Salt & Tar: Ep.206- Under the Golden Gate
Out the gate! Rediviva's decks get wet for the first time with true ocean water. It was a sloppy ride out but so much fun! It has been 7 years in the making and this episode is the moment we cross that start line into our cruising life aboard her 🥂
p.s. I try and reply to as many comments as I can but we are still so so busy so please do not take it personally 💕

Next project: grab rails on the cabin top, with safety lines to connect your harness so you don't go overboard!

I also don’t see a throwable flotation device, could be there somewhere. They need to be wearing vests, maybe they have them on under their rain gear. The flotation gear needs a strobe too. They need to tie themselves on to the boat, especially at night !

i thought i noticed a lack of handholds.... in that mess coming out of the GG they would have been a blessing. i know i would have had my PFD on in any case though.

The charging towards the bridge and the music made for one of those epic tear-jerker moments of building towards triumph... pretty damn cool.
Look forward to a shot of your vessel under full sail….bravo to you both…

I am also looking forward to all sails video. Here's hoping a companion boat joins them and gets them some "all sails full" videos from the companion boat. (Assuming they don't have a drone to get video with, or they don't want to risk their drone if they have one.) A 360° camera atop the main mast could be cool footage too.
1Beautiful Day for you both! More hand holds please, SAFETY FIRST
From time to time George will look down and take a turn at the helm...and softly chuckle... " I told you she would sail herself...
Y'all autta consider handrails, or at least a line, on top of the cabin!

ABSOLUTELY! Life jackets would save lives too. All comes down to common sense and memories of almost drowning - confronting!
Rediviva looked like an excited puppy as she was romping through that chop. 😄 I adore the Swab updates, thanks for those!
Have watched each episode in sequence starting when you poured the keel, used to sail small boats and sailed off the coast of Maine on a schooner, and built three small boats. Believe me, I was with you in spirit on this episode! I am 82 yrs old this Fall, so along with my memories I have you, thank you!

super cool! you supplied them? beauties!
“Slocum style” love it. No one believed he could sail straight by balancing his sails and that he didn’t have to steer, but here you are, proving to the world what a full keel under balanced sails can do. I was nervous for you going into the night without an autopilot. But you’ll do just fine The tunes at 9:28 were so awesome and inspirational as you were all rolly-polly going under the GGB. The migrating birds overhead. Seeing each part of the boat doing its intended job out in the chop holding together and keeping you safe and on course, Working as one. Remembering the episode when you crafted the part and installed all those parts, like the deadeyes. What a sense of accomplishment you must be feeling. I’m so happy for you. It’s been a joy to have you share your journey with us out in YouTubia. Can’t wait to see where you’ll take us next. Remember Admiral Rickover’s plaque that he gave to JKF that held the sailor’s prayer, “O, God, thy sea is so great and my boat is so small” Carry on!
She looks like a nicely balanced ship, but it looks like some handrails on the cabin top might be in order! Congratulations! My heart was with you, having sailed a gaff headed schooner at one time in my life!
I have been watching for 3 and a half years and have watched from the very beggining and words can never say enough when all your hard work and struggles to build something like this yourselves comes to the actual reason for all the time spent....On the water. Great to see it and over the last few weeks you can tell coming from a spectator that you two have the spirit back that the project sapped from both of you. I am looking forward to future sailing and port calls! I been holding off until you guys hit the open ocean but now is the time......Congrats on all your hard work! and the hard work ahead......LOL
Thank you for the Swab update. I look forward to his KZread channel going live.
Thank you, Salt & Tar, for sharing your journey ... wishing you fair winds and following seas!
"We have ideas of what it should be, but we'll see." The definition of adventure. The definition of sailing. Tally Ho!!!!!
I can't count how many sailing vids I've watched. But this brought me pure joy. I can't imagine how joyful Ruth and Garrett must have felt. And once Rediviva was balanced and tracking on her own, Garrett's homage to Joshua Slocum was purely on point; my heart swelled. Fair winds!
Beautiful. Music pretty nice too. Wish you guys would consider grablines along the roof. 👍❤️
Life preservers and lifelines, better safe than sorry! Good luck! JIM🚩

Oh… and ❤️ by the way💯 It’s ALWAYS GREAT to 👀 🫵 and Garrett💯
I came in when you guys were about 3 months away from bringing her down to Napa, then went back and watched from the start to orient myself. This day, now in your past, will be a touchstone moment for you, one that is marked in your hearts, and, while you won't need the video to remember it forever, it will be fun for you to go back, after some time has passed, and watch this one again. Someday, you two need to consider teaching. And I don't necessarily mean boat building. Our world is such that younger people, couples just getting started on their journey together could do well to see what it takes to succeed, to set a goal and to back each other up, to always keep true to the course that begins and ends with the love that is the source of it all. Rediviva is more than a boat you two built with your own two hands, it is a tangible demonstration of what two people who love each other can accomplish. This is something all of us can find inspiration in, but not something all of us learn early enough in life. My wife and I have been together for 44 years, and I see many things in your relationship that we share in ours. I think you two, still being young enough to relate you other young folks...I think there are young couples that could use the lessons you could teach. Life is short, you are living it on your terms. While the song says "love can build a bridge", your song is 'love has built our boat" I look forward to continue to following your journey, and wish you both long life, happiness, and Godspeed.

