There's more comic greats in the history Of British humour than ALL of English speaking world put together. Ricky Gervais, Billy Connelly, Dave Allan, Sean Lock, Michael McIntyre, Monty Python, Marty Feldman the Goodies, the list goes on and on. Who is there in America well, the spectacularly funny Joan Rivers, Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle that's about it. Not many Americans make me laugh. Sense of humour too British I guess. Even though I live in Australia now , apart from Barry Humphries I can't think of any one who makes me laugh. Except the real outback, laconic humour of the real Aussies. The professionals are all unfunny duds.
How to explain to 6 year old: You know how the sun gives off energy that makes things hot? Big things (like the sun) also give of energy that makes things heavy! And the more bigger and solid they are the heavier they make things. And the cool thing is, the heavy things pull the lighter things towards them.... Likewise, Big Suzie down the road will eventually pull all the blokes on the street. Science.

Why people don't understand this is comedy and he's joking. He isn't ignorant, he mocks ignorance. But even if he doesn't believe in evolution isn't that his right? Everybody applauds a comedian who is irreligious and ridicules religion (and let's face it mainly Christianity) but when someone questions science all those science-zealots transform to Richard Dawkins in an attempt to "protect rationalism and scientific facts". Even Christians like myself believe in evolution but I will defend someone's right to not believe in it. This is what a grown-up does. And finally science is never absolute. Science progresses and dogmatism is the opposite of science. Last message to science-bigots: When you repeat the same mistakes as those you criticize, you're aren't the same thing as them you're worse. For you knew of the mistake and yet you decided to repeat it. Note: I'm 100% certain all the science-bigots and Dawkins clones will relentlessly attack my comment so don't think you caught me off guard.

Nice, and I personally find evolution to not stack up, but I can respect a person who uses their brain to understand things. In complete fairness, there are idiots on both sides of the fence who don't take the effort to be self-aware and consistent. It just happens that one side of a debate will have a stronger following at any one point in time. It's a human problem. One that I despise but acknowledge that I myself and all others are not wholly immune to either, even if we somewhat mitigate it.

@@zoranbeader6441 Evolutionary theory is constantly improving... Because science. It makes more sense than any other proposition by a long shot, including accurately predicting discoveries that were made in the future. Comedy typically is rooted in an actual opinion and the comedian uses humor to elaborate, criticize, or satirize the subject.
@zoranbeader6441
Жыл бұрын
@@CaptPeon Sure but the theory never stated that evolution is without flaws. Evolution is not survival of the fittest or the road to perfection. Most of evolution is flaws, that's why species keep dying out and other species take their place. Until they die out too! For every evolutionary success story, there are countless billions of flawed designs that didn't survive. And every evolutionary success story will evetually become a flawed design overtaken by a species better adapted to current time and space. Bananas are not perfectly shaped for their enviroment, they just happened to survive whereas their round shaped cousins didn't.
@CaptPeon
Жыл бұрын
@@zoranbeader6441 while I agree that "perfection" is never achieved by evolution, it very much is 'survival of the fittest.' Fitness is literally a relative metric of a population's adaptedness to a habitat and climate. Fitness / evolution only necessitate 'fit enough to reproduce'. I don't agree with your use of "flaws" because the habitat and climate are constantly changing. A trait that is not well adapted here and now may very well be a favorable trait under different conditions.
@zoranbeader6441
Жыл бұрын
@@CaptPeon Survival of the fittest is how one might describe natural selection. Though I think the phrase is missleading and oversimplifies a very complicated process. I doubt I am more fit for survival than everyone who has died of covid, I just happened to catch a milder version and at a time when my immune system happened to be working at full capacity. A month earlier or a month later and I could have easily ended up dead, even though my DNA would have been exactly the same. As for flaws, negative traits are just as much the product of evolution as positive ones. Developing thicker fur in a warming climate is definitely an evolutionary flaw.
he says we are not descended from a-h monkeys and then compares their behaviour to Saville. last I heard he was a very flawed human something but still human. not Attenborough material.

Sean Lock's "comedy" seems entirely based on anti-intellectualism and a celebration of ignorance. Once, in an episode of QI, particle physicist Dr. Brian Cox was just about to say something no doubt very interesting, but Sean threw a fit like a fucking toddler because he wasn't the center of attention and someone actually knowledgeable was speaking.
@SecularIranian
Жыл бұрын
I'd say it's more a parody of anti-intellectualism if anything, and that's what makes it brilliant. In this bit for instance he isn't really satirising scientists; he is mocking his own (feigned) ignorance and vanity.
@brettjohnson536
Жыл бұрын
He's not celebrating anti-intellectualism, he's satirising it. He's mocking the dumb arguments that evolution deniers and anti-intellectuals make. I haven't seen the specific qi episode you're talking, but I'd hazard a guess that his "throwing a fit" was probably him making jokes, given that qi is, in fact, a comedy show

@@brettjohnson536 Your interpretation is a lot more generous than mine, and I might even agree if I'd ever heard Sean say anything remotely intelligent. Even in this bit he transitions right from "I don't need to back up what I'm saying because I'm not that insecure" to "I'm really insecure about stuff I don't know" - clearly banking on the fact that the audience can't remember what he said 30 seconds ago. As for the QI episode, I misremembered (indeed, Sean Lock and Brian Cox was never on an episode together). It is a conversation between Rory McGrath and Stephen Fry (who is in my opinion incapable of saying anything not interesting) that is rudely interrupted by Sean's toddler-y fit. Or "physical comedy", I guess. Here's the clip (2 minutes, 18 seconds): kzread.info/dash/bejne/X4J7sNCuXbjaXco.html
