It’s definitely a good place to start if you’re looking to start scanning yourself!

Nice, I made my first scans yesterday using the DigitaLIZA+ and was pretty stoked with how they turned out, and how (relatively) simple it was. Quite right about the first frame being a little fiddly, too, but all and all I was encouraged by the experience.

Sweet! I’m glad you had a good experience with it too! Scanning with a camera is vastly superior for 35mm scans

Awesome demo, Reimann. I’ve been thinking about getting this haha I like how it comes with its own light source that’s the right size so you don’t need to worry about masking it to minimize rogue lights

uh happy to see that you are working with tomography! The kit is really cool especially it has a built in light. I really like your results especially you are much much faster with it. :D Your drawback that the film must first be fumbled in on two sides is unique to lomography as they have decided that you can see the sprocket holes. With all the others it's like a rail that works the same on the first frame. Has its advantages and disadvantages I would say. I would not necessarily use a cell phone for scanning. 😅

Thanks for watching brother! Yeah I was super glad I got to work with them and test this out! Oh I didn’t know that the others covered the sprocket holes. Well that means that people who like to scan the sprocket holes have another reason to consider this scanning kit! And yeah I’m not personally all that interested in scanning with my phone, but I’m glad that feature is included for people who are getting started or maybe just want some quick reference scans

I like the fact it can be moved up & down and left & right for stacked super sharp scans. Tempted by the max model

Just made my own coffee stand out of aluminum. for the light i got a 95 cri one on Amazon and got the film carrier 3d printed. I might tag you on instagram to show it next time i scan!

This is a nifty demo thank you! Especially the quick compare to the V600 at the end. I use the Negative Supply 35mm Basic holder and my complaint is that it doesn’t hold the film perfectly flat. My D750 with 60mm Nikkor 1:1 works very well. Try this though: scan your c-41 negs as a positive in Epson Scan on V600 then convert using NLP. The Epson conversion looks terrible compared to NLP IMO, but the actual optics and V600 output is very solid, especially for medium format where I think V600 wins on resolution vs DSLR. My two cents.

Reiman, you can build your own copy stand for a fraction of the cost of buying one. All you need is a small piece of 3/4 inch plywood, perhaps 24 inches square, and some black iron pipe. I built my copy stand using 1 inch black iron pipe threaded into a flange that was screwed into my plywood. I also bought a Manfrotto universal clamp to grip the pipe, and attached a cheap tripod ball head to the clamp to hold my camera horizontally over my film. I have a hot-shoe mounted 3-way level to make sure my camera is square to the film. I can raise and lower the clamp on the black iron pipe and I have marks for scanning 35mm film, 6x4.5, 6x6, and 6x9 frames. You can also shoot multiple overlapping frames of a single negative and stitch them together in Lightroom to get a more high-res final image. BTW, I'm scanning with a Fuji X-H1 (24MP) and Tokina 100mm f/2.8 macro (native 1:1).

That sounds awesome! Yeah, I was planning on just building my own copy stand if I decide to scan with my Mirrorless camera because copy stands are super expensive for what they are. Thanks for the tips!

I have a really similar setup, but to get the camera level I just put a mirror where the film would go and adjust the camera so the middle autofocus point is over the center of the lens reflection on the screen. This way it's really accurate! Which holder are you using BTW?

@@grainynesh6232 that’s a good method! I just got a hot shoe bubble level for my camera to keep it level. Are you asking about the film holder?

You’re welcome! I’ve not tried that film holder yet!

The source light should be brighter and Lomography should specify the CRI level, imo.

For anyone looking for a copystand on the cheap I can recommend just getting a wooden board and a cylindrical furniture leg with a flange at the hardware store for a few dollars and then getting a Manfrotto superclamp and a cheap tripod head. Works better than most of the affordable copy stands even though it costs even less.

Thanks! I try to keep my negatives in sleeves until the moment I scan them, then I use a rocket blower to get off any stray dust on the negatives. The rest of the dust removal is done in Lightroom

Are the scanned photos good (resolution wise) if i use a phone?? Thanks for the tutorial and quality content!

Thanks for watching! I personally wouldn’t use photos scanned with a phone for printing, but they’re probably fine to post online

I'm surprised that you got better results with Lomography DigitaLIZA than your Epson V600 flatbed scanner but I guess that may be due to your choice of camera. For those without a scanner or digital camera the DigitaLIZA + MAX kit sounds like a great way for smartphone users to digitize their old film negatives.

Yeah the DigitaLIZA kit is great! The scans are also probably so good because of the lens I was using too. It’s a 1:1 macro lens so I could basically fill the whole sensor with the negative

How's the quality of the backlight? I've read that backlight should have high CRI..

I have read that as well, but the results I was getting with this seemed like they turned out just fine!

I noticed your conversions using NLP look a lot less magenta than many of your previous ones using what I assume was the scanner

Yes! Negative lab pro scans have much less magenta in them! Especially when scanning Superia 400

What colour temp did you set your DSLR to?

I believe I set it to daylight since I was scanning a daylight balanced film.

Did you find the light to be bright enough and a true neutral light?

Yes! I did find the light to be bright enough! And I didn’t notice the overall colors from the scans to look off so the light must have been pretty neutral

what if you´re scanning a single frame of 35mm? will it even hold?

It should be able to hold a single frame, but I don’t know if it would stay flat

You can use a DSLR/Mirrorless also right? Just use a arm?

Can you scan the film border of a 120 roll ?

From what I can find on their website, It looks like the 120 film holder will only scan up to 6x7. After that you have to do some frame stitching. Great question! I bet lots of medium format shooters will be curious to know this.

How are the phone scans results

I didn't actually scan using my phone so I can't say, but I would assume they are probably fine for getting quick reference scans or even for posting online to Instagram and stuff, but probably not near as good as scanning with a full frame DSLR or Mirrorless camera especially when it comes to making larger prints.

I don't understand the point of this approach. At first taking analog photos first with a bad camera. Then to digitize the film with high quality. Why not just take pictures with a bad digital camera?

The film look can't be replicated 100% . If you are fine with 99% your method works. The only reason to scan is to have some capability to print high res.. a traditional high res film scanner cost alot more. Plus this is fun lol😅😅😅