We'll said, from a guy on his second marriage. First was 4.5 years. This one is going strong at 27 years now.
I loved it when Garret yells that he's cold, but later he's still barefoot. :)
I know that Garrett has a great sense of satisfaction with Redadiva, especially evident when he's just setting on the deck without any need to hold the tiller. But, what I found to be seriously revealing, was the smile on Ruth's face. It didn't matter where she was in this filming, she had an ear to ear smile.
Standing at the helm without any support in these conditions must be a hell of a workout!

Holy Schnikies!!! My heart is still racing. Like you said, we’re doing it. Congratulations guy’s. Anyone remember a couple of kids running around in the forest with chainsaws and a dream…. Keep dreaming because they can and do come true.
Thanks for the Swab update! Just ain't the same without him sometimes!
I'm so chuffed... I was hooting and hollering... Cheering you 2 on.... Realizing how much blood, sweat, an tears went into Red Aviva's every plank screw an nut. Every tube of sealant an every bit of everything that makes Red Aviva you both did it with your own hands . As We your followers watch you sailing in to the Horizon, after passing under the Gate of Golden bridge...! Tears just started rolling down my face.....I hope you both had an outstanding fourth an most of all a beautiful sail out to sea... I've never seen 2 so happy an stress free!! Thanks again for Sharing your lives with us. So grateful for the opportunity an wisdom an so many life lessons in building a vessel... I bid you fare winds an following sea's guy's ✌🏼💗😊❣️... DK & family P.S. Thanks for sharing Swabs new Job.. He's so loved an has a very important position to fill.. He's The Big Bro to the cutest wee man ever.... You can feel the depth of the love given an shown... This channel an you guys have truly been a lifeline of positivity... An inspiration... I Thank you both deeply for sharing your lives 💓
20:52 Alls well. Seven YEARS!! Under the GGB and alls well!!! Smooth tides and following winds. God bless you, Garret, Ruthie, and, Rediviva!!! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND INCREDIBLE!!!!!
Congratulations on hitting the ocean waves! And Forman Swab looks like he's having a great retirement. You might want to let your sister know that all old men need trimming in certain areas, like the hair between their paw pads. Helps to maintain traction on slippy floors. Provided Ol' Swab permits it of course.
Amazing! I think my heart was beating as fast as yours!! What a great boat, it is obviously a great design and you guys did an awesome job on the build! Best you tube sailing channel!!

I have so much admiration for the incredible amount of work it took,so much positive energy,so many years but why such a poor design, figure yourself it is pitch dark 45 knot wind ,and the following rolling sea is crashing on deck, DO YOU WANT TO BE SWAMPED AT THE HELM ?????What do you do ??? THIS BOAT IS SADLY A COASTAL OVERNIGHT SAILER!
"If you Build it, It will Sail" Awesome vid. Grab Rails, Throw Ring, inflatable vests? Swab rockin it out too. All is good.
Love it. There are sailing channels, there are sleek ocean going cruisers and twee catamarans, but only one calls at your heart. Fair sails Rediviva, that crew will treat you well.
After so many years ,to watch you sail out of the harbor and make that final tack to port was just amazing.not only are you both great boat builders , your great sailors too!! Fair winds ⛵️
Love that she sails balanced, one never knows until sheets are tied in the wind. Great build guys.
congradulations!!!!! happy sailing to you.... and thanks for the Swab update :)
She’s Sailing. And she’s doing it sweet as the cruiser she is. Gerr must feel satisfied. As you both must be super enthusiastic. This is amazing 🤩
So good to see you all including Cap'n Swab living your best lives, Here's to clear skies and calm water...
Rediviva is a graceful lady, congrats to the both of you🥂 May you share Manny wonderful adventures together.
It appears Swab is as happy as the two of you. No regrets. That truly is a beautiful thing.
So great you guys!! A nice bunch of tradition. Always remember “it’s not the sea that will kill you,but the stuff around the edges” fair winds and take your time learning her and yourselves.
@thomasarussellsr
Жыл бұрын
This is not an argument, but the sea can most definitely kill you. One rogue wave can take a much larger boat to Davy Jones' Locker. We wish the best for all the sailors out there, but we must honor the power of the oceans if we wish to survive them. True, the stuff around the edges can be quite deadly as well, but the waters, and winds, themselves do conspire to kill, every year. Respect is required.
The sheer joy on your faces is priceless. All your years of blood, sweat and tears into building Rediviva has come to fruition. George Buehler would be proud of what you have done. It brings me huge motivation for my Buehler Diesel Duck build. Just starting to frame. It will be a few years yet before she sees the water but someday I will be the over the moon happy boater. Congratulations
Feeding the algorithm to add to the cruising kitty. Good to see Rediviva at sea. Take care, cruise on.
the juxtaposition between the view of the city of San Francisco and you guys is night and day, I know where I would rather be... bravo and fair winds 🙂
Awesome folks. Wonder if you have thought of mounting a grab bar on the top of cabin sides to give a hand hold while walking?
Can't wait to see Red under full sail. Awesome going under the Golden gate Bridge. Well done guys.
Oh man! Another sore cheek episode. Gotta love it. Fair winds and safe harbours.

