SAIGON: "I didn't expect daily life to contain so much simple enjoyment."

INTRO: I fully expected Saigon to be interesting and even challenging. But on my second full day in this city, I was surprised at just how pleasurable it was. I didn't expect daily life to contain so much simple enjoyment.
I walked around a lot, as I often do. And I discovered narrow streets that were end-to-end packed with easily accessible food and drinks. I went to a quaint cafe, a modern coffee shop chain, and a basic noodle shop, and the level of friendly customer service astonished me.
Highlights of the day included a Hanoi specialty called egg coffee, a tasty bowl of pho, and a crash course in making your way through the rivers of Saigon scooter traffic.
So, sit back, relax, let me do all the work, and enjoy this video in which I become better acquainted with my new temporary home: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

You chose wisely. that broth has the "golden" hue which is ubiquitous to Southern Pho with rich flavor. Add some Hoi Shin sauce to the broth for more umami. Use fill the small sauce plate with Hoi Shin and chilli sauce and dip the protein before devouring it.

I like the vibe, the energy, the way you share your experiences in your videos. They're simple, but devoted, informative, not rushed, therefore, giving the space for audiences to slowly enjoy them. Glad you had nice memories in Saigon and look forward to your next videos. Edited: Ah one more thing, you speak English very clearly, speed is catchy (not too slow, not too fast). I really appreciate this.

Thank you so much. That's a wonderful compliment. I don't actually set out to make videos like that on purpose. I guess when you shoot video and put them together, your personality and style just comes through naturally. And I suppose I'm naturally a simple and somewhat slow-paced soul. 😁 I remember in the past deliberately trying to make my videos faster and more entertaining and more like a standard KZread video. But over time you can't help but just fall back into your normal rhythms. And I like Saigon very much. The city, and Vietnam as a whole, has been something of a pleasant surprise to me.

@@PlanetDoug my favorite film genre is documentary. I also like talking to my dad about everything. I guess I find a combination of the two given things in your videos. You speak at a moderate pace as my dad does. The way you navigate content to understand more about history, current situation, featured points of wherever you visited is exactly the method I see in documentary. I couldn't find this atmosphere in many youngster travel vloggers. So it was fortunate that KZread suggested your videos to me.

The reason Vietnam does not have night markets is because virtually every street/alley way in every town have small shops/restaurants/[ush carts/street vendors that are opened from early morning to late night, and they are all good, especially in the big cities where it's very competitive. You would be out of business if your food is not good. So it's very cheap to eat out and the food is always good. Any property that faces the street is called "mat tien", which means it can potentially be a store front or business front; the owners either open their own business or rent out the lower floor or just the front of their house to vendors.

You had shared a few stories about your African experiences when we worked together in Taipei. I didn’t know you were there while I was in the middle of my own hell living in Chicago. I think I was talking about my time in Guinea and Ethiopia more often simply because it was more recent. That exchange program to India had a profound effect on me personally and on the direction my life took, and I couldn't stop talking about it for probably a decade afterwards. But from the year 2024, it feels like that was a very, very long time ago. And it's not something I end up talking about naturally unless someone specifically asks me about it. While talking to my friend about India, I reflected that it would be quite interesting to dig up my journals from that time and read through them. I still have them in a box in Canada. But I haven't looked at them for many decades. I can't even imagine at this point what I was writing about at the time. But it would be fascinating to get a reminder of the actual details and logistics of that trip and all the experiences we had. I enjoy making those preview or intro segments for the videos. It even helps me focus more on what the video is about. It forces me to isolate any themes or highlights. But the amount of time it takes to make them is significant. It's a hard choice to make to invest that much time. I just finished an intro for my latest video, and the time required just seem to go on and on and on. It doesn't seem that complicated but somehow the hours just get eaten up. I enjoy the process, and I don't mind the work, but I do start to wonder if my time would be better spent doing something else - like going outside and having some great Vietnamese food. 😀

@@PlanetDoug I do know that many KZreadrs are hiring editors these days. It would take quite a lot of trust for me to let someone else cull through my videos like that, not sure I could. But it definitely would free up a massive amount of time for traveling. Am also guessing it would take a substantial amount of that financial support you receive to pay someone else. That would be quite difficult for me to give up as well. I’m sure you’ll come up with a system to balance travel with post-production. In five years I’m sure you’ll be in a position to get AI to do it for you for much less than another human would charge you.

My only problem is that there just isn't enough time in a day to do everything I need and want to do. I need a 48-hour day, not just 24 hours. I'm still not very good about eating though. I was lucky that my friend from India was here for a while. He often invited me out for coffee, and I'd have something to eat at the same time. I was just reading the information from that sign in the coffee shop, and it said that a Vietnamese barista invented egg coffee. And it was for the reason you suggested. Condensed milk was expensive, and the Vietnamese replaced that ingredient with sugary whipped egg yolk or something like that. And the egg coffee was born.

I've actually come across a lot of young people who either have never heard of travelers checks or have the same question about what they are and how they work. It's funny to think about them now. They are a relic of a long gone era of history. Though, to be honest, I still had traveler's checks right up until 2 years ago. I'd been carrying them around for a long time. And I finally cashed them in at a bank in Kuala Lumpur. But I doubt I will ever get them again. Very few banks can cash them now. In Malaysia, only Maybank would accept them and only at their corporate headquarters in KL. I was told that no other branch could accept them.

Doug, isn't poutine a food that is unique to Canadians? By the way, hope you'll take this constructively: In Vietnamese, the letter O is never pronounced "OH" unless it has a hat over it like this, Ô. Without the hat, it would sound like in the word "bong" (Cheech and Chong's favorite paraphernalia). So bò (in phở bò) would sound more like "bah" than "boh". I know, I know; it's kinda complicated...Looks like you're having a heck of a time over there. Good for you.

But I don't think Canada has a specifically Canadian cuisine. There's certainly nothing in Canada that's the equivalent of Italian, Chinese, Thai, Ethiopian, Korean, Mexican food, etc. we just have food from all around the world, often based on where the family immigrated from.
