SCP 096 is a humanoid creature measuring approximately 2.38 meters in height. Subject shows very little muscle mass, with preliminary analysis of body mass suggesting mild malnutrition.
SCP096 is normally extremely docile, with pressure sensors inside its cell indicating it spends most of the day pacing by the eastern wall. However, when someone views SCP-096's face, whether it be directly, via video recording, or even a photograph, it will enter a stage of considerable emotional distress. SCP-096 will cover its face with its hands and begin screaming, crying, and babbling incoherently. Approximately one (1) to two (2) minutes after the first viewing, SCP-096 will begin running to the person who viewed its face.

I knew SCP-096 was an psychologically tormented man, but I never expected him to kill people because he hallucinates his surroundings as the mountain he was on and the people who see him as the entity that ruined his life which was SCP-1529: King of the Mountain.

SCP 096 is one of my favorite SCPS, and now that I know his origin, I feel sorry for him, its not his fault he's a monster
I mean, this makes a lot of sense of why 096's skeleton can't be destroyed, if you go by this origin story the Shy Guy is basically cursed to be this way, his bones became unbreakable so that he can never be broken by climbing. Very good story.

I thought I'd see the story of how the SCP found the Shy Guy but instead I just witnessed one of the best origins stories. Implying that the King of the Mountain is the reason of the Shy Guy's existence is just incredible

There actually is a really good... Well they call it a "movie" but it's like 20-30 minutes, it's not about when they found 096 it's about one of the incidents when it breaks containment. It's one of the more notable instances of 096 escaping and if you like seeing 096 stuff I'd highly recommend it. I enjoyed it greatly.

096 (or Sheldon as I like to call him. Shy Guy - Sh eldon) is terrifying, but I'd also want to comfort him. Maybe if I kept my eyes shut, and blindfolded (just in case), and give him a hug? This origin story is far darker than another one I've heard; a child who has a strangely shaped head being bullied, and eventually running away seeking absolute solitude.

Now I have even more respect for that one guy that resisted The mountain king's "hypnosis" then proceeded to punch him in face and living to tell the tale.

I honestly just feel sorry for the creature. When photographed by the Desire Camera. The picture that came out was of 096's cell but with the creature nowhere to be seen. It seems all the creature wants is just to disappear. To no longer exist. Poor thing.

So, the king of the mountain is shockingly powerful it seems. I like this backstory, it adds a lot of intrigue to the king, and while it takes away the mystery of 096, it opens the door to other horrible SCP's being created by the king of the mountain.

Shy Guy has to be one of the most tragic anomalies ever. Sure Shy Guy might look and be scary, though it’s a depressing thought of why he’s like this, why he dislikes anyone looking at his face, there’s just so many unanswered questions to Shy Guy’s origin

Wait, no one ever thought of that. It might actually work. But this is the foundation. It'll likely end up as tales and not as in-universe canon. But the two methods you pitched up though...
I always had that theory that The King of The Mountain was responsible. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought this might be one possible origin story.

No, it's not canon. The origin of the Shy Guy was deliberately vague, yet there's only a few things we do know. It seems his natural habitat is in the Himalayas, as when he's calmed down from a rampage he'll attempt to wander back home after a few hours. Who he is (if he was indeed human to begin with) is unknown.

That's one of the reasons I don't like this story, the mountaineer could have just left the mountain.
My first thought seeing it's face is, "Wow, I hate that." Fantastic quality as always I see from the good doctor.

At first I thought that the red ring around people that look at you while you are playing as 096 in SCP:SL was to track them, because of 096’s ability to know exactly where someone who looked at it is, but i think it makes more sense that it knows this out of hatred towards the King, wanting to ruthlessly hunt down anyone that looked at it with those orange glowing eyes that it hallucinated and thought were there in place of the person’s actual eyes

Don't me wrong, 096 is definitely one of the most interesting SCPs, at least from the first series of SCPs (002-999) but just as there can be multiple 001 proposals that can be the real 001 as well as one of them or none, same goes for the origin story of each SCP thanks to the multiverse theory.

