Love your work. I have a job offer with a company I have good history with. I shared a few ideas, and while my employer is interested, they said they don't know the right figure or range for my role or proposition. So, i sat in for a week, and revised my plan, did a bit of work to backup my claims (risks are still involved but it looks promising) and searched the market to quote the right range, and your video helped me a lot Wishing you well!

Thank you very much - that was really really good - it helped me put a better perspective in my view of how I can be valued in a role before accepting a job. While I am considering another role, I now can be more open to negotiate a starter salary with a higher salary as I become more confident in the role after say 6 months or so; thus bringing in more value and therefore expecting more in return.
This was eye opening experience for me. Thank you.

Great Video! I was wanting some advice from you. What would you do if you get a 2nd interview and they ask you again about your salary expectation? Some context: This employer asked me in the first interview what my SE was. I replied, "I reviewed the post and saw there was a range on there so I would expect something close to that" of course that is not verbatim. I think there will 3 rounds of interviews so how would I go about this again?
Hi Bill, I hope you are doing well. This is extremely insightful and timely. Thank you. I have a question though; what if you are being interviewed for a higher or another position in the same company that you work for? How should the negotiations go as the recruiters might very well know how much you earned in your previous role? Thank you, and enjoy your weekend.
@duncancamilleri8614

that's an interesting question - in my opinion, my argument of that would be that the previous role has absolutely no relevance on the new role in much the same way. Like in the video, one can look at the average salary and make a decision based on the candidates worth (experience) in that skill.
Super helpful!

Man, you are awesome!
Bill, what about when they put the range salary for the position? For example "75 to 90k/year".. How can I get close to the top?
I stepped up from Foreman to manager after my former boss left suddenly. I have approached them multiple times to address the change in responsibilities. The company I work for only does a performance review every year and I had only been in the new position for a few weeks when they did this evaluation. I feel I should have received a better raise based off my performance in my old position. But did got rated a much lower performance at my new position.
Hi Bill. Firstly. I'd like to pass along my thanks to you, as a fellow Canadian, for creating these videos. Your explanations and simple to follow examples make these very intuitive and you obviously have an excellent way of communicating. Quick question - Hope this is not a stupid question; If one receives a written job offer to a job that the prospective employer has provided a salary range from the start and no salary questions were asked for the purposes of negotiation, is it too risky to ask for the maximum + X% and use that to achieve the max, or more? (To add some context, on the day I had an interview the response to "What are the next steps?" was "We have other candidates to interview and you should hear back from HR in about 10 days" however I received an email on the SAME EVENING as the interview from HR saying I was the preferred candidate and was moving to the reference stage). Thank you kindly, Eh! :)

You can write it in a comment - a NEW comment. Not a reply to a comment - I usually don't see those.
Small question here, is there more leisure for the applicant if he has been accepted but has postponed the salary negotiation? As this signifies that the company thinks that the person is the adequate applicant, and, thus is willing to pay up to 100? It's a personal question as this is the situation I face right now. Thank you
kindly advise on ; desired qualifications vs essentail qualifications. Do they normally eliminate candidates with no desired qualifications (that can be attained later)?
Ur Awesome man😎…Got hired in biggest investment bank
Great video! Really appreciate your insight. One thing I will love to ask your opinion on is the current (privileged) position I’m in - I was offered a salary that exceeds my expectations and assessment of market salary. Is negotiating worth trying for the sake of a slight improvement in pay (and demonstrating my negotiation skills)? Or in this case, is it preferable to just take it and look for potential bonuses and promotions in the future for an improved pay? Thanks!