I second that (I'm a long retired occasional doco director), but I have no doubt the boat thing will work out just fine, even if only through sheer force of will!
It is amazing how much joy two people who you have never met (but hope to one day) can bring into your life with one simple video. That was truly exciting. Nice to see a swab update.
Garrett and Ruth, A flyover before the big event with fireworks when you round the point; what a reward. Thank you for sharing. Blue Skies, Fair Winds, and Following Seas. Cheers! Faithfully, James
I'm smiling for you two. Big grin type smile
So pleased to see a happy Swab 🙂. Ruthie, PLEASE get Garret to fit a life-line for you to clip onto when you go forward. You have no handrails on your cabin roof and very low bulwarks, you prefer not to wear vests, but turning your beautiful boat around for a 'quick' rescue might not be the easiest/quickest thing? - so drop sails/stop engine and use your dinghy (with a 'grab-bag') for recovery? - Or prevent that scenario by using lifelines??? Many thanks for your uploads, I love Thursdays 😊 edit - Off to watch that last couple of minutes again 😊
Rediviva going under the Golden Gate bridge was amazing. I saw how pumped you guys were ! Very powerful emotionally ! Congratulations ! May you have safe and wondrous journeys !
Out of the bay. Glad to see this day finally happen!
What a great start to a life long adventure. Rediviva is absolutely gorgeous. What a true sailing vessel. I am speechless!!
Why do I always get so emotional watching your videos? I am just so happy for all three of you!!!
Well done to all boatwrights! A well spent 7 years. Now, happy adventuring, sailors.
You’ve broken free !!!!! Best feeling ever ! I’d love to know some of your speed numbers in a future episode. She looks smooooth !!!!!!

Glad to get the Swab update. I know it must have been hard, but clearly it was a good call.
Good to see swab frisking and guarding his new fam. Hard to do but it was the right choice.
What a lovely way to christian "Rediviva" to life on the ocean of the world!! I loved how, try as she might Ruth could not keep the smile off of her face or out of her voice.. Glad that Swab as fond a home where he is loved as much as you both loved him, your nephew will keep him young for years to come. Hoping your first night at sea is all you had hoped for. Take care, be safe and sail on.
That had to be one of the best feelings you’ve experienced! Under the Golden Gate, a beautiful Sun show below the light, wind in your sails on your maiden voyage. I’m so happy for you two.
Thank you for showing foreman Swab. I missed him too
Those were some big smiles on you guys! Happy sailing :)
woohoo past the Golden into the sunset, exciting!
Living vicariously nothing like it in the world. I have no other option. As the camera move across the boat, then back to front, then up to the sails, I see a board, a rope lashed, port hole..and I too remember each of these being placed. I view you now in the west coast ocean, a family in northern Vermont, another in West Virginia, and a racing family in Florida. I am in Arizona, southern boarder 50 mile away from Mexico. I wake up each morning looking forward to see each of you and I am happy to be part of these adventures each of you are experiencing and allowing me along. This video captured an emotional time I was not expecting...thank you for the ride...!
Wow... your boat is passing every test with flying colours. Congrats, and wow for Swab too, lucky fellow to be so loved and cared for.
Only been watching you for a few years, always an inspiration to see your hard work, but you've made a work of art and are a living embodiment of the best of the American Dream.
Have been watching for so many years, this episode put tears in my eyes. Congrats!
How special to get that salty spray on her decks! Good job to get her that balanced on the helm. Glad to see your "child" has settled into his new role as guardian protector of his peeps!
Going under the Golden Gate always impresses me. Then you hit those big swells.
Rough as hell conditions.... windy, wet, and rolly.... but I bet your faces hurt after all that smiling... Bravo Zulu, you two...
Way to go. We are weeks away from selling our home and fulltiming in our 35E motorhome. We're both over 70 and this video is the inspiration we needed. Awesome! Thank you.
Exhilarating! It's like a newborn birth and baptism passing through the Golden Gates - a salty grace indeed. It's just amazing seeing you setting sail for wherever the seas may take you! Cheers to you and Swab!
Your smiles say it all. Congrats guys!
I'm so excited for you and your dream boat that I am commenting just after you raised anchor ...DOOO DAHHH !!
You built that boat, every piece of wood, screw, nut and bolt, and hers you are taking her out to sea, you should be the most proudest of all the the proud people, bad grammar but you get the point. What an amazing achievement
love you two, congratulations on the start of the quest, bon voyage!
Good to see Swab enjoying retirement. Enjoy your maiden voyage!
It’s best 7 years of life. Well lived and moving forward with the wind.
