@@rkr6237 yeah..he did set the boundaries, and warned him not to call him Chucky. Early on, Charles said he doesn't mind Charles or Charlie, but doesn't like being called Chuck or Chucky. Im sure tho that he knew Randy would cross the line and give him the excuse he was looking for. But notice how he ONLY established those boundaries with Charles, and only attacked Randy when he continued to call him Chucky. He took the verb lambasting from Randy without making threats, or even really returning fire with his own insults. He pretty much even agreed with him. Frank is aware of his own faults and character defects, and knew that Randy was speaking true about him. Deep down, theres definitely some self hate there, and he may have even felt that he deserved what Randy was dishing out. But he wasn't going to let him disrespect Charles, who hadn't necessarily done anything wrong to deserve it, and had only ever been a friend to Frank. But you are correct..Frank was looking for an excuse to attack Randy. Fuck Randy tho lol.

Take note: Frank suffers all the abuse that Randy hurls at him, and even agrees with him. Frank only attacks Randy when he disrespects Charlie. Charlie didn't do anything to deserve it, and never does anything in the movie to deserve bad treatment (such as being expelled), while almost everything Frank does up until the final speech scene is worthy of criticism. This scene is a microcosm of the whole movie. Absolutely brilliant

You can tell that when Charles starts to stand up for Frank that that’s the turning point in their relationship. Where Frank learns that Charles is more than a caretaker but really his Friend, practically his only friend. You can see it all on Al Pacino’s face, because he’s such an incredible actor

Yeah and it wasn’t because he was blind, Charles spoke up because he felt Frank was not only the nephew’s uncle but he was also an elder. You can tell it’s just the way he was raised. Charles hadn’t even been with Frank that long before this scene and deep down he knew he wasn’t all bad, which was why he had learned so much from him. The nephew was a disrespectful ass before they even sat down for dinner. I know one thing, you saw Frank’s brother tell his son to knock it off. Doesn’t matter how old you are, when your parents tell you to shut that mouth, listen up. Everything you THINK you know or have seen is NOT the whole story.

That's not it, my 2022 friend. He used the insults against Charles as an excuse to attack. He couldn't attack the guy before that, because everything in the story was true.

One thing I love about this scene is Franks older brother, while their relationship is strained, Frank’s brother still stands up for him. Always a tear jerker moment, and an accurate reflection of how brothers are.

Charlie showed integrity, and Randy was tampering with that integrity by knowingly calling him something else. Of course Frank got angry.

It's a big scene--a lot of layers. Randy was easily manipulated into lowering himself to the occasion. Frank was fishin' to see if his family had as low a regard for him as he had for himself--providing yet another reason to end his life. However, despite his past, there was a glimmer of hope if someone who's soul was as "intact and non-negotiable" as Charlie's, was still willing to defend him.

Al Pacino is one of the few actors I've seen that gets in the character. At such extent, even the voice tone sounds different, its another man. As the blind, he talks to people as if he's listening to radio. You don't get ''Al'' on every character, you get the character, but Al seems to be just the host. Only a few can pull that off, I understand he is one of those.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the little look/smirk that Frank does at 2:28 He’s surprised that Charlie (not Chuckie) has had enough and is brave enough to try and stand up for the Colonel. Just a little golden nugget in a gold vault of a movie.

oh yeah, Randy ain't been south of the border in years, probably has a tiny hog on him too. Gail's a very unsatisfied woman.

I like how in control Frank is during the entire time he choke-holds Randy. Most people would scream and cuss in rage when they are angry but Frank literally has Randy's life in his hands and he's being very calm and rational about it.

I love the subtle look that Pacino gives when Charlie sticks up for him.

Man, Bradley Whitford is such an underrated actor. Always loved him on West Wing and where ever he pops up. Killer performance and takedown going head to head with Pacino.

I disagree with people who say "but it's just being mean." No, it takes SOME acting talent to play a bad person convincingly. He did well here, I could feel his contempt from his behavior and body language, not just his voice. That takes a little bit of real talent. That's why some actors come across as silly when they try to play bad people and their performance just falls flat.

I still say this is the best scene in the movie, even more than his speech at the end..........It conveys the separation of Family and the isolation of a man who has already judged himself, not to mention how desperate he is and lonely. My late best friend was a fearsome blind man who would tear your head clean off if he got hold of you, Pacino put a tear in my eye with his portrayal of a tough blind man..it was 100% accurate.

