Sako 85: Brilliant!

Спорт

The Sako 85, or Black Bear, is an excellent rifle from Finland and definitely lives up to its positive reviews. I have received many requests to review this rifle and I finally have a great video for you! I hope you enjoy it. / usog

Very nice! I own three Sakos myself. The 85 Grizzly in .30-06, the 85 Hunter in .223 Rem, and the Quad Varmint in .22 lr, and I'm in love with all of them. Sako 85 is a no-brainer for me when it comes to bolt rifles. I want to buy european, and I don't want a manual cocking system, like on the Blaser R8, Merkel RX Helix or Sauer 404. So the reasons I go for Sako 85 are as follows: No plastic parts. The custom action length. The brilliant magazine, with extra release safety, and the ability to top-feed as well. Very smooth bolt slide. The ability to chamber/unchamber rounds with the safety on. The controlled cartridge feed. The list goes on... And yes, the rifles are a bit expensive, but they look amazing and the feeling of quality is well worth the price.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Haha, thanks. Maybe they should. It has taken much of my hard earned savings over the last 6-7 years. ;) I use my Grizzly for deer hunting, and some days I actually regret not buying the Black Bear instead, or one of the other synthetic or stainless models. The Grizzly's beautiful stock needs a bit of love after a whole weekend in rain or snowfall. I'm sure your Sako will serve you well. How is the market for Sako and other european rifles over there in America? Do you see a lot of them? I live in Norway, and I believe the #1 selling rifle here is the Tikka T3. I also see lots of Blaser R93, Sauer 202, Browning X-bolt, and a bit of Sakos at the range. Shooters and hunters from say, age 50 or more, often have some good old, well-used Remingtons or Winchesters. Also, lots of people still use their Mausers, left behind by the germans after the war, that were re-chambered to .30-06 Sprg. Those guns last a lifetime or two, as you know. Anyway, I just recently discovered your channel. I really like your videos, they're good and informative. It looks like you really know your guns.

I've traveled around the states and Canada and most people I've met didn't even try to say it right. Don't sweat the nomenclature. It's a bit pedantic for people to be overly sensitive about it anyway. The military loves the nomenclature nazis.. I suppose it builds strong bones or character? I know someone that has owned, repaired them (as a gunsmith) his entire life and he pronounces it SAY-KO, both long vowels. I suppose in Finnish it could be different. As a viewer I love your videos, they have a unique niche that only you are filling. You have opened my eyes to guns I would have never considered. Thank you!

They certainly have some very pretty guns in that Bear Series of theirs. Also, it is a breath of fresh air to see so many iron sights on standard production rifles from a manufacturer. When it comes to nomenclature so long as people understand what is being discussed that is what is important. Unfortunately there are people who would rather argue about the perfect use of terms such as clip or magazine, and that can drive people away from gun ownership. Anyway, thank you and your team for another great video.

I own a 85 Classic in 308 win and a 85 Blackbear in 9,3x62. The 308 has a Kahles Helia 2-10x50 on top and the 9,3x62 a Kahles K16i. Great reliable and ultra accurate rifles. I use the 308 for stalking and the 9,3x62 for driven hunts. I gues the 85 is more “Tikka” like than the older models, and theres not quite the same soul in the making. But it’s a deadly accurate tool. I’ve never had more accurate rifles than these two 85’s, and the double stack magazines and overall functionality is just superb. I Will never go back to either Sauer or Blaser. Greetings from Denmark

