The problems aren't that SBF is being treated badly by the jail and the criminal justice system. The problem is that he's now being treated how everyone else is treated in this system... which is horribly

Agree. I hate it when I hear people crying for extra-judicial ‘justice’ of various kinds within the prison system. They’re there to serve their time and hopefully be rehabilitated, not to be beaten, rped, starved and medically compromised.

Hey, you guys forget, that E Holmes also put countless patients' lives at risk with false readings, resulting in unnecessary procedures. Also the loss of Singaporean tax payer's money and lost opportunity of a local Singaporean who could have gotten her internship position in Singapore when she interned here.

I feel like even people who support the concept of criminal justice reform tend to roll their views back when confronted with specific cases. It's a difficult position to take since you're technically siding with terrible people. The argument that we should treat criminals better will fall flat for most people. But dehumanizing huge numbers of people is just terrible for our society. Especially since many people have the perspective that poor/black/criminal are nearly interchangeable terms.

I spent eight weeks in a small corrupt California county jail a few decades ago. they teased and beat me until I passed out, ran me through a local hospital for checkup, then I was in a cell for 4 days before I was allowed to see any quasi medical professional for follow-up. I was also denied any needed medication but otherwise treated decently, though I am a straight white sis male so.... it's hard to ask local DAs to prosecute their friends and colleagues in-law enforcement and prison administration. I believe we desperately need a 21st century federal prisoners bill of rights. We need stop electing incompetent meme lords to congress, so that these kind of reformes are achievable. seems like our goal as society should be to reduce population by at least .66... then treat the remaining .33 .500 times better. cash bail is a holdover from the days of where no one had an ID and there was no GPS no interpole or much inter colony cooperation. it's an outrage that these wealthy people can use allegedly stolen funds for bail and to put on a fancy expensive defense etc. it seems a form of asset freezature needs to be enforced when they defendant is allegedly using stolen funds to defend against the victims whom they robbed.

Exactly. It's not a question of if his rights should be honored, but a question of priorities. There are a lot of people at Rikers getting abused and tortured in solitary, yet that doesn't get the attention that SBF gets for not getting vegan meals

Great points you are bringing up! And what you said was right, that fixing the broken judicial system in the US is much more important than the temporary schadenfreude we get from seeing SBF getting a taste of it. Thanks for using your platform to spread that message.

"A society should be judged not by how it treats its outstanding citizens but by how it treats its criminals." It is especially hard to want to treat people who have harmed others, like criminals, with any degree of fairness or humanity. But as fellow humans, that's what is right and that's why we should. (Annoying, though... isn't it? 🙃)

No one commented on Cas's jars of Opium and Heroin? lol! Back on topic... what about the Jan 6 prisoners? Guantanamo Bay. 😕 On July 23, 1846, Henry David Thoreau was arrested and jailed for not paying his taxes in Concord, Massachusetts. He refused to pay money that would support the war against Mexico and hated slavery. The incident prompted Thoreau to write his famous essay, "Civil Disobedience," which was published in 1849 as "Resistance to Civil Government." The play "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail," written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, was first published in New York in 1971 during the Vietnam War. The play was a clear protest against the war and used a related incident from America's history to comment on the current war. According to legend, while Thoreau was in the Concord jail, his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson came to visit him and asked him why he was not there. Thoreau's response is "Why are you not here?"

Its good that you guys put this episode out. SBF in my opinion deserves to spend the next 30-40 years in prison (as do many of his crypto compatriots) however that does not mean we have to be inhumane about it. Making sure the basics of someone getting their medicine and having a diet that fits their morals and or religious beliefs is the bare minimum. I am not sure a Scandinavian style prison system is the best (I live in a different part of Europe and these structures are not working as well as people would like) however the American system is predicated on at best borderline human rights violations. In the end I hope SBF is convicted and spends decades in prison, but I want it to be humane. I dont believe someone like him can be rehabilitated; but as you said he has no chance of any kind of rehabilitation if he is denied the basics.

I couldn’t dredge up a scrap of empathy for SBF if I had a gun to my head, but if assuring that he gets his meds and stupid vegan meals ensures that other detainees receive the same then I would have to support it. Redicivism (is that the way it's written - English is not my first language) should be foremost here. It's much lower in countries where prisoners are treated as humans. Like, here in Finland, there are convicted murderers, who are serving their sentence and going to work or school during that. They live in prisons, but in some cases you wouldn't even know they are prisons, because they look exactly like apartment buildings.

Big 'effing deal. And religious rights are ridiculous anyway as 'a category'. Religions are just another facet of people's beliefs, same as veganism. Whatever happened to separation of church and state~? Not to mention: religious organizations and churches (wrongfully, as they are very political) DO NOT PAY TAXES, vegan organizations do~!!

Of course everyone should get human rights, medical attention and access to their lawyer. Get him his medicines. Does he have access to his lawyer. Yes he does. Does he need a computer for his defence? Possibly but I would argue the risk of letting him on the web. Plus laptops in prisons are... strongly discouraged. Risks. Vegan meals? Nice to have but I bet the prison higher priorities for the money. He may have to eat vegetables. "We should strive to provide an excellent prison system, with entirely separate remand facilities, A1 medical care and a choice of menus. So, I'm raising taxes" Good luck with that. Prison is and always has been about the budget. If you want perfect it costs.

Should you be taking SBF’s claims at face value? The vegan issue is different from the meds issue. They should both be verified independently. You are correct that It is just as important that a poor person receive proper medication and nutrition as SBF. SBF can make a claim that it is a religious thing. One part of the root cause is the retribution theory of Justice. Another is the privatization of penal systems across the USA.
