Sam Elliott on the Most Heartbreaking Scene of His Career | 1883 Interview
Фильм және анимация
Sam Elliott is the personification of a Western superhero on screen. His tough-as-nails bravado fits right into his character "Shea Brennan" in the Yellowstone prequel 1883.
Sam joins Jon Stenvall to talk about his role as a broken-hearted widow and Pinkerton agent who heads out on the Oregon Trail to see the untamed West for one last time.
1883 premieres Sunday, December 19 on Paramount Plus.

I'm surprised no one brings up how awesome it is that his character is such a perfect example of classic masculinity and strength and competence while coping openly with ptsd, crying frequently, fully feeling his feelings and communicating with his friend about them. I mean that's an important and uncommon depiction that's acted exquisitely by Sam.

The reality of his character is that you are looking at Sam Elliot's persona. He is what should be the actual American male in this country, regardless of the period settings. Not what it has morphed into. Everyone has their thing, but holy shit batman. People look to him, and others like him, because they represent something they yearned to be.

@Ernest Paul that fucks me up a little bit cuz my dad used to look and act A LOT like him and as a kid, I always connected the two... but he slowly turned into a monster. He let himself get worse and worse until he became completely consumed by bitterness, laziness, fear, hatred and rage. He doesn't even talk to me anymore and idk why. I've really needed him over the years. I'm a single mom with ptsd and terrible health of my own after years of abuse from my ex (dad set me up for that one too, i didn't have a healthy reference for what love was supposed to be like). When i realized how bad it was, I got my kids out, but I cant physically do what I used to be capable of. I used to be able to function as a halfway decent man myself, but my body is broken now. When I was a kid, he taught me all about guns, fishing, survival and I picked up a lot about carpentry and plumbing being around him. I wanted to learn more, but he'd gotten too lazy and abusive by the time I was 11. He knew how to do so much. He was really smart and capable in his own way. I could really use him around to teach my boys how to do those things. He has a family. But he can't be bothered to be nice so he lives like we're dead. We haven't spoken in years. I know one day I'm just gonna get a call that he's gone. I have too much on my plate to fix him too, not that he would let me. So we both just ignore it. It's really fucked up. I can't tell you how completely different my life could have been if my dad could have just stopped himself from giving into his worst impulses all the time and stopped devouring an endless supply of rage and fear mongering on TV and radio every day for decades. Not the best way to cope with mental illness or become less abusive and reactionary. Wow. That's funny. I could smell the stale cigarette smoke just thinking of him.

@@potatopirate5557 Your story reminds me a bit of my step-dad, who was a chronic alcoholic; he was skilled in so many areas, & could have made a fortune out of any one of them- woodwork, metal work (especially welding), art, poetry, cooking & more - but he was lazy, emotionally & financially- he really liked to drink & would never admit that he had a drinking problem - my mum said his reply to that was his only ‘problem’ was that “he had two hands & only one mouth”. He stole from my mother more than once, which led to their first estrangement. When I was 11, he got seriously violent for the first time, & that was when their marriage ended. I like to try & remember the positive things about him, though- when I do think about him; him drawing for me, & helping me out with art- he once drew an exquisite scene on a sheet of fibro, with common ballpoint pen- & I will always remember how beautiful it was. It was the probably the saddest waste of potential I will ever know of - he had so much talent, & he just p*ssed it all away...

@OcarinaSapph1r3 -24 Thank you for sharing that. I'm sorry you all had to experience that. I think the reason they turn into that has a lot to do with their own neglectful/ abusive childhoods and probably mental illness in many cases. And that for some reason, they won't face it or try to get professional help, but instead, turn into the dysfunction even harder. Maybe its like addiction in some way. I tried to understand that and help my dad for a long time, but he always said something similar to yours... "At least I know what's wrong with me." Like he was better than most people somehow, and then he followed that with something about how he wasn't going to change, though. How does that make any fucking sense? I mean, first of all, he's far from self aware and more deluded by the day but if u know and u won't try to change it even though your family is making it clear that it is unbearable and unacceptable and it prevents you from knowing them anymore... I mean, how is that not worse? I know that I'm not a perfect mother. I'm not sure if it's possible to be one in my circumstances. In fact, I have to be a perfect mother and father all at once. But I'll never stop trying to be all of that with everything I have every day. Some days I do better than others but I know one thing for sure, four different families full of abuse and neglect came through my ex's parents and mine and into our children and I have definitely ended it here. I don't always meet my own standards for parental accomplishments, but I show up, I educate myself to try handle every problem in the healthiest way I can for them and I definitely don't abuse them or neglect any part of their development, needs or feelings. For four families, it stops here. I bet it stops with you, too. And there's a lot of people like us out there. The world will be a very different place in the future than what we were handed.

