Many thanks for recording this for us, James. 'San' was composed in 1920 by Walter Michels and Lindsay McPhail. They have played this one so often that I guess most viewers will have no need of time stamps; but just in case anyone wants them: 00:07 INTRODUCTION - four bars from the rhythm section, establishing the key of F minor 00:12 VERSE - led by Shaye, the band plays the F minor 24-bar verse 00:38 CHORUS - ensemble, 32 bars in the related key of A flat - note the surprise chord of E7 in bars 2, 4 and elsewhere - giving this tune its distinctive flavour 01:14 CHORUS - Craig leads over the full 32 bars in A flat, including a clever Middle Eight, involving the rhythm section on stop chords 01:48 CHORUS - Barnabus leads, also with stop chords supporting his Middle Eight 02:23 CHORUS - Brian leads, yet again with stop chords against the Middle Eight 02:58 CHORUS - ensemble, with Todd leading in the Middle Eight and Final Eight 00:33 CHORUS - with Robin leading, against stop chords 04:07 CHORUS - ensemble, with Shaye producing an outstanding improvisation over the first 16 bars and then directing a series of four 2-bar breaks by four different players over the Middle Eight. FOOTNOTES : (1) Admire Shaye's light-touch directions throughout, often using no more than her thumb to set up the stop chords. (2) It is unusual that they play the Verse only once. Normally Shaye chooses to revisit it at some point.

Jim, why do you film this wonderful, talented band where pedestrians or vehicular traffic is between the band and the camera? IMHO, it takes away from the enjoyment of listening and seeing the band.
@JamesSterling
2 жыл бұрын
Because that's where they were playing. And it is where the band loves to play and where they got their start, playing in the streets. Where do you suggest I stand. In the street? On the sidewalk behind the band filming their backs? If you have been following my channel or any of the Tuba Skinny Facebook pages you would be aware that Tuba Skinny and other bands took to the street that day to protest the City of New Orleans policy of allowing vehicular traffic on Royal Street instead of returning it to a pedestrian mall as it has been in the past. Watch the video of the confrontation with the policeman on this same day to understand. I was there that day because the band called me and asked to record anything that happened. That's why I filmed them there.
@Referee006
2 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSterling Jim, I was not commenting on the venue in which the band was playing. I was commenting on the fact that from where you were filming, there were many pedestrians walking between the band and your camera which, IMHO, detracted from the band and their music. Also, you seemed too far away from the band. Also, in a previous video, it seemed that you were standing across the street from the band because there was a continuous flow of traffic including cars and trucks, moving between the band and your camera which, once again IMHO, severely detracted from the band and its music. I would suggest that you move closer to the band when you film the band so that there may be an occasional person walking in front of your camera, and even if you don't get the entire band in your videos, you can pan the band periodically to capture each of the musicians playing their instruments especially when they are playing solos. And, by standing closer to the band as they are playing, IMHO the sound will improve greatly.
@JamesSterling
2 жыл бұрын
@@Referee006 I do not know how to make this any simpler. I am on the sidewalk opposite the band, as close to the curb as I can get. Between me and the band is Royal Street, which on that day was open to vehicular traffic. The only way to get closer to the band is to stand in the middle of the street where cars are passing. Think about what you are asking. I can't stop the traffic. I can't stand in the middle of the street and obstruct traffic. I can't stop pedestrians from walking in front of me. You have no concept of what was happening. I film what is in front of me and I have no control over it. Have you ever been to New Orleans and watched any of the bands busking on Royal? Watch the very end of this video recorded on the same day to get an idea of where I was standing. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJmZxst8g7Ccpbg.html&ab_channel=JamesSterling Again, the only way to get closer to the band is to stand in the middle of a street open to traffic.
@Referee006
2 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSterling Jim, I am not suggesting that you stand in the middle of the street and block traffic, nor am I suggesting that you stop pedestrians from walking in front of you. Why don't you place yourself on the same side of the street as the band and maybe stand a little off to the side of the band and not in front of it.
@JamesSterling
2 жыл бұрын
@@Referee006 OK, now we are communicating clearly. Good question, There are two reasons. One is if I stand to one side the microphone tends to mostly pick up the instrument nearest to the camera overwhelming the other instruments. The other is that if I stand on the side the band members nearest me would obscure the other band members. To the right of the band you will notice that Craig and Brian are standing which would obstruct the view of the other band members. Same thing on the other side because Todd is standing with his sousaphone. Now if there was no vehicular traffic I might be able position myself in the street diagonally to shoot at an angle but as already stated, that was not an option. Even then you would see pedestrians walking in front of the camera. I do not stand close directly in front of the band because it obstructs the view of others in the audience.

There are not enough spectators .. And how are the training camps?

There were many people on the sidewalk behind me and in a restaurant behind me, all enjoying the band.
Where's Erika Lewis, it ain't the same vibe without er .

Erika lives no longer in New Orleans. I guess since 2017. But she toured with the band every year and she appears often playing with the band on festivals too. So sometimes you see her with the band and sometimes not.
