Sand Chute Shenanigans
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
While we were on other side of the state for the 24 Hell and Back we decided to take on Matt's challenge of the Sand Chute. We invited @FabRats to come along with us. We went down to he bottom and then had a game to see who went first. Paul won and got first shot. His truck did awesome and went right up on the first run. We went and right away was having some shifter issues. Most speed shifting an old 4 speed isn't great. Once we got that handled we kept trying. First we dropped air pressure. That got us quite a bit higher. Then we tried backing up it, that didn't work. So we decided to try a trick with my aluminum ramps... Which was interesting but unsuccessful. So out came our @pullpal land anchor. It did great and pulled us right up to the midway. In doing that the MORR crew showed up with the Broncbuster guys and they brought all the chaos. Once Jeff and Rhett made it up the Broncbuster rig was struggling due to a broken front axle. So out came the land anchor again and was used to winch him up to the midway point. Once there we tried multiple ways to get him up. We finally got halfway up when Paul's truck lost the water pump gasket. So while he let it cool down we winched Trailmater and the bronco up. Then once Paul's rig was cool enough we did one last pull with all the rigs pulling and got us all up. Paul decided to have us carry him out to avoid hurting his engine. So we got them back to the trailer and fun was had by some. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Loved how Rory emphasized that for anyone stuck in the sand chute to call MORR. He doesn't want that headache lol

I watched Paul's video of this adventure a few days ago, and it's fascinatingly to see it from Rory's point of view. I love Mike's sense of humour. He is so dry, and very funny.
Good video, Your truck is more built for rock and trail and hauling crap out rather than floating on sand. I wonder how the scrambler would of done.

I think Paul’s wrecker is a refinement of trail mater mostly because of the hydraulic boom capabilities if and when he has it all nailed down he might give Rory a run for his money. But trailmater has been solid for years and Rory’s experience is unparalleled, overall both great rigs both great guys .

Just like the wrecker games. Rory got the job done without tearing anything up despite not having the home advantage or the best tool for the job, and he helped out others along the way. If I get stuck or broke down in the Backcountry of south central Utah, I know who I'd call first.

Rory is one of about 4 KZreadrs I do that with automatically. (Matt, Paul, and Casey LaDelle are the other three.) It's my little contribution to help in their success.
I think trail mater did excellent because even if it went down alone it would have got out alone which it did because of rorys well planned rig.
The Sand Chute is a lot like the Bermuda Triangle. Not all that go in will come out. If something can go wrong, it will.
Oh goody , the other view of the Rory and Mike with Paul and Sean shenanigans ! I still think Paul should have had a truck hooked to the back of his truck " tow truck towing a tow truck towing a truck 🤣
WOW, this field testing event and collaboration with FR was awesome! Even better that both channels published their views of the results! Bravo to all involved!
I love Rory's sense of humor. 😊
"Sand anchor beats sand trap" is the quote of the day. The entertainment value on the Sand Chute is tremendous.
I think we have all been waiting for this video since Matt got in over his head
I watched Paul's video earlier, but they left out a lot of what TrailMater did. This video filled in a lot of gaps! It seems to me that the first one to go up the hill may make it, but the vehicles that go next will be in trouble. At least all the bad decisions made for great videos, and hopefully, everyone had some fun!.

Paul's truck weighs 2,000 lb less than Rory's. Rory did a lot better after airing down his tires, but still needed to break out the sand anchor to get up the first section. Jefe and Rhett blazed out of there without assistance, and helped pull out the 2 broken vehicles.
I'm definitely ordering a sand anchor.

Paul and Rory seen this challenge and attempted it going full bore and they know that their recovery trucks are not made for these serious sand recovery's and Matt's vehicles are better suited for them. The important thing they learned was have fun in a serious situation and get the Sand Devil out! Oh and AIR DOWN YOUR TIRES!
This was by far one of my most favorite episodes and its crazy how the camera doesnt do justive for how steep that hill must be! You guys most certainly did a phenomenal job 👏
That sand chute is a beast of an obstacle. Seems to require a very narrow combination of weight, power, gearing, tire tread, tire size "footprint"... Between you and MORR I've only seen a couple of vehicles power up it like it was nothing. Everything else struggles.
I thought y’all done good for trailmater not being build for sand loved the video
Rory gave a great effort; He is very skillful. Paul just kicked butt on this trail.
It takes all 3 rescue companies to save a Bronco on the sand trap. You didn't make a call, because they were already there. But with your sand anchor, you might have made it anyway.
This is very entertaining, you guys should get together more. You are the off road Top Gear

Except these guys don't gleefully ditch their broken down friends. Although Rory and Paul did make it a point to always call MORR for recoveries in the sand chute. Not them!
Good thing Matt's crew turned up 😂😂 This really does highlight the difference between rig builds.. some are for rocks, some are for sand, others mud...
I don’t know why but watching this made me think of a song from the musical Annie Get Your Gun I saw on tv when I was a teenager many, many moons ago! ”Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you. No you can't. Yes, I can. No, you can't. Yes, I can. No, you can't. Yes, I can; Yes, I can; Yes, I Can!” Including getting stuck trying to get out of the sandchute! This was a hoot, glad it didn’t take as long as Matt to get out! 😂👍💕
The good natured ribbing had me laughing out loud.
So every video on Matt's channel from now on will be a sand chute recovery. Good work men. Love you......
Great video! And yes, manual transmission any time! Sand sucks anyway.
29:26 I feel your pain, Rory. That rabbitbrush causing allergies this time of year is the worst--and you caught a bunch of it in the same shot as your sneeze!

I like the “hole digger” attachment you tried, that would be good for tilling soft fields! Auto trans for the WIN, they over heat when they are pulling stuck manual shift vehicles out!
9:12 - look at how steep that was! 😂
Rory you're so loved, one sneeze, you guys will be swamped with allergy meds😁
Wisconsin dude here. The first time I went off-roading in Moab was 1996 (19yo at the time, in July, driving an 89 Dodge Raider with no AC). The scene and times have changed. The Pull-Pal was certainly a real product advertised and used in the 4wd magazines of the time. Rory is probably the best rock driver I have ever seen. I am amazed by the skill and knowledge that he has. This channel shows that "old tech" 4wd works really well and knowing of when to winch. I want the trails to stay open, but if no one remembers "Tread Lightly"(and lots $$$ wreaking the trails) that won't happen. Pick up your trash and anything resembling trash as you go. Don't make a new line without thinking about it, and how others may follow it. (sometimes it can't be helped... I get it). These are the amazing spaces, that we can enjoy forever if we are responsible...
“It’s a very obvious poor decision … but it’s what we do!!” 😂🤣😂 Awe man I sure do enjoy these SHENANIGANS!! 👞 Uh, Rory… you’re missing a shoe. 15:46 😂

Yeah, sand is one place where you can actually use HP and RPM. Mater is a rock creature - torque and low rpm are what it does best. Pretty sure that's the junk yard 454 he pulled out a few episodes back vs Paul has a built big block. Question is, can Paul lug down to 400 rpm with a load on the back?