@@potatopirate5557 It is hard to get through to someone who doesn't appear to want help, or accept that they have a problem. My stepdad died before he was 60, of massive heart failure- he was dead before he hit the floor, apparently - like I said, I try & remember the good things when I find myself thinking about him; one of the good things about him- like you said about yourself: you showed up- & so did my stepdad- which, for all his many faults, was more than my bio-dad did.... I hope you are doing well, & that you focus on the good, & accept what you can't change - we can't make people be better, or honest- & we can't make them seek help; they have to want that for themselves...
He deserves an EMMY for this performance . It was POWERFUL 💥

I almost couldn't watch it. Seeing Sam weep like that made me feel broken. It's wonderful to see Hollywood wake up and appreciate the caliber of actor he *always has been.*
He’s doing an awesome/excellent job of acting in this. So glad that he’s finally been given an award worthy character to act out into existence.
Sam is a National Treasure. Loved him in Justified too. 1883 is SUPERBLY done.
Pinkerton was the forerunner of the Secret Service and as part of the Treasury Department was not only responsible for presidential protection but also investigating counterfeiting. They formed during the civil war and were railroad detectives. The precursor to the C.I.A. , was the O.S.S. (Office of Strategic Services) which formed during the second world war.

Sam Elliott is a phenomenal actor. He’s got layers & his character, Shea, is so unapologetically multidimensional. He has all the feels. And 1883 is quite the series so far. It doesn’t sugar coat the harshness of people moving west. The dialogue can raw, sometimes it’s pure poetry & other times it’s simultaneously both.
Sam Elliott Voice is like Honey over Gravel with a mix of Rolling Thunder.
Sam just oozes character. Have enjoyed him acting my entire life (almost) and his performance in 1883 should earn him many awards, simply amazing!
I've been a big fan of Sam for a very long time. I say that about very few actors. Beau Bennett was awesome and can't wait to sit down and watch 1883.
Truly could have never picked a better man to play this part.
The heartbreak of the first scene was intense probably a actual occurrence during the smallpox outbreak.
One of the most heartbreaking shows I’ve seen.
for me, i think sam is an amazing actor. ive watched most of the things he's been in and never fails to give it everything.
I'm from the city of Manila. This man can act without any words to say and make it a thousand miles impactful. A true Cinematic hero, interpreter of emotions. Mabuhay Mr. Eliott!
One of the most timeless actors around. Simply phenomenal in everything he does.
Loved him in “We Were Soldiers” and even more so in this great show .

That man needs every award they have for that Scene. I love Sam Elliott so much I named my cat after him.
Yeah Lamonica Garett is gonna be seen a lot soon I bet. Him and Sam together are two of best buddy cop combos in along time.
it's great sam get this role at this stage of his incredible career...he's always true and deep on the screen and you feel pretty damn sure, in ordinary life as well...

Anything with Sam Elliot is just awesome. Such a awesome actor.
Love this man and his westerns. One of the few that made westerns real.
Sam has aged like fine wine. Last night I caught part of Frogs from 1972. It wasn’t his greatest acting turn……but boy he came a long ways since then.
I'm so glad Sam got the 1883 role. He deserves to be in something that really celebrates his acting talents. He is perfect. I love him in 1883! I can't watch the ranch.

Yes, the opening scenes tore me apart hey, very emotional and well done too
I just love his voice. He could read the phone book and I would be happy.
My father was a Pinkerton. In the day, they were widely regarded as the American Scotland Yard. They foiled a plot to assassinate Lincoln while he was visiting New York City. They chased Butch Cassidy and Harvey Longbow (?) aka Sundance Kid out of the US to meet their fate in Bolivia. Got a bad reputation in the depression era for union busting. In the modern age, Pinkertons offered security services, armored cars, stadium and event security, private investigations and insurance investigations, a detective agency we were proud to be a part of. They exist now in name only as the last Pinkerton, who my father worked for, retired in the 1970's.

Love seeing you acting with such passion and believable feeling - intense emotional. You brought us to heartbreak and tears!!!

First time I seen Sam Elliot was in the Lifeguard. For some reason the scene where he was talking to someone and a mother in the background was yanking on a kid she had on a harness...and Sam's character snapped at her...can't remember what he said but it stuck with me. Anyways, I knew from the movie that Sam would be Star...a great actor. He proved me right.
What a good soul. Legend.

Pinkertons is an independent police force that was founded in 1850 by Allan Pinkerton (1819-84), former deputy sheriff of Cook county, Illinois. It originally specialized in railway theft cases, protecting trains and apprehending train robbers. It solved the $700,000 Adams Express Co. Pinkertons still exist in some form. First known Lady detective was hired by the Pinkertons in 1856.

Yes Sam does a great part, still remember him even from the original series of Mission Impossible series back in the late1960's
The only piece I can compare it to is the beginning of “Saving Private Ryan”……epic
