Scotti Hill, Skid Row: HIS SUCCESS SERENDIPITY, GREAT STORY

Музыка

On this interview, Skid Row Guitarist Scotti Hill shares his early struggles and his dogged determination to overcome them - both personally and musically. The serendipity of a variety of events in Scotti’s life is simply amazing, as is his courage to roll with the punches… Story of Scotti’s sobriety, playing on SNL, jamming with Donald “Duck” Dunn, Shawshank Redemption, Skid Row’s ups and downs and the band’s determination to make it - a second time! Cycling, Japan, taking chances, and not sweating the small stuff, loads more. TOTALLY cool & inspiring conversation!

Scotti Hill grew up on Long Island and started playing guitar at age 13, at his sister’s encouragement. The guitar quickly became an obsession for him and when he was 14, his parents took him down to Manny’s Music Store on 48th street in NYC and got him a 1978 Telecaster. At 16, he began hanging out in the local clubs and playing in cover bands. Scotti joined what would evolved into Skid Row at age 20, and since then he’s toured the world multiple times, starting off playing corner stages in tiny road houses and growing to playing the biggest stadiums around. Skid Row’s debut album sold over 5 million copies. The band’s 2nd LP, Slave To The Grind debuts at #1 on Billboard. Scotti’s performed on SNL, Moscow Music Peace Festival & American Music Awards

I'm 56 years old and Scotties early years are just like mine. Dyslexia and left school in the 10ths grade nobody getting what was wrong with you. My father got me my first pawnshop guitar for Christmas. It was a Kay SG and to this day SGs are my favorite go to. Never made it as a guitar player but definitely enjoyed the 80s concerts and Skid row. Keep rockin

Their sound blew me away. It was alien 👽 I couldn’t be sure all the sounds were actually coming from just their guitars (and effects) and not synths or post production There’s great tutorials by snake on here too.

His dyslexia story is so interesting. I have dyslexia and discalculia. And when I was at a school they stamped me as basically a “retard” who needed special education. My mom was like: “he’s verbally far advanced for his age. He’s a wizard when it comes to fixing bikes and after a summer in Austria he also speaks German, that doesn’t sound like a mentally under developed kid”. So they pulled me from that school and registers me to a Jenaplan (sort of Montisori) school. And my teacher there was actually trained as one of the few in the late 70s for dyslexia and discalculia. And she was like: “Ray, isn’t under developed. If anything, he’s very bright. But he can’t absorb the syllabus because of both dyslexia and discalculia! We need to remedial teach him.” She spend 30 minutes before school every morning and 30 minutes during the afternoon 1.5 hour break to remedial teach me and a girl. In her own time! And she helped me and the girl so incredibly much. And if anything she got me to like performing. Because of my low self esteem (I truly believed I was dumb). I started to become very withdrawn and also stopped to speak to strangers. And she got me on stage to do a little play thing. And I loved it. I owe her so much! She was hated by all kids, because she was strict and nothing went under her radar. But I always protected Anne (that was her name). And years later I saw her again and I hugged her and thanked her for being the most amazing teacher I’ve ever had, who improved my life beyond a shadow of a doubt.“ she cried and kissed me on my cheek. Suck a cool moment. And then I realized I was then the same age as when she was when she gave me remedial teaching.

This is interesting! I went to a school where you went from kindergarten through senior year under one roof. I'll check that off. Next comes the 13 year old kid to guitar lessons, check. The guitar teacher's name? Ken, or "Kenny", check. Nylon string guitar, check. First really good electric guitar was a Telecaster, check again! There are quite a few more "SAME HERE" events that are all but identical, including opening for STYX rather than KISS! This interview very telling and REALLY similar to my story including alcohol and drugs. I'm sober a long time, Godsend! Very cool interview, thanks so much! I've always admired Skid Row!

I can so identify with him about how back in the day we would go see a band, work your way to the front of the crowd just to stand there watching the guy's fingers on the guitar. It's seriously was like getting a guitar lesson. And when you left the club at 3 in the morning, you would race home just to pick up your guitar and see what you learned. And for me too, Mark Hitt was a big influence.

Got picked on at school, Boy Scouts, the neighborhood and at home by my stepdad! But I finally found my calling which was those strings!! I got my first junkie guitar at age 14! Then got a really good Ibanez RG550 ! Still playing today except I play 7 string guitars instead of 6…
