Seal Rescued From Fishing Line

A very thin loop of fishing line had dug so deep into the seal's flesh over the course of a few weeks, possibly months, that a new layer of skin had formed on top of the injury. But the new skin just covers up the animal’s ugly fate: suffocation, starvation, and eventually death. Fishing lines are designed to withhold immense pressure. How is a seal, turtle, whale, dolphin, or any other species supposed to avoid this invisible, but potent killer?

    Thank you OCN and those that are like minded! It's absolutely DEVASTATING to see the HARM, if not DEATH that we HUMANS INFLICT on these sensitive, intelligent, majestic animals -- on a DAILY BASIS! We must do better! What I appreciate most is that the OCN team (seen and unseen) is all about action! Too many of us essentially are complicit with our silence and lack of action! We made this wretched mess -- now it's up to us to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for all of this DEVASTATION. Our actions (and/or lack of actions) DEMANDS that we CLEAN UP our destruction of this planet. We must also do all that we can to mitigate the exposure, the injuries, and the trauma that we inflict on the earth and her inhabitants. It may already be too late so time IS of the ESSENCE!

    Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

    I know this is a sad question but does ONC team check on dead seal bodies for entanglements ? I guess they mainly focus on suffering seals that can be saved and even if I think most of the dead seals are from natural causes at Pelican Point thanks to very regular patrol from OCN, I am curious to know if the teams checks those poor seal who didn't make it du to Human's activities.

  • @LiamWakefield

    @LiamWakefield

    This has become quite a popular question. Drones may help with surveying large colonies etc, but identifying the individually entangled seals using powerful binoculars and coordinating from the ground by radio has been found to be a very effective method. This is evidenced by the number of videos where the team are rescuing many seals in a day with little break in the activity. Previous response from Ocean Conservation Namibia: Drones are very useful to survey Cape fur seal colonies, especially during breeding season, but they are useless to spot entangled animals. The majority of the marine litter we rescue these animals from only weighs a few grams and is very difficult to spot from the ground - let alone the sky.

    Previous response from Ocean Conservation Namibia: We have tried different rescue methods and camouflages in the past and concluded that how we do it now is the best way. The truth is, seals smell us and hear us before they see us. We want to keep each rescue as quick as possible.

    Previous response from Ocean Conservation Namibia: Some of the few seals seen in this video might have been asleep, and some not. It is sad, yet perfectly normal, in colonies of tens of thousand pinnipeds to see dead bodies lying on the beach.Natural causes like predation, starvation and sickness prevent half the Cape fur seal pups to see year one. Older animals are also subject to diseases and injuries. We leave the dead bodies to the seabirds, jackals and hyenas.

    Some of the Cape fur seals seen in this video might have been fast asleep, but some were deceased. At 1:20 the camera is passing a seal that doesn't react, already dead?

    Noticed a few dead seals keeping the jackals fed, do you check them to see if they were entangled rather than natural deaths. Interested is all.

    On average, we 'only' find four to five dead, entangled Cape fur seals a year. Most deaths are simply normal fatalities, due to predation, starvation and sickness.
