Salt & Tar: Ep.229- Bahia Tortugas

Our longest leg to date onboard Rediviva. Two days to get to Turtle Bay from San Quintin and we were able to sail a decent chunk of it! We had a great weather window and needing to time the passage of Canal de Dewey during daylight to see fishing pots meant we could chill at 3 knots around Isla Cedros. It was a needed change in events to boost our spirits. Garrett never did get much sleep underway but we had some good restful nights once we made it into port. I’m pretty sure I died a little on deck after we set the hook and before lowering the dinghy and I got some sleep! It was a great test of our team work and fortitude. I’m excited to do more overnight passages…just maybe after some real rest. Leaving San Quintin the way we did, at an emotional low, wasn’t the best start to a long trip but we got through it. We did satisfy some cravings after getting into Turtle Bay and were stoked to hang out with fellow cruisers. It really helps you forget the stress of a challenge and prepare you to do it again!
Thanks for watching!
--Some of you might recognize former crew of Delos, Brady and Blue, now Captain and First Mate of Lintika and owners of Cruiser’s Academy. What a surprise to meet people that have inspired us to share and unknowingly gave us encouragement in the roughest of the building process of Rediviva. A reminder once sailing again life is going to be SO good and here we are living it. --

    Maybe its double jointed and blew itself? I had the same question, they don't just wear out or corrode away. Looked like a fifteen amp fuse, should handle most ignition related draws.

  • @hankcohen3419

    @hankcohen3419

    Completely agree with this. Fuses don’t blow for no reason and the worst way to “fix” it is to put in a higher value fuse. I suspect a loose or exposed wire leading to an intermittent short. The rough weather might have shaken something loose. If that’s so it’s likely to fail again at the worst possible time. When you get the chance you should trace the blown circuit looking for loose or exposed wires.

  • @Raysnature

    @Raysnature

    Жыл бұрын

    I completely agree the cause needs to be chased down. It's probably going to be quite hard to find as it's intermittent at the moment but better than finding it the hard way with a fire. One thing though; if run close to their rating for sufficient time or when in a cct subject to a high duty cycle they do wear out, it's a phenomenon called fuse fatigue. This is why the cable should be over specified for the load and, if subject to a high duty cycle, appropriate fuses used.

  • @hankcohen3419

    @hankcohen3419

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Raysnature Good point but wouldn't fuse fatigue be more a matter of years? I'd have to go back and see when they first started using the engine but I think it's less than a year. Also rather than just a matter of time it would be a matter of how many times you started the engine. Well under 100 I'm guessing.

  • @Raysnature

    @Raysnature

    Жыл бұрын

    @@hankcohen3419 Completely agree. I was going to caveat my original reply with 'probably not what's going on here' but left it off. Doh. I would be interested to see how much current the cct is drawing though. Can't see the fuse well enough to be sure but it does look like an overload type blow rather than a dead short. The way a fuse blows can be a useful diagnostic.

    What a great place to rest up for more adventures. During my time in Mexico, I found that many of the large restaurants in tourist areas tended to adjust their menus to a more foreign taste. The little restaurants on the streets back from the more crowded tourist areas were the best place to get fabulous tacos, gorditas and sometimes fantastic tamales. Thank you for sharing your adventure, take care and have a great week ahead.

    A couple of things that may help : watch keeping and anchoring. On the seagoing tugs Ive worked on , we kept a 2 watch system , 6hours on ,6 hrs off 24/7. Waking up at the same time everyday is less fatiguing than the rotating schedules. Usually what happens is you get a “big “ sleep your morning 5 1/2 hrs . In your afternoon a 3+ nap. The longest I’ve done is 12 weeks straight. Fatigue is dangerous and can kill you. Anchoring: perhaps a buoy with a retrieving line would help in the future. Also think about using a snubber bridle from the Samson post out each side and well past the bob stay then attached to the rode. The full furry of a hurricane would be against the hull which is thickest at the bow rather than an unsupported roller in a few inches of critical rig. Keep up the adventure.

    For times when sleep is necessary but elusive I find self hypnosis very useful ! It's a steady slow process of relaxation employing slow breathing and steady metered repetition of a few calming words which works every time, don't speak out loud just in your mind. I start by finding a comfortable position on my back with legs together, elbows tucked in and hands across my chest then take some slow deep breaths and begin with "Toes, toes it's time to sleep, time to relax, go to sleep". Repeat slowly 2 or 3 times then do it again with feet, and again with ankles, then calves, knees, thighs etc. Slowly working up through the body until you get to your back then switch to chest then go to fingers, hands,wrists etc up through shoulders neck, face and head. There is no rush, slow and steady is best, concentrate on one area at a time and put everything else out of your mind, don't even think of which part comes next, it is all about the here and now and being comfortable enough to get rest. This is an exercise in patience and intended to calm the body and mind and prepare for peaceful rest, when you start it may be beneficial to go very slow and repeat the phrase many times while concentrating on one small area like the feet, if you do this right you will begin to feel your feet actually responding and tingling warmly, as you continue up your legs they will begin to tingle too until your whole body feels like it is glowing. That's when I roll into a comfortable position and find the best sleep ever ! If you don't get it right first time start again, practice makes perfect and it gets easier the more you do it.

    Thank you for a great video, for sharing your thoughts and troubles (and not only pretty faces/places): as a sail boat owner my self (not my first one..), how I agree that after having some rather tough troubles, one jumps to the conclusion that the next trouble is a BIG one...... After encountering some troubles on mine, I nearly sold her recently (as in last week "recently"). The survey (ordered and paid for by the would be buyer) came back with very very minor repairs to be done and other wise a sailboat in prestine condition and very well built and engineered (according to the surveyor who stayed two days aboard+ haul out for inspection + sea trial). When time came to close the boat after following the surveyor in and out aboard "Tangwen", I was a bit sad to basically hand over the keys.... after a week thinking it over, the woud be buyer renounced, broke the purchase agreement and I think I might keep her after all. Once you know your boat (and you obviously know yours more than many), comes a time when confidence settles in but it does take some time........ thank you again fo sharing your experience

    Settling in through some sort of crisis - It's been like that for me every single time my life changed in some more or less significant way. Guess, your change was that you are now definitely off US soil and also not going to get more help from family. Congratulations for having finally arrived in your dream life.

    I have to admit, I was getting ready to bail on the channel as you started sailing and not building. I am glad I didn't. I am more interested than ever, and can't wait for the next video. Thank you for sharing your genuine selves and awesome experiences with us all.

    Its looking like a wise step would be to find times to add more skill to Ruths 'can do-skill list' even if this means finding months on end when every chance possible, Ruth adds to her repertory..up the mast, underneath the bost..setting and sailing off anchor, repairs & calculating navigation. Likely the skipper will find his sleep coming easier to find if there existed greater faith in crew being highly confident.

    I just watched "Transporter 2". At the beginning of the movie, it looks like your boat in the bay as he drives across the bridge.
