Searching for red grouse on Yorkshire's majestic moors

In this video I head off to the Yorkshire Dales where I embark upon photographing the red grouse, on Ilkley Moor.
With an early start getting up at 3:30 AM or an hour and a half's drive my aim was to be there in plenty of time before sunrise, the forecast was meant to be good with some clear skies however as the morning progressed and the sun rose, there was a thick Bank of cloud on the horizon in the east therefore preventing a good sunrise which I was hoping for to illuminate the red grouse on the Stonewall of the Moor.
Still, all was not lost I had a full day ahead of me and my aim of getting one particular photo of a nice male grouse with his head coming out of the purple Heather was my aim.
As the morning progressed the midges came out in their thousands and descended upon anything that stopped, making it at times hardly bearable to stop and take pictures of the grouse I did have a mosquito net to put over my head but this is only good enough for when you stop for longer periods as it is quite hard to see out of.
Anyway I eventually got the shot after hours of trying and miles of walking one particular male grouse obliged Ann stuck his head out of the purple Heather and posed for a few seconds for me to get the image that I had been longing for since first coming up here in April.
A fantastic day-out job done despite being bitten to death by the midges.

A great video with some lovely keeper shots.! A hat off to you for your perseverance despite the midges, Here in Canada, we have mosquitos, black flies, midges and deer flies that torment us, and our subjects, so I can really relate and appreciate your dedication.

Cheers Stephen, glad you liked it, yeh these little flies that feed the birds but bite the hell out of us are a right pain, but serve a purpose, lol I remember when I was in Alaska and the noseeums were horrendous. ,😵‍💫

You set yourself a tough assignment there, Ash. And those midges didn't help you one bit eh! Totally agree with you about there being something special about dawn and dusk, magical times of the day! Fantastic video, and you pulled off some fantastic results, the shot of the day (for me) was the one in the dew covered grass. Thanks for the videos, Ash. Wish I had the health to get out there like this too. 👏👏

Great video thanks. I live in Ilkley and had no idea how difficult grouse are to photograph. You see them darting about all over the moors, but obviously getting them to come out in the open and sit still needs patience. Plenty of wildlife around the area - otters, kingfishers, curlew, dippers, egret and as you mentioned an abundance of red kites. Thanks for sharing!

Yeh i had a little drive around there looks to be plenty of good locations around this area, for wildlife, one chap i met told me of some short-eared owls that had nested just down the road.

Try Avon skin so soft dry oil for the midges, it helps and better than Deet.
