    Blowing a nitrogen blanket on top and you won't have to worry about oxygen getting to the hotspots

    So this caught on fire just from sitting? No ignition source, just the weight of the corn sitting on itself caused it to spontaneously combust?

    This one time someone in my office burnt popcorn in the microwave and set the building fire alarm off and we had to evacuate the building, a 6 story building! The fire Dept had to clear the building before we could go back in. The smell was horrible. I can't imagine what this smells like.

    I understand it's a HUGE volume, but is it possible to introduce nitrogen rich air to slow/stop the fire?

  • @johnferguson7235

    @johnferguson7235

    They would need tanker trucks full of nitrogen and the silo is vented. It could be done but it would take a long time to cool off.

    It’s possible. I’ve helped do it on a much larger scale. It was a nightmare. Problem is the grain keeps airspace down in the pile so there’s always enough oxygen to keep it smoldering

    Is that corn just garbage then, or can it be used for something? How about the bin? can it be fixed? couldn't this be prevented with temp probes or something? If that bin is 250000 bu, how much would the bigger one beside it hold?

    Fluffy Floofer Bushel, traditionally 8 dry gallons or about 35 liters, but today it is often defined by a set nominal weight for a given commodity product that approximates those volumes.

    The blurring method of separating segments is unpleasant to viewers. You can get an editing function which swipes one segment offscreen while drawing in the next scene to coincide with the exiting shot.

    A cheaper alternative: cover the entire silo with plastic, hook up some massive air pumps, and suck out the majority of the oxygen over the course of a day or so...any ember will be extinguished. Solved for 1/10 the cost of this operation....you're welcome.