He's not that powerful really. Read the original article, SCP-1529 got punched in the goggles by some random Joe and was recovering from it for weeks. Also, he's not dumb, he wouldn't create himself an enemy orders of magnitude more powerful than himself.
I like that Dr Bob primarily tackles less known SCPs. Especially not the super Mary Sue world ending kinds. But it is nice that from time to time he looks at the well known classics :)

That doesn't explain why he attacks even if someone simply sees an image of him from far away. Also, it feels more like he's sobbing because he doesn't want to kill, but is in a total lack of self-control, making him cry after he killed those he didn't want to kill...

Also, SCP-1529 doesn't have all those god-like powers that were shown in the video. Just read the original article for SCP-1529, blud got punched in the face by a non-anomalous human, shattering its goggles, and was then recovering for weeks, there's no way in hell he could defeat the Shy Guy, let alone create it.

I feel so bad for him! He didn't deserve any of this. To everyone else he's a monster, but to him, everyone else is a monster. He's miserably crying because he can't find peace, he's truly broken, probably beyond repair, and has most likely given up all hope. He just wants to be left alone, for the rest of his life.

This would also explain why 096 goes into a terror state when met with a being he can't harm or kill, maybe it thinks it is meeting the king of the mountain again.
This is definitely one of the best theories I’ve heard about his origin in story.
I remember watching a theory video of this origin years ago, and it's a treat to revisit it! Any chance you will do a follow up about the experiments, the failed goggles, and the event that led to the termination of SCP-096?

@@joshwright4799 I have a feeling that 096 would hold its own for a while but Thanos could just snap it out of existence if he had the gauntlet In a one on one fist fight I’d say 096 would come out on top considering its indestructible skeletal structure and limitless stamina, not to mention its uncanny strength
This story felt like the story of sisyphus. Right as he makes it to the top hes forced to the bottom again. But he never gives up, one must imagine sisyphus happy

This is really interesting and makes a lot of sense.
This brings up the interesting idea of communicating with the creature if it was once human.

That was a really good origin story for SCP 096, I always headcanoned that he was a leftover from the Seventh Occult War, some poor soul who was experimented on by the Obskuracorps and turned into SCP-096. This one's really good though, would've never imagined he could be tied to SCP-1529 so well

@@Nightraven4321 my guess a sense of vanity perhaps... he wanted to conquer the mountain ( asking the mountain king for the crown no less) and be recognized but he ended up failing , being beaten and broken in that form.

@@Nightraven4321he kills people who look at him as, according to the video, he kind of hallucinated their gaze to be like that of the king of the mountain’s. He has a deep trauma from what the king of the mountain put him through while the entire time the king would just stare at him. Tired of this, he doesn’t want to experience such a thing anymore and so he kills anyone who sees his face. Because their gaze reminds him of how the king of the mountain looked at him, the same being that caused him so much pain.

The origin story, though cool (pun intended), makes it seem that you have to directly look at the creature itself for it to activate. However, it can and "has" escaped containment after someone had looked at a picture of it. I doubt mental torture would give anyone the ability to know when someone is looking at them via a picture, let alone find out where they are in the world.

Honestly I would just wear a blindfold and sit with the shy guy and read him stories or tell him jokes and just keep him company after hearing this…

His story is really depressing if you think about it, he was just once a normal human, but corrupted by a entity on Mount Everest, never to be normal again and to be confined for others safety.

Wow! This is amazing, love how Dr. Bob gave the shy guy depth, what an amazing backstory. Although his story started off with him being smug and over confident in his abilities, it's sad in the end cos he didn't just pay for his arrogance so many other people did and probably still will.

Seriously, that story feels like it's desperately trying to be an SCP-1529 reference. SCP-1529 doesn't even have the abilities and behaviours described in the video. He hypnotizes his victim by making eye contact, then offers a gift (which I assume is a quick, painless death), then freezes the person. If the person refuses the "gift", their death will be slow and painful. NOWHERE does it say that he turns people into indestructible monsters that have the strength of a demigod.
