The Rock - On Alcatraz, includes cell block tour - Long Version - San Francisco Bay, California
As it is commonly known, the Rock was a high-security federal prison from 1933 to 1963. It housed prisoners who continuously caused trouble at other federal prisons. 36 prisoners made 14 attempts to escape The Rock. It also contains the oldest operating lighthouse on the American west coast.
The penitentiary is now a museum and a major San Francisco tourist attraction. 1.5 million visitors annually tour the grounds.
This video was captured in June 2013 with a Canon HFS-100 camera and a GoPro Hero2. It was edited with Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.

Nice video. I visited Alcatraz on 5/31/2018 and everything in your video looks the same as it does today with the exception of a few more areas on the island now being closed to the public (for safety reasons).

Thank you David for putting me onto this link. It is wonderful so fascinating. My Boyfriend's sister went round Alcatraz last year but where I live in England don't think this will happen soon - unless I get lucky! I know bad people were here but love the vibes and the warmth - sad to see it decay makes me cry. Again very well done. Music good for atmospherics too.

This is why the Internet and KZread is so appealing. Like books, it can transport you to many places and spark many feelings, but with visual clarity and stimulus. We are both fortunate to live in our respective countries and experience local sites. I would love someday to spend time in the UK; so much history to see, so little time. Thanks again for watching and commenting on some of my videos. I do appreciate it. Dave.

Just awesome photography and video editing! Awesome production. Just like filming tourist hot spots its real hard not to get tourists in the frames. Kolmanskop Ghost town is the same situation. Well done! One of the best videos I've seen of Alcatraz.

Johan, many thanks for your comments. I really do appreciate it. As a tourist to Alcatraz myself we couldn't get away from other tourists so I just included others as we toured. I tried to convey some of the isolation prisoners encountered every day on "the rock". The day was awesome and we spent as much time as we could wandering around. I do enjoy capturing, editing and sharing my experiences. Thanks again for your comments. Dave in Montana.

The architecture of the one building on Alcatraz Island virtually mirrors the Lincoln Heights jail in Los Angeles that was also built in 1931 right around the time Alcatraz was being put together

jeroen schoones Jeroen, I certainly wouldn't call this video perfect. In my book I feel each video that I produce should be better than the last one. Yes, while on vacation last year, I did shot this video myself. I always take along a tripod, compose my shots, and capture 75% more than I post on KZread. My friends know that they need to wait for me while I shoot so many small scenes. I generally shoot the same scene a couple of times from different angles. This allows me to analyze my shots when editing and choose the best for my viewers like you. I respect my subscribers and try to produce the best videos that my equipment (and knowledge) allows. Thanks for asking. I appreciate it. Dave in Montana.

Dave, really, you are a professional. I saw all of your 300 videos and I absolutely enjoyed the nice tranquility in the movements of your recordings . Even videos without some action gives me pleasurements because of the tranquility and the steadyness of your recordings. Sorry for my bad English! I appreciate your comment. Take it easy, Jeroen from Holland. (Tiel).

Spending time in the hole was this cold damp and chilling as it is described what was equally spooky was looking at the holes in the back of those three sales were those three guys got through and thinking that that’s where it all happened and then having the door open to the car door and seeing all the pipes they climbed up

Thanks for commenting Leonie. I think the answer to your question is the salt air and wind that constantly works against these buildings. Stabilization has been done to some extent, but I think the reason the prison closed was due to the cost of maintenance in this harsh, unforgiving environment. Dave.

So, what's the plan, Stan? Do they intend to simpy allow it to continue deteriorating into a ruin or are they going to apply some of the admission fees towards restoration? Also, do they occasionally have former prisoners, or native Americans who overtook the island back in '69, ever come back to recall their stories?

  • @TheMedionMark
    @TheMedionMark9 жыл бұрын

If you look at the truly bad condition of the building today, did the for example the government ever thought about restoration? I mean, did even the tourism from the last...well...let's say 30 years not bring in enough money for restoration?

All I see from this video is damage that can and should have been repaired. Out of all the tens of millions of visitors who have visited there over the decades there are a lot of repairs to be made---refurbish the place.

  • @davidegg22

Ben, the National Park Service is repairing/replacing items that are a hazard to the public. The iconic water tower was close to collapse before they spent over two million dollars to rebuild it. They are now working on the main guard tower above the dock area. Salt air continually eats away the metal and concrete on the island. It is best to try to leave as much as possible original so that we can all see what a hardship it was to work/live on The Rock. Dave.
