I've been there twice, only took the tour the first time, very neat place. My late Aunt was there with her husband around 1940, he was a San Francisco developer/real estate broker and had heard about this place and stopped and were looking thru the gate when Scotty drove up and talked to them and invited them inside. She said they spent the night in the guest cottage and left the next day for Palm Springs.

In that era, there would have been WAY more dirt road driving in California's desert, than nowadays. I had family in this region since before WWII, and heard the stories of people commuting @ 50mph between desert towns on dirt roads w/ their period vehicles. Sounds like a good way to hammer your ride into garbage :)

I went to visit Scottie’s Castle with my husband and baby about 33 years ago. Had a wonderful time!

Took a tour of Scotty's Castle way back in the 1970s with my parents when I was a kid. It was very interesting.

I should have added, Mrs Johnson told them that they didn't have a lot of help out there so would they mind having dinner with them in the Kitchen, which my Aunt and Uncle did! She told me they really enjoyed themselves. I have since read that they rented those rooms to overnight travelers

Wow, it’s been THAT long since I was there? Man, how time passes quickly! Yes, it is always better to see sites in-person but in a pinch a video can suffice. What a shame what those flash floods of SEPT of 2015 did to this place, hope it really didnt damage it too bad, and hoipe that maybe they can get it reopened for Summer tourist season of 2017.......

Andrew, the National Park Service web site says the castle and grapevine canyon is closed until 2019. The road was washed out and some buildings may be damaged beyond repair. What a shame, but then again, Mother Nature is in control especially in a canyon, even in Death Valley! Thanks for watching and commenting. At least we have this video to get us by! Dave in Montana.
