    "over easy" Ahhhh I remember the first crumby lomography film scanner.... The scans from it suffered from crazy dark corners where the light pad wasn't even. Does this one have an even light source or does that get darker at the sides too?

    Duuuude, I've been really 'eggcited' to see a comparison of the V550 and Digitalizer max done over easy in your eggcellent manner showing those Sweet Lou tones....okay I'll chill now. Really glad as it's helped me really consider trying one after a few nights of home made negative masks, my DSLR and a white PC monitor (seriously, do a video on that, will be the greatest video the net has known!). Keep at the awesome content Lou.

    I just got into film photography and was researching what scanning process might bring me the most bang for your buck and the options really were pretty limited - it was either the Digitaliza Max for 110€ new or an Epson v550 used for 150€ - yeah I just ordered the Digitaliza Max - I think my phone camera (Xiaomi 11T) is probably plenty good.

  • @SweetLouPhotography

    @SweetLouPhotography

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah if I was just starting out I'd probably go that route too-- the v550 can be clutch, but it's soooo slow and can be so frustrating in many ways. But the bottom line is, as long as you're creating, it doesn't matter if you're scanning with a phone, a camera, a scanner, or a toaster. It's all a process. You can always buy another scanner down the line!

    Currently I am using an Epson Scanner 3490 for film negatives and slides. I never tried the phone or a camera. Seems like it is a nice system they have wonder why they did not put a bar with a 90 degree screw mount for a camera. Or offered it as an addon. Just like you have a choice of sausage or bacon with your over easy eggs?

  • @brineb58

    I think ultimately how you scan is the final intent of the image ... if it's just to post online, no need for super resolution ... but online your needs are far less!!! I currently use an Epson V800 for Polaroids/Instax and 120 film, I have a Plustek 8100 for 35mm film ... but asshole that I am, I pre-ordered the Lomo thing because I am just that crazy!!!

    Really cool. I have thinking of buying an old film camera but the costs of a lab or an expensive scanner really made me reluctant. This could be a good way to start. And first also do film developing in a lab and order some prints too. Funny that people went to film for it being ”real” and then they don’t print them, or?

    glorified shoebox w/o need for flash, definitely better for initial results than a small'ish contact sheet from the lab. Other option - led light with good cri rating and diy black mask on top

    the problem that I have had is how the film rides in the transport the film is not flat and I get out of focus edges so the 35 mm part of this is actually worthless for me only thing that I can use on it is the lightbox and I use my enlarger film holders because they hold the film flat very disappointed for the price that I paid for it

Made myself a 35mm holder from bootleg Lego, my phone screen light em up from the bottom and the lens is new macro tubes with a Carl Zeiss tessar and pancolar now. It does the job, buuut only for black and white. I'm not paying for negative lab pro 😃

    I batch scan entire rolls using a PIE XA Super scanner with Silverfast 9. I get 24mpx HDR scans with automatic dust removal. It takes forever, but it's hands off and IMO I get better results compared to my EOS R with NL Pro. I would love to see Logography fill the gap left by betterscanming shutting down. I really need some more holders for my V850 too:)

    Scanning with a phone seems like a joke to me, but then again, so does the compression on instagram and facebook. It looks super promising as a camera scanning option, though, with more flexibility and better price than other film holders where you have to buy holders for 120, sprocket holes etc. separately.

    Always a matter of perspective. I usually travel with my developing kit but no scanner, so I once built a primitive 'scanning' setup out of a negative mask made from cardboard, a diffusor made from a plastic shopping bag and my hotel night table light because I was excited about some shots on the film. I took the pictures with my phone, edited with lightroom mobile a litte and sent them to some friends as a preview. I later discovered a family member sent those previews away for printing and hung one in the hallway. Did not even understand what I meant when I said 'the real ones are ready now'. ^^ I guess for quite some people the phone snaps will be good enough. But of course if you know the potential the pictures would have with some decent scanning, you'll never be happy with the phone solution.

    That billboard sized resolution myth always makes me laugh. Billboards are designed to be viewed at a distance so they are made at only a 2 mpx resolution. To check it out, take a 4x6 print at arms length and see how close you can be to the billboard so that the print just covers the sign. But scanning wise, since I'm not the kind of guy to approach things in an "over easy" way, I have a strange scanning workflow that I think I'm the only one to use. I first scan all the pictures with a super cheap instant film scanner, you know, the kind of cheap thing with a button and a screen that saves to SD card that's designed for grandmas? Well, I get all the images out with that, clean-up the filenames and EXIF tags using a custom script. Then use another script to generate an index print. If there's an image I want to print big, then I bust-out the Epson 4490. This is how I scan all my 35mm. But now that decent autofocus cameras are coming out for the Raspberry Pi computers, I'm thinking of building my own custom "Frontier" like scanner...