Watched this movie in 1993 at 13 years old and it’s been my favourite movie since. Al Pacino is impeccable and Chris O’ Donnell was the perfect choice for his role. So many life lessons in this movie, a true gem.

At 5:46, I love the little moment when the camera lingers onto Frank, it shows his utter isolation and kind of makes it more crystal clear the fact that he's all alone and by himself at that point of time in his life, for whatever mistakes he had made, being at crossroads, yada yada. For me, it also renders the way us lonely people feel right after a conversation with people who never seem to break in the walls we have surrounding us throughout our lives. It's like having an affirmation that things can never get any better and that that's the way it's always gonna be.

(also I'm just realizing how lonely I used to be, fortunately I find myself in a much better place now, well sometimes. My loneliness mostly stemmed from the misunderstandings I had with people around me during lockdown, as it was extremely hard to virtually convey my feelings across)

@@anantambisht4895 Um, basically I meant that lonely people are sometimes like an impenetrable fortress. The thoughts that they have lingering in their mind imprison them so much that no other person seems to be able to help. It's not like they don't try, but sometimes you're the best you've got. Hope you're doing good.

Nobody could act a blind guy wonderfully as he acted in this movie ! Always loved his deep ocean eyes ! God bless him!

one appreciates the work of an actor for the details. Pacino's work is masterful. His body language, his way of "not looking", but especially the detail of putting his ear (2:28) when Charlie speaks, his face of shame when Frankie speaks (4:07). the characterization work he does is amazing and natural-

This is probably one of my favorite scenes in any movie. Not only the premise of the awkward dinner where he is not wanted, but the acknowledgement by everybody. And the fact that I as a viewer am so weirded out by the situation that I dont want to watch it, even though I love it. Typical "watching a car wrack" situation. The fact that Frank does not change despite of it. The fact that Frank first gives a warning before he goes for Randys throat for calling Charlie by the wrong name. His tone, how he takes everything directed at him as a mix between matter of fact and a joke. The fact that he has the same tone when attacking Randy. The concern of Charlie, who, even though he has shown discomfort with Franks stories and confrontational nature, just wants it to be peaceful and sees the hurt in Frank that he tries to play down. And a million other small nuances, like the other guy laughing when Randy says "its a touching story". That one showed real laughter, like the conversation almost took a right turn from awkward and uncomfortable to almost accepting. It shows that the whole conversation could have taken a different tone, if Randy would have stayed on that joking route. However, be it deserved or not, chose to pile on Frank, not pulling any punches. And of course, the end where Frank acknowledges that he is the one who blew it and probably deserved it all. Its just such a chaotic mess with Randy and Frank in the center of it and all actors playing their respective roles beautifully. This is pure art.

Somehow I felt the character absolutely craved love and affection, not people sucking up to his stature. And like Charlie once said later in the movie - he has a one track mind on women.

One of the greatest scenes ever filmed - the bond between him and his elder brother is rendered perfectly

This movie is just full of great scenes, but this scene and the speech at Charlie’s school hearing are just phenomenal, cinematic excellence!!

Gail is definitely unsatisfied.

Pacino has before told the story of the origins of the phrase, which is actually Hoo-Ah, not "HUA", saying how while preparing for the film, and working with an actual Lt. Colonel, who showed him how to dismantle a .45 in 45 seconds while blind. When Pacino would complete this, the Lt. would say "Hoo-Ah" to him as a way of saying "good job", and Pacino used this as a catchphrase for his character here as a means of acknowledging this.

I gotta say, as time goes by I kinda like the dressdown Randy lays down in this scene. That was wickedly crafted dialogue. The writers name is Bo Goldman and he made this for us. Thank you, Bo.

Frank protects Charlie! Maybe a father and son kind of bond! One of the best scenes.

Watching Al Pacino in this film is seeing a true artist. He's my favorite actor and he has given me many hours of great drama. I admire him so much.

Little that Ramsey know when Frank says "Ramsey look at me when you're talking to me now son" he was locking him in a position" for a chock hold attack that he was about to do lol!

One of if not the greatest scenes in cinematic history and Pacino carries off every single little detail to make it work. Absolute gem!

"I'm no fucking good. Never have been" that line hits hard as hell.