Another nicely done review. Your efforts are always appreciated. I own the same model in .308 topped with a Kahles 3.5-10x multi-zero scope in Sako rings. The rifle also worked great with the sturdy Recknagel iron sights Sako supplied. Since I often get the opportunity for shots longer than my ability with iron sights, the scope helps in cleanly harvesting game with much better bullet placement. Those who put down the stock or say the barrel is too short miss the whole point of this being an all-weather hunting tool. The numerous game animals I’ve taken with a single shot from my Sako Black Bear certainly haven’t complained that the bullet’s velocity and energy were a bit less than they might have been out of a longer barrel. This rifle was not meant for the battlefield. It was crafted specifically for hunting and its size makes it a great tool for stalking in rough country where a longer rifle would be more difficult to manage. Mine is extremely accurate and a joy to handle in the field. I have experienced zero ejection issues and no spent brass has hit my scope. Yes, the Sako was more expensive than some other options on the market, but it’s features, usefulness and value to me in the field have never caused me to regret the purchase. It is always my first choice whenever there is the possibility of encountering bad weather on a hunt and has a permanent place in my collection. In the mountains and thick woods where we hunt it is simply a better tool than some others. While I’ve done it plenty, humping Grandpa’s old 1903 Springfield in the bush doesn’t improve my hunting experience. And stainless steel and composite materials are just easier to maintain than carbon steel and wood in snowy, rainy, damp conditions. If somebody wants a wood stocked rifle with a 24” barrel, Sako will be happy to sell them one. In my opinion, this rifle works great for its intended purpose. Thanks for all you do with the channel.

I watched a manufacturer video of the Sako 85 and they highlighted the fact that their bolt was designed from one bar of steel. The bolt the handle are one piece. Is there any other firearms that use the same practice or should I say design? I would imagine the design and tolerance adds to it's accuracy.

Love your videos. I’ve watched this one a couple times now. I recently purchased a 30-06 in the Black Synthetic model which is not that well known but essentially a Finnlight in a grippy black synthetic stock n barrel. You mentioned the ejection issue and when I took mine out to sight in with some various factory ammo. I noticed my rifle did not eject the Hornady Superformance 165gr GMX cases and the Hornady Custom ammo in 165 gr SP. in fact a couple of the Custom ammo brass hung up in the chamber. The GMX grouped +1.55” and the SP grouped 1.25” which is ok. However, the Federal Premium 165 gr Nosler in nickel brass and Federal Fusion 165 gr both ejected just fine with no issues at all. Fortunately both of these loads shot sub 0.9” so I’ll use the Fed Nosler for hunting this year and the Fusion for back up. I’ll continue to experiment with other brands and bullet weights after hunting season. I must say I just love this rifle and the 85 action.

Thanks for reviewing this outstanding rifle. I have a black bear 85 for almost a decade and i will never sell it. One(and only) negativ point was that the rubberized stock became sticky and I replaced it with a laminated wood stock . Mine is in .308 and shots incredible tight groups. I like to ad a couple points : 1. there is no plastik on this gun . 2. They come with open sights from the factory. The magazin has a build in saftey against loss, you need to push it upwards and push the release button to take it out. The magazin can be topped of with rounds when it is in place- just like a rifle with a fixed magazin. And it has a bolt open feature/ button that allows to open the bolt with the saftey in the on position to clear the chamber. The trigger is adjustable. In my mind the Sako 85 is in every regard a more sophisticated rifle with better build in quality than a Tikka.Admitably a Tikka will shot just as good, but the Sako is a superior rifle.

Very nice review, thank you again! I have a Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 338 Federal that I used to take 2 wild hogs a few years back. I love my Sako in 338 Federal and will never sell it. With the best factory ammo the best accuracy I could get was about 1 to 1.25 inches at 100 yards. With Handloads and Barnes TTSX 210 gr and IMR XBR 8208 powder I get well under 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. Fantastic rifles minus their unique scope mounting system but that's easily solved by buying an adapter to use a picatinny rail. And yes, thank you for pronouncing Sako the correct way! Leupold is another one of those brands everyone pronounces incorrectly. I know Lapua is not pronounces La-poo-ah, but I can't get myself to say it the correct way of lap-wah because it just doesn't sound as cool! :)

Hi! Thank you again for an excellent review. I do however miss a more in-depth explanation of the bolt design. Especially how Sako has tried to combine the «best of two worlds» from both the Mauser/ controlled feed and Remington 700/ push feed designs. If I am not mistaken, they have attempted to incorporate controlled feed, but without the claw extractor spring, to maintain smooth bolt operation. I guess the ejector is a blade style, and not plunger?

