Salt & Tar: Ep.204- Spaulding Marine Center

A huge thank you to Spaulding Marine Center and to Heather for setting it up! This place was an amazing spot to visit. You can visit by foot too!
(Spaulding Marine Center & Store, 600 Gate 5 Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965)
We loved getting the opportunity to step aboard the oldest sailing vessel on the United States West Coast, FREDA. If you're interested look up the massive rebuild effort. The photos of the amount they had to take away and rebuild is mind blowing. You can also sail her: www.spauldingcenter.org/freda/
If you want to get involved and volunteer at the center they are always getting their hands into some very interesting projects:

Just curious:

My wife and I did a sunset cruise with Capt Heather a few years ago. It was awesome. My wife, who is also very petite, was so impressed with her. I credit Heather with getting my wife enthused about sailing, which was my ulterior motive. Now we sail a Yankee Dolphin 24 and I'm restoring a 1960 Pearson Triton (built in Sausalito) that we hope to sail to Baja and beyond in a few years! Thanks, Heather!

The best thing about Ruth is she has been on board with building a boat from ground up and in water. Even when Garret was building and Ruth was working a job and editing videos, she stuck with the plan. Garrett is one lucky man to have her.

As an old guy with a very messed up back, Garret, when I say I feel your pain, I mean it. Last time I had to work on a sink and lie on my back all twisted up like you were, I was pretty much in the same boat. Help, no. yes. no. maybe. You are both Bad-Asses. Your boat kicks ass big time.

Freda looks fantastic. I'm a wooden boat person here in Melbourne Australia and have 2 wooden boats of my own and as Heather was saying .. most of my learning was hands-on over the years. What Heather was talking about sounds fantastic for the young kids. Those pelicans look very much similar to a Mirror Dinghy we use here in Australia for kids and learning how to make a boat and sail it... I also have a back problem and can relate to the pain and difficulties that Garrett has. Ruth is a badass and very much a great asset to you Garrett.

When I was young (1960's) there was a method of learning boat building, but it was unknown down south where I grew up. I didn't discover this until I was well into my 40's. By then, it was too late. Now, in my late 50's, I've thought about going to Mystic and taking some courses, though feel I'd not be able to pull off a build by the end of my life. I like the Ketch rig.

I replaced my propane system with a pressurized Denatured Alcohol system. One thing that I did noticed is that you're missing the redline that goes over your propane line to the stove. It's a piece of fire retardant hose usually 3' in length that fits over the propane line. This protects the line and shields it if your stove catches fire. You can normally find it at fisheries, West Marine, or Amazon.

Well Garrett as soon as I saw the kid's and sharing what you've done over the last seven years or so, I got a bit teary eyed to be honest with you. It don't get no better than this Garrett to be able to spark a fire in those kids and leave a lasting impression upon them. who knows just might inspire them to do what you and Ruth have done. That's so cool. Seeing this just gives me huge respect to you even more so. You really are stepping in your calling right there. like I said, I'm getting teary eyed again as I type this out. congrats so proud of you two. I hear you, just lost my right leg fixing a roof the other day.. Now, you need to hear this: If the weed treatment sounds too drastic, try virgin or extra virgin hemp seed oil. Basic salad dressing oil, but it needs to be cold pressed to keep the ingredients intact. Very low thc and cbd content with vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. So guaranteed none of the "psychedelia" but just enough to relieve the muscles. A gulp a day got me thru last winter. When it starts to take effect, you need to gently wiggle it to re position the parts that are out of whack.

Ruth - when docking, get the bow line on loose, and then get the stern line on loose, take the boat hook with u when you jump ashore - quick - it’s important to secure both then adjust, if it’s blowing - very critical

For the couch sailors out there, that was a lesson in patience and boat control. Our Saturna 33 does pretty well with not much headway, as far as steerage goes, but it's always a bit of a dance to get the speed "just right" Well done!

Great episode. It's funny how every time a woman tells me she can do anything a man can do I cringe. However any woman that doesn't say shit, just jumps in and does... THAT'S a real woman. Often a woman that can do many things that I can't. Everyone has different skills. However someone that just does what needs doing and helps where they can is a wonderful partner, and I have seen these two doing just that. Help each other. It's why I still watch every video, even after giving up on my sailboat dream. The love that shines through almost constantly is wonderful. 😎

Ive been down that road with back problems. Ended up with 2 major & 1 minor back surgery. I tried to work thru it, tried therapy, etc, etc. Finally had to bite the bullet and get it done. Best thing I ever did, however, it did keep me out for a bit.....

As a newer subscriber, who has broken his back twice, I want to encourage Garret to consult with a professional as soon as possible. Early intervention can definitely prevent a lot of pain in your future. Best wishes!

I wonder if you two really understand how rare it is to find someone you can spend your time with and truely enjoy it. I get it - KZread only shows the good side :) and I'm sure there are bad times, but you can clearly see how compatible you guys are and how well you do together. It really is great to watch your videos :) Thanks for sharing! I Say - if you want to test a relationship, build a boat from the ground up - if you are together afterward? I think you are pretty safe lol

Quality darts guys 👏👏👏👏. Look after that back though, it’s the only one you got. Build in some stretching and strengthening exercises-sorted my bulging disc out, but I listen to my L2 when she whispers to me and I’m running cycling sailing and scuba diving no problems 👍👍. I’m sure you’ll have fun with Ruth doing the exercises 👏👏👏. Loved watching you build Red Aviva and really loving the sailing adventure 👍👍👍

Garrett for what it’s worth. I used to suffer from lower back pain I found stretching my legs relieved 85% of the issue I know the back is very complicated with bulging discs and pinched nerves but the stretching advice I received from an older friend helped a lot. Glut and thigh stretches help alot

I love seeing the way Ruth "lights up" when she gets on the tools. Look after that back mate it is no fun when you get to my age and can't do the stuff your brain is itching to tackle. Cheers Eric

Inspired me to visit Spaulding Boatworks. My dad ordered plans and a kit San Francisco Pelican and had it built Hawaii around 1965. I learned how to sail in it. It was hull number 222. If you’re ever in Santa Cruz or Moss Landing would be great to meet you both.