Doesn't hurt to try for a small bump. But, if they push back hard, I wouldn't persist.
thank you !!!!
Thanks Sir. Best me luck
I have a meeting with an HR rep for a position I was offered. The only issue is I have already discussed the roles and responsibilities for the position I’m being hired for. Does it make sense to ask for a title change? (It’s a field tech position, but they want me to take on the responsibilities of a project manager)
A job advt mentioned the roles of that particular position. During the interview, they may say that the required details have already been given. How to address such situations?
@thecompaniesexpert Not sure if you reply to old videos but I wondered how many times should you go back and forth with these negotiations, and at their second or third offer and you’re still not satisfied could you then ask for other perks like a sign-on bonus or another weeks paid vacation, etc? Thanks. Love your videos!

It varies. But, that's all within the realm of possibility - there are no hard limits.
When I was asked this question last week I said "about 20% more than my current salary." To which the hiring manager said "Okay, that's fine, I'll look at the budget". The interview went really well and before that him and his team kept telling me I was a great fit for the company before that. Still waiting to hear back but nervous not sure if that was a no. I wished I'd asked the range first but totally forgot to. It's only been 4 days.

Excellent video. I wished I had watched it before a Headhunter reached out to me. I revealed my current salary, and I also was "forced" to fill a form with a salary expectation. The recruiter in the first interview said that I was asking too much (30% more than I'm making) and politely "offered me" feedback that I shouldn't ask more than 20%, because it is unusual in the Market. I argued that I asked for that money because it is the average salary of that position (a higher than my current one), but he said that the company was working with no more than 20% of my current salary. As I'm very interested in this new position, I agreed to adjust my salary expectation. I'm now one of the finalists. Do you think that it is still possible to negotiate a small bump? I would be happy to receive a job offer higher than 25%. Anyway, I'll take the offer, but if I get this, even better. Regards, Alex!
Hi, if an offer is orally communicated from a HR person with a low end pay range. Is this still ok to negotiate with a counter offer? Thank you for this video, I now know how to answer the salary expectation question!
YOU ARE AWESOME
Remember to try and watch, process and learn this NOT 1hour BEFORE you have to negotiate a salary 😂 Thanks to all of your awesome advice I manage to get 3 offers… I made sure to get one offer accepted 100% first before turning down the others. The job pays more than I have ever had in my entire life. Also, negotiated and was able to get like 20% more than what I wanted. I owe you a lot. Thanks so much 😊

Hi Bill. Thanks so much for all your videos. In order to ask for a small increase once you get the offer, do you really need to have it in written? Is it not ok if they would call you and offer you the job, then you say I will give you an answer tomorrow, then the next day you tell them everything good but before you send me the offer letter, could you pls consider to raise my fixed salary by a 5%? Otherwise it would seem a bit bizarre that you would accept one salary on the phone and then change your mind once you have received a written confirmation,
hi, thanks for the great content. Can you say that you want the same salary as on your previous job? or is that not a good idea?

Depends on the situation, but it can certainly be appropriate.
i just had my stage 2 interviews with 2 firms and my current firm wants me to make them an offer to stay on board .. this video was very useful. now if only someone would tell me the exact correct number to ask for and/or accept! why must things be so difficult.
I did research their exact same associate role at the x company (new grad) for paying me 70k for example, and I put it down the exact number. Will I get eliminated?
Smart!

Not necessarily - you can ask for whatever you want. They can refuse anything they want.
At my current job when I first got and offered ask for more but was told no because they didn't want to pay me more than the current employee. Although I know I had more experience and an education in my field. I went ahead and accepted. Now I get a yearly 3% raise, but I feel like don't feel like they value me. What can I do now? I have to be at work by 0630 and I'm done by 3pm. I rarely get called in when on call, so I get a rate of 1.25 an hour only unless I get called in then I get time and 1/2 minimum 2 hrs. I am on call every other week so and have to respond to emergency calls with in 30 mins. Is there anything you recommend I can do to try and get a higher rate now my time is valuable with my family but cannot do anything with them 2 weekends of a month or more because its only me and another employee.
Can I negotiate if am going to work from the same company but different division?
Oh, just what I needed!

