Searching for Historic Cabins - Death Valley Overland Adventure

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this second leg of our Death Valley National Park overland adventure, we find ourselves in search of some abandoned cabins and mines in the mountains and in the low desert. We'll put our Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators to the test on the Lippencott road, pass by Tea Kettle Junction, stop at the Race Track, encountered a few challenges along the way and eat some great food at camp. #deathvalley #overlanding #adventure

    Same here. I don't think I've ever seen Brad while he was that excited before, when he came running up to get the camera after the flyby. When I saw him being so hype, I got a piloerectic effect going down my back as well, from my mirror neurons going off. Just from seeing Brad being so excited himself. Though I am just sitting here watching a video, being out int he middle of nowhere with his good friends and capturing it on his camera no doubt crated a MUCH bigger dopamine cascade dump for him, than it would any of us who are merely watching it. I thought it was badass. Excited Brad might be Best Brad.

    We do a simple Carne Asada for camping. 1/3 cup olive oil. Juice of 3 squeezed limes, 2 oranges. A tablespoon of Cumin, a tablespoon chile powder, three minced cloves of garlic and a handfuil of finely chopped Cilantro. A lb of thin, flank steak seasoned with salt, pepper . Throw the steak in with the rest as a marinade in a big ziplock bag. Throw it on the grill for a couple of minutes and you have Carne Asada tacos! You can pre make this and throw it in your camping fridge. The longer it marinates, the better it gets.

    My professor Dick Norris and his brother were actually the first people to discover how the rocks move because they stayed there for days there trying to observe them. It turns out whenever there is a thin layer of water on the lake bed, it can freeze beneath the rocks. The high winds then push the rocks over the icy lakebed for quite a distance

  • @uweschroeder

    @uweschroeder

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yep, read the article about the physics and specific weather patterns required to move those rocks just before heading in. Had to stop and tow an idiot out who thought that a Prius is the ideal vehicle to pass by a "High clearance required, 4x4 recommended" sign. Normally I wouldn't have, they were only like 1.5 miles in, but it was a hot day in early summer (around 100) and I figured those people will start walking around the desert without water in search of help and that's no good. Can't have people dying because of stupidity. Well, got them to the crater and headed back in again. Had a nice lunch right there watching the rocks - they didn't move though :-)

    @@uweschroeder -- Well, that's how nature culls the stupid, LOL... Still, it was probably a good idea to help them out. If I remember right, didn't some German tourists die in Death Valley after getting stuck in a mini van?

  • @uweschroeder

    @uweschroeder

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ironcladranchandforge7292 Yes. Family of 4 IIRC. They got pretty far in their minivan. Was a bit more north. They drove up to some of the cabins and pretty much made it there despite flat tires. Then they started walking - in the right direction but they assumed that an "airforce training area" which the map shows is actually something with people where in Death Valley it's not. Still, they ran out of water long before they got anywhere near being found. They might have survived if they had stayed at the cabin they passed - someone would have come by sooner or later. The rangers are pretty good at patrolling in Death Valley. Typical mistake Germans or Europeans in general make about the US: they're not used to everything being so big and far apart. Germany with its 90 million people is only about 3/4 the size of California, so finding help is pretty much something you can walk in an hour.

    Not trying to steal your professors thunder but me and my friends figured it out in grade school lol. Did my science fair project on it and failed ironically. I guess blowing rocks around a muddy frozen cookie sheet with a fan wasn’t scientific enough. As a kid we loved to race our dirt bikes across the lake beds. After a big rain the top crust of the lake bed turns into and amazing lubricant and makes sort of a waterproof barrier for the ground below it. The mud was only a few inches deep and the crust prevented it from becoming a mud bog. We would come off the desert and hit the lakes at full throttle basically hydroplaning across the thin layer of water on the surface. The back end would start to break loose, swapping from side to side. You could do amazing drifts until you pushed it too far which is where the fun part came in (accidentally discovered of course). Once you pushed it too far the back end would break loose and the bike would slide out from underneath you like a spinning top. The bike would slide across the lake bed followed by a kid on his back laughing hysterically across the worlds largest slip and slide. The faster you went the further you would go. The key was committing to the drifts and laying it down in a controlled over-drift. Hours of fun on that old air cooled KX 60. We would come home a jubilant muddy mess and probably nearly hypothermic. I remembered a teacher showing us pictures of the mystery rocks and it clicked to me how they moved. Anyone who lives in this area has experienced the insane winds at times.

    That flyover was nuts! At that altitude, it had to rattle your bolts loose... the ones in your head at least. Here in Somerset County, NJ we were fortunate enough to get flyovers all the time, due to responding to civilian pilots unknowingly entering restricted airspace, when our former President used to visit a certain golf course. Nothing gets more exciting for us folks who only know what's life like on the ground.

    I saw the old painted on sigh that said "thieves will be prosecuted". It mad me think of a sign I saw on my dad's brother's property when I was a kid. He had over 500 acres of land, some of it separated by old country dirt roads, and I would see yellow signs with black writing on it that said, "survivors will be prosecuted" lol. He was a quiet man and not mean at all. I learned to ride a horse named Shorty on his ranch when I was 11. I always love it when we came down from Nebraska to Oklahoma to visit him. I saw him make his own milk, and he had so many creeks and ponds, and riding a Shorty made it like an adventure. I never went too far, but it was so much fun!

It's Sunday morning for me today and this set of videos from TrailRecon are absolutely enjoyable. I have recently retired, have some obligations to close out, but then I can see myself hitting the road for plenty of sight seeing, scenery soaking and just not being in such a hurry all the time! My sincere compliments to all those involved with TrailRecon and producing this set of videos. I'd assume that was an F15 from Nellis. Maybe a 16. I work on them both!!

    Reminds me of my AF days of working up on the Nellis range and all of the action up there. I sure do miss those sights/sounds!

    Star Wars canyon! So cool when the jets are flying. I was airing down off of Panamint Valley rd and had an F18 fly about 30' over the top of my truck. Actually made it bounce up and down on the ground! How can you not just start jumping up and down and running around in circles when something like that happens!!!!

    The Navy shut down flights through Star War canyon when that pilot crashed and died. Made 12 trips into DV last year, never saw any military aircraft flying low elsewhere in the park. Hanging out in around Beatty I saw plenty hugging low to the ground, that was cool to hear and see.

    Cool area with lots of history. Rode into Panamint Springs about 2pm years ago on a dirt bike, had lunch, then left about 3:30 and rode up past Cerro Gordo and past the salt tram then down to Lone Pine for the night at about 8pm, in early May.

    Another great video...we are heading for the east side of DV in two weeks. As for ice cream, I now have two fridge freezers. I won’t say ice cream on the beach spin Baja was a prime motivator....but, if you love ice cream.....plus ice cold adult beverages.....well, can’t see myself going camping without an electric fridge ever!

    I love watching the videos makes me very envious in the late 80s early 90s I was stationed at Fort Irwin and I wish I would’ve had a jeep back then. I moved to Florida from New England and I’m not a real big mud fan but that’s OK I still love my jeep!

    8:53 OMG, There's our guest book entry. My wife and I were visiting on my 50th birthday. If you take the trail behind the cabin and walk up the mountain, you'll have the entire Racetrack Playa at it's full glory. Thank you for the memory, Macro.
