    I can't tell you how excited I am for these. MicroProse was IT for me as a kid. Red Storm Rising. F-15 Strike Eagle. X-Com. Railroad Tycoon. Task Force 1942. And SSI wasn't far behind. Great Naval Battles especially. I love the rebirth of the brand, and I'm so stoked! Sea Power in particular will touch on an age that was contemporary with my childhood interest in ships. Cold War stuff was beguiling. No flashy Arleigh Burkes. Just good old Wainrights and Spruances and Californias. Mk 10 and Mk 13 and Mk 26 launchers. Backfires screeching in to lob AS-4s. Kirov vomiting out a torrent of SS-N-19s. Can't. Wait.

    I like Second Front's graphics as they are. It reminds me of the board games I play. I also think it will make it easier to run on a larger number of rigs. More important to me is a decent AI. What good are super realistic graphics when the AI clunks?

    I really appreciate Jo's vision of how he wants his game to be - he wants it to be a 'game'! Something fun! I also agree that realism can sometimes interfere with a game and I find they sometimes overcomplicate instead of enhance (Graviteam games come to mind - I love the series, but holy crap! The game desperately needs detailed / intricate tutorials) Funny I mention this and then Amiral mentions Graviteam and Combat Mission when talking about TFA 😂

  • @DrydockDreamsGames

    @DrydockDreamsGames

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, don't put game complexity & UI choices in the same bag though :) I mean, by any standards being based & designed along the lines of the references Jo mentioned, Second Front is a complex game experience, with a lot of ground covered by its mechanics. Where it differs from drier attempts is Jo's willingness to make sure it remains accessible, easily readable. He's not streamlining the contents (he is actually adamant about it being a game satisfying his grognard's expectations) but he sure is streamlining his interface & system in order to make sure that the experience remains a game rather than becoming a chore. We're not far off this doctrine either. We don't expect people to read 300 pages before they're entitled to understand how the game plays - we are more of the salt of the old guard, which expects people to read the 300 pages thing because they'll be entertained by the gaming experience, and interested about how they might better understand the environment & the setting in order to get better. I could play M1 Tank Platoon when I was 8 & TF1942 when I was 10 although these games were 100% in English in-game, I sure hope TFA will be the kind of self-learning, intuitive affair to. At least, that's our intent ;)

  • @jeffjensen8

    @jeffjensen8

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@DrydockDreamsGames Well, I think Jo should send you some commission $$ because you're selling me on Second Front more and more 😁 As much as I love the more "simple" war games, like Panzer Corps, Order of Battle, etc. I often am wanting more, like War in the East or Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm. If Second Front can end up somewhere in between, I'd definitely love that. Also, I think I was a bit too vague / ambiguous with how I worded my message about realism and overcomplication. I tend to love complexity and realism though in some cases (I'm failing to think of examples at the moment - typical!) it feels like the "fun" factor can be put behind "realism". I think there's a fine line between realistic fun and tedious fun, though. I think I should take a second to make it clear that Graviteam and Combat Mission are actually among my favorite war games series', and I'd say Combat Mission IS my favorite! The WeGo system is just.. genius. I'm frankly surprised more games have not utilized it!. I just wish that Graviteam could clean up the UI and give clarity to most things in the game. I'm writing way too much here so I should probably end it short by saying I'm really looking forward to all 3 of the games talked about here in the podcast. I'm a glutton and can't wait to hear and see more news about all of them!