This feels like a typical thanksgiving dinner.

it's amazing really how one brother's silence can say so much in this movie. willie is almost silent throughout the whole visit, because there is nothing much to be said that hasn't already. and we as the audience can read willies face to understand. frank also knows willie well enough that a simple snort sound from him will tell frank all he needs to know. I'm constantly amazed by the writing.

One of the single best acting scenes ever AP is so good that he draws you right in to any scene he is in.

“What is this Frank?” Colonel: “Ranger Choke Hold” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 dead

What I love about the line "I'm no good - and I never have been." is that there is something about someone who is self-aware. Frank could have been a jerk and think that everyone should capitulate to him because of his blindness. But he knows he's been a jerk all his life (confirmed by Randy). That's why his brother Willy is being gracious with Frank.

Another priceless scene from this master actor, He told him He's been caught up in the sugar business so long that he forgot the taste of real honey, 🤣 and there's fire and his wife's voice😆, so many great lines in this movie.

Saddest part of the scene is the end .. his older brother Willie felt bad but was in a tough spot cuz of his son words and actions

One of my favorite movies of all time. Pure 90's gold. The one-liners from Al Pacino are a life school on their own as well as being rib cracking funny.

The reason that last line 'I am no fucking good. And I have never been' has become one of those powerful lines which people tune in to hear again & again is because it epitomizes what a lot of people feel about themselves deep within. Frank is not really a bad man - just a normal person with a good side and bad side, like everybody else, and he recognizes that. It is just that the cards he played eventually did not turn out in his favour. And most human beings are like that. Not perfectly good, but not completely bad either. But there are those moments when most people at least sometimes tell themselves 'I am no fucking good...'!

I adore this film so much. This scene always makes me cry.

2:12 The tone in Gail's voice is like she's thinking, even though Frank was out of line, he has a good point. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣

He is the best! #1 and this movie is my favorite movie ever!!!!

This is where Frank Slade decides that Charles is a person worth defending, in order to become a true leader in the future. This scene is where the seed of the magnificent speech in the final scene is sown.

"If I were the man I was 5 years ago I'd TAKE A FLAME THROWER TO THIS PLACE!!!" I have watched this movie so many times it's ridiculous. I never get sick of it. He plays every man's hero. He has your back when you least expect it. " His name is Charles..." or..."...but not a SNITCH!!" This movie is almost 30 years old...but I never get tired of it and I still pause it if I have to leave the room so I don't miss anything. Pacino is one of those rare talents that always leave us wanting more, and he always delivers. Well done as usual.

I can watch this movie all day long. Every time it's on TV I can't not watch it. There are about a dozen films like this one that I never get tired of..including this one, Shawshank Redemption (top of my list), Tombstone, Gladiator, Braveheart, Goodfellas, Unforgiven...the list goes on....

The genius of Thomas Newman from 6:20 to 6:37 with that genius pause at 6:30. Captures the emotion perfectly.

I love this movie. One of the best movies that All Pacino ever made!

Frank did cross a line. Justified reaction I'd say.

@@tmrevenge Frank excused himself when corrected. "Excuse me . . . Gail." So even if it had been intentional, he excused himself. Randy, however, was warned NOT to call Charles "Chucky" after the first time, but he did it again intentionally, anyway. So, he's a hypocrite for not showing the courtesy he himself demanded. You think Frank has thin skin? Randy's insults mean nothing to him. Frank hates himself. He's got his suicide all planned out. You think he cares what his punk nephew thinks? He compliments his sister-in-law on the way out. He confesses to his hurt brother who still loves him that he's "No fucking good and he never was." He's not planning on seeing these people ever again. But you think his feelings are all hurt? The man is on his way to killing himself. He put Randy in a choke hold because the prick insulted Charles. The Colonel still has some principles. His choke hold was to say, 'Hey, I already warned you the first time. His name is Charles. Disrespect me all you want, but respect him.'

@@CarlosEmilioEsq dude calling him Chuck does not compare with all the insults he subjected Charlie too. Watch the film again. From the very start he was disrespectful to Charlie and even his family, he threatened him because he dare to salute him. Frank is the kind of guy that thinks everything he does is OK but will take it from nobody, and of course he was hurt by Randy's words look at his face. The chuck calling was nothing but an excuse to get phisical. what he said to his brother at the end was his attempt at an apology. Because deep down he knew he provoke the situation and then escalated it even more

"You hear that voice there's fire under that dress." We definitely fighting after that.

His brother loves him. He sees him for the man he was not the man he is. That’s a loyal family member right there.