In California, it’s illegal for an employer to ask about your prior or current salary
Wouldn’t be easier, and much more sincere, to include the position’s salary in the job posting? That way only interested candidates would apply and nobody has to put a number when filling the application…
@ALCRAN2010

There seems to be a new law for Colorado to do just that. Many job postings relating to CO applicants and remote work from the state of CO have these salary ranges listed.
I was 🤔 thinking about what you said in the End about Value and Pricing. There is a story I heard long time ago about Henry Ford ( called the Henry Ford Story) ! Henry Ford just retired his Best Engineer and the plant shut down 👇 He was loosing a hundred thousand dollars a day and decided to bring back his retired engineer to solve the problem . So the engineer came back out of retirement to contract out his Time and looked at one of the three Generators! He took a Piece of Chalk out of his pocket and drew an X on one of the Generators ! He said the ( Engineer) YOUR PROBLEM IS 👉 RIGHT HERE! The new hired engineers looked inside the generator and got the plant back into operation in one hour! So Henry Ford asked the Retired Engineers to send the Bill in the mail and the Engineer replied. back by mail ..... A MILLION DOLLARS!!! So Henry Ford called him 👆 up and asked..... why so much??? Retired Engineer says... ONE DOLLAR FOR THE CHALK AND 999 Thousand Dollars for my Time
@olgai

... and 999K for my knowledge on where to draw the X 😀
In my opinion the problem is people (usually HR) making decisions about hiring for a position that they most likely know nothing about. So all your points about your car analogy is valid for other side. Maybe if they didn't try to eleminate based on a relatively low impact figure such as amount, the company will also lose on the Ferrari because the perfect candidate was asking for higher number and then they will just end up choosing the guy which maybe taking a lower amount but at the end not best candidate

It happens all the time... People in jobs they can't do efficiently
When they ask what is your current salary, I almost act like I didn't hear them and I let them know my range instead. It's funny because it works and they don't ask. They then just assume my current salary is in that range. It's not technically lying but it's smart.
Billllllllll, where have you been all my (career) life?! 😅 Imagine learning about this while in college.
I feel every student should have that kind of course before getting their degree. Succeeding in job interviews is a skill that can be acquired by taking a course of this type.
Great video! I just got a job offer letter! Based on what you said, seems like if I want to ask for a little more money, I should say "Thank you for this offer. While I appreciate it, I feel I have to ask for X amount. Please let me know your thoughts" Would that work? 😊

Hi King. Well, that's going to depend on a) if you even want to risk asking for more (all bluffs must risk being called) b) what you're going to agree to in return, and c) if they can meet your request. Assuming all that is fine, I would say something along the lines of "I need X". To me, your phrasing sounds too much like it's an arbitrary reach.

Question: I resigned, serving my notice period now. The company asked me how much I want to stay. I gave them a lowball answer that is still higher than my current salary, but much lower than the offers I was getting, because I did not have any official job offer at the time. The company hasn't given me any confirmation yet. Now I have an official offer which is 60% higher than my lowball ask. How to approach this with my current company/boss who is expecting me to stay back if they meet my expectations?

in my first interview they told me what the job pays...plus they said medical benefits 100% paid if just me (which it is)...im losing 2 weeks vacation (currently have 4)...losing 7 sick days...and 2 holidays...would it be reasonable to ask for more money to compensate for the 19 days im losing?

forgot to mention..had 2nd interview...first was just hr going over a few items then a few days later (which was yesterday) they had me talk to a supe...no mention of pay...just job stuff...next step...hr will call and offer job if...this is the point when i should start the pay negotiation with what i mentioned above?
Got an offer and I see the company is using cost plus technique for the offer. They basically took my payslip and worked out a low increment. It is disappointing but I am busy in negotiations. I know what my skills and experience are worth and I would rather decline this opportunity than accept a sub par offer.
Next weeek I will interview with some company. Wish me luck and get offer!