It is correct. I have a Sako 85 Bavarian 300 win mag. So far no ejection problem. It has a robust, spring loaded Sako-type extractor and as you've mentioned an ejector blade, just as the Mauser design. I had a CZ550 before, it was a real CF action rifle. The Sako rather in between. The extractor does grab the cartridge definitely before locking the bolt, but not so early, as the Mauser external extractor. On the other hand it is possible to load a cartridge directly into the chamber, just as in a PF rifle. The extractor is so stable, I've seen video, where it has been used for an Rem 700 upgrade. I hope I could give you some useful information.

As many of us know, the name "SAKO" comes from "Suojeluskuntain Ase- ja Konepaja" ("Civil Guard Gun and Machining Works" in English), which was the full name of the old Sako factory until 1938. As a Finn, who is very familiar with Sako rifles, I encourage you to keep on using the pronunciation you've already used :)

I had an 85 in 375 H&H and got rid of it quick. A beautiful rifle, but with a very serious design flaw. The ejector is located at the 6 o'clock position which tends to throw the spent casing straight up into the scope and frequently lands back in the action. Lots of marks on the scope also when they did halfass eject. I own 2 other Sakos, both AVs, and they are my favorite rifles but i would never touch another 85. You could easily lose your life because of one in a dangerous situation.

I was told that, " the only things you know for certain in life are, your Mother and your name, all else can be suspect". This is not to say that we just HAVE to pronounce names correctly, but it is perhaps, nice and maybe polite, to do it so. My nephew's wife is from Finland , and she told me that Tikka, is pronounced as Tik ka, but as she pointed out "you are not from Finland, so you have to speak your own language!" The main point here then, is just make sure, you BUY one of these fine firearms, for your collection. I have one of each, my Tikka T3 is in 22-250 and recently was offered, so I bought, a Sako L461 in .222 caliber and I'm very happy I made the right decision, 'with a little help from my friends'. The barrel is amazing, not a hint of copper fouling after a few hundred rds. would have liked more aggressive checkering. Scope mounting is a pain, went with talley and ended up having to use a offset base. Kinda ugly but never selling it.

I have two Sakos that I love. The Sako 85 has a known issue with ejection and I think I'm not the only viewer who would appreciate some comment on that. The attempt to combine CRF with the three lug bolt has led to a weird compromise in the ejection angle. If you compare it to a Sako A7, the A7 has a plunger ejector placed in a much more "safe" location. I love my old sakos and my Tikka T3, but the compromise made to include CRF feels really weird. It has been said that the 85 has been "fixed". How? Is the ejector filed somehow? Have you tried mounting a low scope on the 85? I would be VERY surprised if the Tikka T3 and the Sako 85 were designed by the same engineer.

  • @UnitedStatesOfGuns

Hello axnordberg, Thanks for your comments. I think I made another video on the 85 and ejection. In the meantime I've tried a half dozen more 85s and found that if the bolt is worked with speed the case is ejected; slow bolt movement can result in the case falling back into the magazine - which happens with other bolt actions. Still, I'm sure they can re-design the ejection system so people have less opportunity to work the bolt in such a way that ejection seems to be a problem. The A7 and most others don't have the 85 style fixed blade - and so are more familiar to shooters. Hope my comments make sense.

