CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) speaks man-to-man to Frank (Al Pacino) and talks him out of shooting himself.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Driven by an extravagant, tour-de-force performance by Al Pacino, Scent of a Woman is the story of Frank Slade (Pacino), a blind, retired army colonel who hires Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell), a poor college student on the verge of expulsion, to take care of him over Thanksgiving weekend. At the beginning of the weekend, Frank takes Charlie to New York, where he reveals to the student that he intends to visit his family, have a few terrific meals, sleep with a beautiful woman and, finally, commit suicide. The film follows the mis-matched pair over the course of the weekend, as they learn about life through their series of adventures. Though the story is a little contrived and predictable, it pulls all the right strings, thanks to O'Donnell's sympathetic supporting role and Pacino's powerful lead performance, for which he won his first Academy Award. Scent of a Woman is based on the 1975 Italian film Profumo Di Donna.

Yes, a very painful scene...but he's a man who can "measure" the dark, give it a "shape" and a "size" by hearing the sound of a voice, a laugh, a scent and feeling beauty by touch of his fingers...

If you show this scene (exactly this scene that you quoted the dialog of Al) to someone who doesn't know a thing about the movie or the actor (Mr al Pacino) they will instantly understand the definition of blindness and also the amount of sorrow that this man is experiencing!

@@Lord_Hillcrest01 , that's true, some people with vision can't see or appreciate the world around them. Being blind would be awful, but they say how much keener your other senses become. I've watched this movie so many times and only just understood why he doesn't kill himself. It's not because Charlie made any compelling case, it's that Slade did everything he could to test Charlie's courage, to prove that everyone was a coward in the end, but Charlie was unbreakable. He threatened to shoot himself and Charlie actually stopped him, which obviously surprises Slade. Then he even pretends he's going to shoot Charlie, but Charlie does not leave. By the end, he realizes that courage is still a real thing that can exist in people to a depth he thought gone. If Charlie could do it, surely he could too.

It's a shame that we don't have enough films like this around anymore. This generation gets remakes, re-boots, sequels, and super hero movie after super hero movie. THIS is an absolute classic. It's rare to a performance (by both actors) quite as mesmerizing as this. It is thrilling and full of heart. You care about these characters. Half the movies I see nowadays just feels...empty. This was full of life.

I don't think we give enough credit to Chris O'Donnell in this film -- particularly in this scene. He went toe to toe with one of the greatest actors of all time, which would be a daunting task for any young actor, and more than held his own. It's a pity the rest of his career didn't reach those same heights.

  • @OreadNYC

Granted, "Batman And Robin" and "Batman Forever" probably did a number on his career to some extent...but based on an article I remember reading many years ago, it was my impression that O'Donnell walked away from Hollywood for a while rather than the other way around. He's been married to the same woman since 1997, which should tell you something about him.

Chris O'Donnell's performance in this scene is WAY underrated....."you can dance the tango and drive a Ferrari better than anyone I've ever seen." ..... "get on with your life already"...."I'm ready"..... "If you get tangled up..... you just Tango on" etc. We won't even GO THERE with Pacino... HE is a Master! As is Brest.OBVIOUSLY. and screenwriters ....BRILLIANT! .......probably among the most moving scenes in the film. yeah, yeah, yeah... the tango scene memorable, as is the "Cradle of Leadership" monologue. O'Donnell is brilliant in the film and is often overlooked, especially in retrospect. I think Batman bolstered his career at the time but also ultimately type cast him as a hammy actor - and he totally isn't, with the right material.... He deserved an Oscar nom for this.

It's so sad because even though he is blind Colonel Slade is still the maverick he's always been. But as always he's too proud to admit it until Charlie threw himself in the path of the proverbial (and almost literal) bullet to save him. Amazing scene and move. One of my all-favorites.

0:47 For me this is the turning point in the movie. First two "get outta here"s are full of authority, but this last one ends with a heart breaking desperation. But there's a silver lining, he despaired because he realized Charlie is not backing off and this starts the domino effect for everything else to come.

Aaron Simpson The performance and film.....amazing! Direction, screenplay, etc. Pacino was nominated for an Oscar, too many times to count. "Academy Awards" mean nothing to me. However, he and this film are just one of too many others to mention that are equally as powerful. I could list at least another 50 "gushers" as you say. There is indeed a difference between fine film, and just another "movie." Yes. This is a classic.Look up Dustin Hoffman's speech at the Oscars when he accepted the AC Award for Kramer vs. Kramer....circa 1977 (?) It says it all.
