    Dude straight on the truth. 1st he said 24 hours to wet sand, Then he said 30 to 90 days. Which is it. I'd rather wait 30 to 90 days. You will mess up the clear because it's to soft and not cured. 2nd: You will have a reaction in your clear coat folks. Just tell the truth!

    This is the most straight forward explanation on this subject that I have seen & it is 100% spot on, thank you very much, many people new to painting need this sort of explanation. Just remember that most paint/clear/thinner directions that are on the tin are written to cover all scenarios. The manufacturers don't know if you will be using their product in winter or summer etc. So they try to be safe and give you basic drying times to cover a broad spectrum of situations. As for me, well, I live in one of the hottest places in Australia where in the middle of winter the daytime Temperature doesn't drop lower than 24 degrees Celsius (75 deg F). At the moment it is mid summer and the Temp outside is 37 deg Celsius (98.6 deg F). I paint Acrylic base coat and clear coat regularly in this heat & only wait 8 hours maximum before wet sanding or buffing. A couple of times (in a rush) in summer I have even done it all within 4 hours without issues. But I do have to be super careful. Most days I have to use retarder thinner in my acrylic to slow down the drying process so I can get the stuff to flow, otherwise the paint & clear dries before it gets on the panel. But that is another story...

    Any reason I can't wet sand and buff the clear on my 68 Cougar that a friend sprayed in '92? It's always been stored, covered with a breathable cover. Spent a yr restoring it, probably a month for paint, sealed whole car after bodywork. He used high quality product, Diamont I think, from White Auto Body, it looked almost perfect then I sprayed and buffed a factory scoop 10yrs later and I can see a little difference, for the better, little smoother and maybe bit deeper, no peel. Had it appraised in 01, paint was listed as excellent.

    Flowcoat. Yes, hit it with 400 grit (to 600grit)first. Tony Ritchie and the Gunman do great videos on flowcoat/reclear. After watching them, I painted the truck Toyota OEM red pearl metallic color and 1med 40% solids coat with red/gold micro flake.004" then two med. clear coats over that. Waited about 2 weeks sanded again with 400 and shot High Solids 46% clear with 3 more light, med and med coats and I got a couple of little bitty sags but way less than I feared. Have fun and go it your safe. 1st paint job and I am so happy.

    There is a such thing as die back, but the sand and polish should have taken care of that. Years ago I did have a complete that never dried correctly. It stayed soft. It was very difficult to sand. The rep told me that I shot too many coats too fast, which caused this. You may get your paint rep involved because it could also be a bad batch of clear or catalyst. If anyone else has experienced this problem, please let us know.

    Should've waited 30 to 90 days for clear to fully cure. It has to dry and harden and bond to the paint. Don't ever sand and buff 24 hours after. the material is too soft and the heat from the buffer will whip and spin the clear because the clear it way to soft to take on the abuse. Straight Physics here my man!

    I don't understand what's the deal with "it's gonna be too hard to buff if you wait too long". People buff factory clear all the time, to remove scratches and restore that shine. It's not "hard" at all. I'd be more concerned about burning through the clear into basecoat, then you'll have to redo the clear coat again, and the buffing you've already done.

    This is a single stage you used? Solid colors you can sand and buff with no problem. However, if it is a single stage (no clear) you may disturb the metallic coat. Every brand of paint has different directions, but I thing you would be safe sand and buff the next day if it is not a metallic.

    I would wait the 90 days to buff and wax no point on buffing the paint if you can't apply any protection to the paint, there's a high possibility that you will scratch the paint in that time, just my opinion

    Ok, maybe someone could help me with this question. I've paint my motorcycle cowl with rustoleum gloss black, and cleared it directly afterwards. My question is, do I still have to wet sand and buff if it looks great, without orange peel , the way it is? Couldn't I just let it harded and be done? Thank you in advance for any help! Love the channel!

    As a side note. On this cowling. After the peice cured, I sanded smooth with 600 grit wet/dry. Placed OEM graphics, cleared again with another 4 coats and sanded 2000 grit. Then applied 3 more coats with the last 2 super wet. Turned out awesome!! No orange peel, mirror finish... I hope I don't have to sand away the look, but I want it protected from elements.

    My shop told me to wait at least 90 days before cutting and buffing my new paint job. Is that too long? I’m going to pay a shop to do the work but I get conflicting opinions

    How long to sand her after clear coat?

  • @CarAddictGarage

    @CarAddictGarage

    With the brands that I have used, I normally sand and buff the next day. It is actually easier to sand and polish before the clearcoat becomes fully hard. But don't use wax, ceramic coating, or anything with silicone until the clearcoat is fully cured.

    @@CarAddictGarage I mistakenly used my polisher to remove the harden part of a part on my hood with 800 grit. Big big mistake!😂 beginners luck I guess. But I’ll show you the after project in my videos I’ll upload one. It came out really good with the first two cans but it’s not rough now I’m buying this one that protects from the sun Even more. Hopefully 4 cans of clear coat is enough. It was shined and bright until I sanded her down with 800 grit on my polisher.

    after you spray on new clear coat you only have to wait 2 or 3 hours to sand it and you can spray on another layer of claer coat, you do NOT need to wait overnight, that's overkill

    No he didn’t, he talked about doing things and the outcome of it, but when he said I don’t know why? It’s a simple car wash after paint, I’m guessing he is not experienced in all or majority of it and different types of vehicles, it was not informative at all sorry guy, my honest opinion

    Dude not straight on the truth. 1st he said 24 hours to wet sand, Then he said 30 to 90 days. Which is it? I'd rather wait 30 to 90 days. You will mess up the clear because it's to soft and not cured. 2nd: You will have a reaction in your clear coat folks. Just tell the truth! Car Addict Garage