  • @Bad_spark

    @Bad_spark

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you for your quick reply! I don't think the issue is with the fixed ejector. People have been using them in great numbers since the 19th century. The problem people are having is with the ejection angle, which sometimes cause the brass to bounce into low mounted scopes. Or scopes that have large windage knobs. This has been more common with some calibers than others. Of course, the choice to go with a fixed ejector made it difficult for the designers to also have a good ejection angle, due to combining these features with a three lug bolt. The design was made when CRF was still a thing. It's no longer a thing. In this video, the youtuber makes his .375 cases hit his scope. The scope isn't even mounted particularly low. The youtuber is not working the bolt very slowly at all. He even claims that Sako told him to change out the scope. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6t2qo-rca6qZKQ.html In this video, the youtuber shows his (rather tacky but surely quite functional) solution the issues he experienced. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pn9lzLiNfc_Ulag.html

axnordberg I have an 85 synthetic black in 30-06 and it also has the ejection issues. I’m using optilock rings and a leupold fxii 6x36 scope, which is a narrow and streamlined scope with small capped turrets. The casings don’t even reach the turret! They hit the bottom right side of the scope. Doesn’t matter how fast I cycle. If I slow down, the casing just falls back in. I’m going to try to replace/modify the extractor as I’ve heard that the tolerance is too loose causing a delay in ejection. If that doesn’t work, I’m just going to sell it...cheap probably, as nobody is going to want a rifle that can’t eject properly with a scope mounted on it.

@@joelgomez328 Are you in the US? Over here in Europe people send their rifles to Sako in Finland to get the ejection fixed. From what I've heard they do some small modification to the ejector (my guess is they file a little bit on the right side of the ejector). That might not be practical for somebody outside of Europe. The Sako 85 bolt was designed when the gun rags were still writing about how controlled round feed is essential when hunting dangerous game. The result is a compromise, but for most users there are no problems. Of course, most sniper rifles employed by militaries world wide are push feed rifles, and today the hype surrounding controlled round feed has died down. I still really like Sako rifles though.

Some Sako 85s do suffer from ejection issues. You need to have a scope mounted on it to know if you have a lemon or not. The spent case will hit the underside of the scope and fall back into the action. I looked at buying a brand new 85 Laminated Stainless in 30-06, but a little research revealed that some rifles have problems. As near as I could determine, the 30-06 was hit or miss with this condition, where the larger calibers seemed to be more susceptible. There are KZread videos that highlight this, and there are plenty of discussions on the many different forums. It's my understanding that Beretta is aware of this but is yet to fix or acknowledge it. Please put a scope on that beauty and do a follow-up video. I'd really like to know how you make out. Thanks!

When you put a scope on it, you will observe the the ejection issue. Sako needs to address this. My rifle ejects perfectly without a scope, but with the scope on, the empties will hit the scope. I have an Arctos in 9.3x62 with a Leupold VX6 1-6 scope. I also have medium Sako Optilock base and rings. It is a shame because the rfle is so accurate.

Thank you; maybe they'll re-position the blade ejector; but that would require a cut in a lug; still they could do it. All the best.

I think the Sako 85 is a well made rifle, but it rubs me the wrong way that they advertise it as being controlled round feed. It is not CRF.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I have a Sako 85 Black Bear in .30-06. In additon, I have several Winchester Model 70s and a couple of Ruger M77, all of the Controlled Round Feed (CRF) variety. The Sako 85 is no more or less a CRF rifle than the M70 and M77s. When pushing the bolt forward on an 85 and stripping the round out of the magazine, the round pops up behind the extractor as soon as it clears the magazine lips, and the round then comes under control of the bolt face and extractor. Exactly as it does on the M70s and M77s. The 85 doesn't utilize a big claw extractor, but it does acomplish the same type of CRF as the M70 and M77 without it. So, if you can call the M70 and M77 CRF, then I think the Sako 85 must be called one, too. The presence of a claw extractor is incidental to the M70 and M77s CRF actions. Remember, the first Ruger M77s, and even the first M77 MkIIs, had big claw extractors but weren't CRF. The Sako 85 brings the cartridge under control at about the same time, and in the same way, as the CRF M70s and M77s. So the 85 is as CRF as those other two types.

They sure do, I got rid of an 85 in 375 H&H because of that problem. The ejector on the 85 is located at the 6 oclock position which tends to eject the spent casing straight up into the scope or turret on the scope, and frequently lands back in the open action. Very dangerous for a dangerous game rifle. Sako needs to address this serious design flaw.
