We've finally made it to the end of the rebuild series and it's time to start this mower!
We've mounted a new Briggs & Stratton 550-series 3.5HP engine to this machine so we'll add 600ml of SAE 30 engine oil. New engines arrive without oil so it's imperative to add oil before attempting to start the engine.
The engine shipped with 1L of Briggs & Stratton-branded oil as part of a special offer by Small Engine Warehouse Australia to members of the Scott Bonnar Restorations group so be sure to look into that if you're replacing your engine.

The outdoor temperature determines the oil viscosity to use for your engine. SAE 30 oil is a good oil choice for a range of temperatures between 4°C and onwards beyond 40°C. Refer to the engine's operator's manual if you prefer to use an alternate viscosity oil like 10W-30 or synthetic 5W-30.
Be sure both front and rear oil drain plugs are installed before filling. The mower is also placed on a flat surface to ensure the correct oil level is achieved and avoid spills.
These engines will take 540 - 590ml (18 - 20 oz) of oil. Use an oil funnel and fill to the top of the oil fill hole threads.
The engine oil is at the correct level when the dipstick is inserted into the oil fill hole and a reading of 'F' (full) is achieved.
We'll need to change this oil after the first 5 hours of operation.
Next, we'll add fuel. We're using regular unleaded petrol. Running a fuel with a higher octane will cause your engine to run hotter than necessary and is not recommended.
As this is a four stroke engine there's no need to mix oil and petrol (in other words, DO NOT add oil to your petrol!).
If you haven't done so already, add three drops of oil in the oil hole of the thrust pad at the cutter clutch and a drop of oil into the clutch cone is required each mow.
Let's finally start this mower!
We don't want any unnecessary load on the engine so we'll make sure the cutter clutch is disengaged.
Assuming the spark plug is connected, we can open the engine's fuel tap, close the choke (move the choke lever to the Start position), and move the throttle to the Fast position. We then turn the Stop/Kill switch to the On position.
With the area clear we can pull the starter cord slowly until resistance is felt and then pull rapidly to start the engine.
Once started, we move the choke control to the run position as the engine warms up. As per the manufacturer's instructions, we operate the engine with the throttle in the Fast position.
To engage the cutter clutch, close the throttle to reduce the engine speed. Then engage the cutter clutch and return the throttle to full speed.
We can stop the engine at any time by turning off the stop switch--and it may be advisable to do so sooner rather than later, so be prepared.
From there, it's time to mow the lawn… er, larn! ;)
⚠️ Your safety is your responsibility. Don't forget to disconnect your spark plug before starting work on your machine and always read and follow the instructions/labels on your equipment, tools and chemicals. ⚠️

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

Been looking at your videos to assist with the replacement of my clutch and pto shaft. I noticed you had a clunk noise when engaging the clutch at full revs. I’m getting this clunk noise when I engage the reel at idle. Is there a way to stop this noise?

Have you tried easing the clutch lever into the engaged position? How much play do you have between clutch cone and PTO shaft? Might be worth pulling the clutch down to check the woodruff key and any other wear

Say your starting it cold do you need the throttle on full and when you start it warm do you need it on full or can you do it at low revs (with choke off because it’s warm)?

I always start it cold at full throttle with the choke on. From warm you can likely restart with choke off but I usually keep the revs up (I run the engine at full throttle as per the manufacturer's instructions)

Great job mate, mower looks killer! Quick Q, why did you go for that front roller? What's the main difference between that and the stock one?

Hey Richie--thanks mate! At the time, I was growing mainly Empire Zoysia and cutting it quite high so I wanted to go a high-cut roller and I liked the idea of the open roller to avoid flattening the grass blade before the reel can cut it. I also liked the "good enough" match between the zinc-plated front roller, the brass height adjuster knob and the brass clutch knob. In use, this machine stipes the lawn to an extent but I wonder if it would do a better job with a solid front roller so I'll one day be replacing this one with a solid front roller from Mowpartsoz. I've installed George's roller on other machines and they're quality stuff. Oh, and the modern rollers (this one and George's one and Shane's one, from Moteck) all include bearings so that's the other main difference between the originals with the plastic endcaps. George's tube is also a bit larger whereas Shane's matches the original diameter.
