I still wonder, how come SRK didn't win a national award for this performance but instead Saif Ali Khan won for Hum Tum. Although I am not an SRK fan, but still I believe that he really deserved national award for this movie.

What's happening here? 1. The obvious. Mohan is coming back from meeting the poor farmer Haridas and has witnessed first hand the cruelty and unfairness that was doled out to him. A julaha (weaver) who was ostracized and left to starve only because he dared to switch professions to become a farmer. Mohan is deeply disturbed by this. And when he sees another poor child selling water he tries to do his part, buy a cup of water from him. 2. The theme. Mohan was born in India but he has not been an Indian for a long, long time. He sleeps in a RV, drinks packaged water, dabbles in superficial arguments about India's problems with Gita. This is the moment he decides to reforge his bond with his motherland. He's just not drinking normal tap water, he's drinking India in, again. With all her problems and injustices and imperfections. Just like this cup of "impure" water. It is truly in this moment that Mohan starts becoming an Indian again. PS: a lot of people are saying the writing is mediocre, its only the performance that elevates this scene. No, the writing is beautiful. Its very layered and nuanced.

This shows the power of a strong director, actor and the music composer. On paper it's not such a strong scene, simple scene. But the way it is executed is perfect and elevates it to a strong, moving scene. The director kept it very real and a very good shot initially with the boy running and giving us an aerial view. Shahrukh was spot on with his emotions just perfect amount. And AR Rahman background score just elevated the scene :)

If actor is the heart and soul, director the brain, then writers are the entire skeletal framework of the body! This scene is written very well and both the water boy and SRK emote it equally good, doing full justice to the writing.

What a masterpiece this film is. It's a shame that the Indian cinema-going public wasn't, isn't and never will be ready to accept such brilliant films. This is one of the very few Indian films that demonstrated patriotism and love for ones country without having to resort to any kind of jingoism. Fantastic.

These 2 minutes of SRK were more valuable than Tushar kapoor and Arjun kapoor's acting careers. Exceptional acting.

I have seen movies. From west to east... From british to french... From american to iranian.... Russian... There had been some great movies.... Hitchcock to Godard to Truffaut to Bresson... . From Kurosava to Satyajit Ray... They were the finest directors.. They made some classic movies.. I love them.... But this scene evokes a certain emotion.. In this scene SRK and Ashutosh transcend boundaries.. They deliver so much with such a small screen time... The impact of this is immeasurable. I re watch this movie for this scene.. And the immortal song... Ye jo desh hain tera... Swades hai tera!

@@i_am_rachit7972 It matters because it was an awesome scene in this movie. Very emotional. I just wished that scene to be more accurate. I have lived/travelled in India during that time and 25 paisa had long gone by that time (years 2003-2004). In those days, Smallest transactions in India with a coin were conducted with a 1 rupee coin. and, I can recognize the coin that it is indeed a 1 rupee coin. The water-boy should have been saying "1 cup of water for 1 rupee". and, if he was indeed selling for 25 paisa, he would be trying to return 75 paisa to SRK. But, he didn't.

@@StudSanta Yes, The water-boy is saying clearly that one cup of water is 25 paisa. However, when SRK hands him the coin, THAT COIN is a 1 Rupee coin. I recognize it. To be more accurate, he should have been selling the water for 1 Rupee.

Honestly, I've seen countless sad scenes, but this one brought tears to my eyes greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩 🇮🇳

0:47 ARR shows us the beginnings of a massive swell of emotions, slowly building up increasingly intense attention 1:19 the dissonant whistle of the train really brings the tension of the scene to a breaking point, the hair on your body stands 1:28 the score explodes in that high violin part and wrenches our guts as the swades theme plays Rahman sir just really hit this one out of the park. He's known for so many great BGMs but this is better than most. Better than those Roja, Bombay, Dil Se scenes. This one is so subtle and achieves an astounding effect with no extraneous or overwrought melodrama.

If you were blind or close your eyes and hear this scene... The musical notes are enough to move you.. Such is the score!!! This man is a true hero who is a son for ages.

This is by far one of the finest scenes produced by Bollywood. There were no dialogues, but the way we could understand Mohan's feelings is the outcome of great direction!

Emotion SRK creates sets him apart from many actor's in the world. He should do such beautiful roles and films.

Only a good director can get best out of actors like Shahrukh This sequence/scene is upto the mark of international movies' standard I watch this every month,and it makes me cry every time Kudos to the director,actor(including that water boy),music, editor, script writer..and whole team

This scene is where I actually felt a wide array of emotions. Swades is the true patriotic movie which teaches constructive love for a country.

Ashutosh gowarikar is a pure gold. His films proves his class and thoughts and never disappoint.

Script forget to mention AR Rahman score which elevates the scene and emotion to the core at the end 🙌

Shahrukh Khan is a gem in acting field like albert Einstein in science field,world don't recognise their best work at real time but after some years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have seen this movie more than 100 times but Whenever i see this scene I Just can't hold myself, this scene makes my heart heavy i just sit quiet for couple of minutes. We all have felt this helplessness , anger , sorrow and again helplessness when we witnessed such poverty stricken people who we know are being denied equal opportunities and do not have ample resources to live a dignified life . I feel world is a better place and our surroundings become beautiful if when we walk around roads and find happy and smiling faces but we often witness individuals who live without self respect let alone dignity . I may sound too pompous but this scene , I return to only to question my actions and what I have been able to do with little privilege I have to make difference to others life in order to make them smile .

The way this scene was set up was wonderful. Everything before that scene culminated to changing Mohan and he for the first time didn't drink the packaged water. What an excellent movie Swades was in 2004 . Just cant believe, the movie did not do well that year. If it had released in 2023, It would have changed the way people look at India. It would have been a smash hit. Ashutosh is very unlucky to release it in 2004, because it was way ahead of the thinking people had 20 years back
