anorexia. I started a medical degree and quit attending classes maybe a month in due to my depression, suicidality, and eating disorder worsening... but couldn't face telling my mum, so I kept going to campus and acted like I was still studying. I did that for a whole year until it came crashing down and she found out. She showed nothing but rage.. even accusing me of 'teaching myself' how to be mentally ill etc. It was like she didn't see the damage she was doing to me.. I was literally wasting away, skin on bones, but all she did was use it as more fuel to criticise me.. calling me 'disgusting' for my weight. I'm in my 30s now. Still battling the same issues, still have my mother in my life, still having her constantly criticise everything I do... from the way I walk, the way I talk, the way I look, the things I like, the friends I have, the partners I've had, etc etc etc. I don't feel pity for Jennifer despite knowing how it feels to be under constant pressure and criticism and unrealistic expectations.. but I do think there's something so sickeningly toxic about parents with those sorts of values. It's amazing how cold they can be to their own children... yet oblivious to their cruelty, believing they're only doing what is best for them (and being better than every other parent too).

@@jothriny The timing of your reply couldn't be better. I read it this morning and pondered it, and still thought I couldn't do it to her.. it would crush her, be cruel, be selfish, etc if I did that to her. Then she visited like she does most Saturdays. My most dreaded day every week.. but tonight it was one of the worst and I realised there's no saving this relationship no matter how hard I try to change, and it's doing neither of us any good. So when she stormed out and slammed the door (because I tried explaining why I might do the things she accuses me of, without realising, like talking too loudly, and she does this thing where she says I talk really aggressively in a staccato kind of way, then mimicks it in a very dramatised way... maybe I do talk like that? Maybe I'm being gaslighted? I've asked friends, psychs, even recorded conversations to listen to how I talk and I don't hear it so.. anyway). Here I am, re-reading your comment, and I'm doing it. Blocked her on everything. Told her as she was leaving that if I'm that awful and anger/frustrate you that much, you can cut me out of your life and be happy. But I've told her that countless times over the years and she obviously chooses to insert herself into my life when I'm 36 and live independently. So I'll take the step for her, and myself. I hate the thought of this... especially because my dad passed away in 2022 and its still raw, and I have no siblings or other relatives. But thank you for the comment and giving me the courage. I'm so sorry you suffered and had to make that choice, but I'm glad you're healing and are looking after yourself. Thank you again (and the previous replies I didn't get to).

Because they were never raised to be on their own, the abusive parents use this method to keep the child with them forever (preferably take care of the parent when they get old as well). This case blows my mind. Her actions and decisions on how to get out from under her parents control are abhorrent and despicable I really wish she had the courage to walk away from her family - at least until she became more confident and stable as an adult. I absolutely think this type of parenting is abusive and beyond controlling. It’s not a parents job to turn their children into whatever they believe they should be.

  • @yeshuasage3724

Absolutely flabbergasted too. Many many of us who come from conservative backgrounds have really domineering and controlling parents and even down right abusive parents (especially dads) to the point where we feel we are drowning, then we simply rebel and go through a reckless phase, then when we grow up and calm down, we and our parents make up and make amends and explain to our parents what they did wrong. I just cannot fathom what would drive someone to put a hit on their parents unless they sexually abused them or something which almost never happens. Jennifer’s upbringing was nothing out of the ordinary…..

It didn’t sound like she was “smart” enough or disciplined enough or flat out she didn’t want it but her grades weren’t even good enough. And that’s ok we aren’t all Smart enough to be pharmacists or whatever lofty dream job her parents had. Thank god my parents didn’t go that far. They were strict and still tried to be even after my divorce and 2 kids (yes can you believe it) but I was able to tell them to knock it off or you don’t get to have us in your life. Guess what? They stfu

This case has some of the most classic Columbo-style detective work. I really think that they made the final decision about her potential involvement & to pursue questioning her as a suspect based on one pivotal thing... the safe. There's a big safe in her parent's bedroom. She doesn't mention it in her story; the detective has to ask about it. The intruders didn't even try getting into it. Why? There was no money in the safe. But they wouldn't have known that it wasn't worth their while... unless Jennifer had told them. If they were actual robbers, they would have at least tried to get it open, or demanded the combination from her family while asking where their wallets were. It would've, at the very least, featured in her story. She honestly just didn't think it through logically, and towards the end of her interrogation it's a huge (but subtle) tipping point where she realizes her story is completely crumbling as the detective confirms that she had knowledge that the safe was empty of valuables.
