Sally in the garden - Clawhammer banjo tune
Sally in the garden! This is one of my favorite banjo tunes that I've learned. The melancholy mood of the song matches the mood I was in when I played it here; cold and wet and in desperate need of coffee. Fortunately it didn't take too many tries to get a decent recording, and we were in a warm car driving through for coffee in no time. Big thanks to Dad the camera operator, Mom the car driver, and Freddy, the intrepid umbrella manager. We filmed this at the very cool and somewhat spooky abandoned L A zoo in Griffith park, it was quite the adventure.
Banjo is in C tuning

July 3rd 2024 Wednesday. I am back to hear this really Superb melody..😊😊😊😊 Thankyou again Phoebe sanders..
This, by far, is my favorite video of yours. I felt a longing, a moment...a long ago, and yet familiar memory...I relate to this very person in that moment that you are Phoebe. I know too how this feels.. many never will. I see a lot of very strange comments, and I'm sorry for that, but I understand you perfectly...Thank you...🙏⚘️💐✝️🇺🇸🌹
This is exactly how I play in my mind & heart ❤️ Now I have to train my hands and ears to do the same 😊😊😊
STILL, in 2024, one of the most underrated banjo folk this side of the Mississippi.

and she plays it so well!!
This tune is traditional Appalachian music, with all the gothic. And grotesque features of a Flannery O’Connor short story. One verse is “sally in the garden, sally in the garden, siftin’ sand, siftin sand; sister’s upstairs with the hog-eyed man.” Phoebe’s playing captures the essence of mountain life in this one tune. She is a treasure.
My favourite! Such an exotic sound!
Yes, really great memorizing tune. Reminds me of a Clint Eastwood movie..😊😊 This is the best stuff by Phoebe sanders, the great banjoists..😊😊😊😊 I want to play in a similar fashion.. This song is the speed I just love to hear in my ears. I can only pray to be able to duplicate Phoebe,s playing skills & speed right.. Ya got to love Phoebe sanders...😊😊😊
Sounds medieval, some Eastern flavor there too. I've heard the Sitar and Banjo are distant cousins.
Oh, I love this one. Great playing.
I love the rain and water sounds in the background!
Rain is the perfect percussion for this piece. Sounds great!
This is the best version of this song I've heard, converted me from wanting to play 3 finger to clawhammer
my favorite
Amazing. This is the banjo music I love. Very effective use of space.
Wonderful moody tune and well played Phoebe. I think slow pieces are often more difficult than fast ones, because you've got to nail that feeling.
0:27 you are flowing through the raindrops like oxygen
0:14 already your perceptual nuance with the rain is literally a miraculous gift wow
That is a new one for me. Got to play the vid 50 times now to get it doen...
Its sounds good exspecially with the rain in the background
So relaxing and beautiful this Phoebe, I’m currently learning this and it’s such a great tune to play
WOW STONE face. sqwirk and a smile.. one of your best vids. wow
Absolutely beautiful! And slowing it to 75% speed increases the poignancy - for me, anyway.
Great song, sounds like the clouds played background harmony. Thank you.
Mesmerizing! Reminds me a little of some medieval pieces written for lute.
Hypnotic and magical, Phoebe, thanks for sharing💐🪕
Oh wonderful!❤
Never stop making videos friend, your playing is so beautiful and inspiring! ❤
Sweet
Wow! I really liked this video! I've seen all your videos so far but i really loved this the most ... so far. For me it feels and seams your are much more into playing instead of focusing on other things like the camera and the "audience" an such. It feels so much more atmospherical in this. Loved it! Keep up the vibe! 🙂 Greetings from Germany Ben
Thank you Phoebe. This was the perfect tune to listen to as I watched the dawn break on this rainy morning. I can have my tea now. Cheers
❤❤❤❤
Just want to say thank you. This song is awesome, and thanks to this video, the clarity of your left hand positioning, the tuning notes in the description, and the ability to slow down the playback speed, I've just learned my first banjo tune. Now I just gotta practice and try to make it smooth all the way through!

I'm just starting banjo and am inspired to learn this tune! Eventually 😊. Did you learn from the banjo hangout tabs? How do you usually learn new stuff?

Thank you!! I learn most of my tunes by ear from my banjo teacher, and I also pick up things by ear on my own. I'm pretty bad at reading music but I hope to figure out how to read banjo tabs soon.

@@phoebesanders2487 Thanks. I'm doing the on-line clawhammer course from Kathy Fink. Seems pretty good, but not in person so I have to figure out mistakes on my own.
Also one of my favorites to play!

Holy Moley! This brings back memories of the golden years. Great job Phoebe!
this is so badass
Great job, as always! I like that tune. It's got a sort of mournful hope to it. I also like it when you play in the rain.
what a fine tune, I have to learn that one some day. Sound lovely when you play it.
Nice! Your playing is amazing.
Sounding great Phoebe!
Beautifully played ! Subscribed :-)
Always love it when I find new motivation as well as something to listen to while driving down the road. New subscriber.
Thanks for sharing another "your style" banjo video.

Very very nice Phoebe. I love this tune..Jack Baker NYC/NJ
New tune to me, and I like it. Kind of dark. Good job, thanks.
Awesome
Last soldier of the fortress!
Nice job. The stone wall is a dandy, too.
The algorithm has chosen you my friend and it’s well deserved. For some reason this reminds me of fallout 76
Very nice
I see you have talent God bless you
Lovely rendition, you play this one with such heart and feeling , I am working on a simpler version myself, one of my favorite tunes.
Sure is something special alright, nice impro and the rain adds that melancholy touch. After coffee it would have sounded less melancholic, but more....caffeinated!......maybe.
This song made me want to learn how to play the banjo.
Thanks, Phoebe and crew!
Замечательно! 👍🏻
And love your drop thumbing:)
Hawa!
Nice job
1:06 water is older than the sun I can see 1000,000,000 years ago & the future of this formless form by hearing it
exelenyt viodoe!!!!
Phoebe did it again!
Lovely. I could tell you were in CA because of the rain jacket. Stay warm and dry.
Very nice and cool location! Might sound kinda weird, but reminds me of the Iron Maiden song Dance of Death.
🙂
