Scott Cao Bench Made Violin - Thais Meditation

"Baron D'assignies" replica, Antonio Stradivari 1713
This violin is bench made, start to finish, by Gold medalist Scott Cao himself! Scott has won countless awards at the Violin Society of America, and many other places. His violins are hard to come by as he only makes a select few each year. The violin comes with a custom certificate by Scott Cao.

    This sound every bit as good as it does when played by Itzhak Perlman on his Strad. That is meant to be a compliment to the instrument and the guy playing it.

    Around 2003, I brought in a 1930-ish bench made German Strad pattern to Scott Cao’s shop. I was low on money but this fiddle needed a neck reset and full set up, fittings, etc. I thought I was ok to get some extra work while they repaired that violin. 3 days later I got a call from them asking me to come pick up my violin, which they treated with a lot of reverence. The work was absolutely spot on, very powerful sound, and it was $350.00. Excellent artisan level workmanship with that kind of turnaround. I really like their shop, and their violins are somewhat of a force themselves! Great people.

    The tone is bright but not overly so and evokes a sunrise.It has balance and poise throughout.It seems really responsive with gentle subtleties; no extremes or a wild streak. It's a typical Strad model in my opinion.Very nice.

    We ordered two yesterday. I'll have information for you probably by next week. Scott Cao is in California and we are in Florida so shipping takes 5 working days. The STV600 has better wood and is considered a big step-up from the STV-500.

  • @musiclovergeek1251
    @musiclovergeek12517 жыл бұрын

    I'm wondering. What difference does Ebony, Boxwood or Rosewood fittings make on the instrument in regards to sound and playbility etc. As a violist possessing a fiddlerman artist viola, mine has ebony fittings. I would prefer rosewood in all honesty, but I'm wondering if Ebony poses a greater advantage over rosewood or boxwood and vice versa.

  • @1stfiddlerman

    @1stfiddlerman

    7 жыл бұрын

    There isn't that much difference in sound. The Ebony sometimes gives a darker sound because of the more dense wood but it's barely noticeable.

  • @musiclovergeek1251

    @musiclovergeek1251

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well, what about ease of turning? I've heard that Ebony is the hardest out of all three, while boxwood is the softest, unless it's the good "buxus wood" which is still softer than ebony, but harder than rosewood. I've also heard that steel strings will cut through boxwood fittings really quick, though. Which one is the easiest to turn?

    You are right but this is technically an American violin, made in California. :) Scott Cao is an artist. Such an amazing maker. The problem is that his name goes on all his brand violins including the low budget models. The bench made instruments are REALLY special. We've sold 4 of them to full-time professional symphony musicians.

  • @annettenelson3453

    Fiddlerman why is it a problem for Scott Cao to put his name on a low end violin such as the one I just bought (905) and his bench made? He does put the label inside of the violin, so you know exactly what you are getting. I have never been to a concert where the violins had pice tags hanging from them or how and where they were made. What really matters to our ears is the sound that is created...by the instrument and MOSTLY by the musician. I personally could not make the most expensive violin in the world sound any better than a beginner...(no, I cannot even call myself a violinist yet!). Someday, when you are long gone Pierre, your personal violins should be the bench made price or much higher...my opinion.

  • @1stfiddlerman

    @1stfiddlerman

    @@annettenelson3453 The label shows that the lower models coming from his workshops are "Scott Cao", just that he must distinguish between the higher end instruments to justify the cost. It would be fun to know what the "Holstein" bench (that's our highest end violin) will cost in the future. :) Cheers!
