I hope this isn't the last time they use the original colors, an omni with this version would match perfectly with the bronze age omni.

I completely prefer the original colors, I'm really glad DC's making collections with the option available.

@TheClarknado I'm really selling her short, even. She worked for EC and was winning awards as best colorist for her work at DC in the early 70s. Dave Stewart/Jordie Bellaire are just the modern Tatjana Wood. She's an OG

This is an essential horror run that belongs in everybody’s collection. I prefer the original colouring so I will always hold onto my standard size hardcovers whilst also buying the absolutes. Very nice packaging from DC for those who haven’t picked up this series before. Thanks Omar, hope you and your family are doing ok.

Loved the box design and finish! I'm glad its still the original colours, much more nostalgic and way cooler than the new recolours. I've pre-ordered mine, since I only have 3 of the original hardcovers, so I can't wait to finish it now.

As a dude that couldn't afford the Absolute versions,this is a good alternate for me. Awesome vid as always,man.

I hope this isn't the last time DC releases Swamp Thing with the original colouring. I'll stick with the HC:s, though, since this is just another printing of the softcovers with a added slipcase. I really hope we get an Omni with Tatjana Wood's colouring, because it deserves the deluxe treatment too! The atrocious "remastering" was the only reason I didn't get the Absolutes. I also don't agree with the notion that the sometimes weird original colouring was a matter of technological shortcomings. Yes, there were limitations back then, but this was an artistic choice done to make the stories feeling even more jarring. Making a "remaster" with warmer, more natural colours disregards Tatjana Wood's contribution to Swamp Thing totally. For me, it would be like someone redrawing the entire Ditko Spider-Man run to make it feel more "modern".

Didn’t know about this set, thanks so much for letting me know. Loved these when they came out so happy to see them gathered in one place. I’d rather they looked and were colored like they were when I initially read them in the 80s, so this is perfect!

One of the best stories of the post Bronze Age. It still feels like the Bronze Age era is still going. It truly ended when Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee entered the picture to the comics industry. To me, that's where the Bronze Age is no more, and the Dark Age has truly began.

Mister E, was also responsible for making Alec Holland's life a living hell and misery. He was always meant to become Swamp Thing from the very beginning. This interconnects everything from Len Wein's and Alan Moore's retcon altogether. Alec Holland was always the avatar of the green since his introduction from Len Wein.

It's been on my wishlist since this video aired. I finally bought it and it arrived today. Super excited to read this for the first time

Oh my! Thank god it's the original colors, I'm gonna grab this for sure. I also love the new paper, I have these in newsprint paper and they're awful, but I refuse to get the absolutes with the new colors. I was waiting for an option with Tatjana Wood's coloring.

Moore's SoST was the only pre COIE DC series I collected. I picked up SoST 21 when I heard he had taken over because I loved his Marvel Man, V4V & Bojegfries in Warrior. And "Anatomy Lesson" just floored me, I had to read it 2x consecutively just to sustain the high i got from the shock ending. And for the next 45++ issues it was simply the most innovative, heart stopping, and human story about a sentient plant I'd ever read. I've always been picky about horror comics/stories finding most of them to be predictable trope ridden reruns of Universal & Hammer's (studios) monster movies &/or B-movie horror films. Prior to that issue I had read a few of my friends Wein Wrightson first Swamp Thing stories which I found despite the masterful art to fall into that category. But as you said Moore's SoST paved the way for Sandman and all of DC's Vertigo hits. Only Moore Bisset & Toetelben could craft a love affair between a girl & a sensient swamp and make you root for them (pun intended) all under the auspices of the CCA too boot. Each issue was like biting into that hallucigenic tuber and experiencing the world thru the eyes of the 80s Avatar of the Green. If you liked Snyder's & Soule's New 52 Swamp Thing--or actually any post Moore Swamp Thing saga (including Ram V current series) this is where it all began!

A friend of mine lended me these comics back in the day and this is perhaps the most intriguing thing I have ever read from a comic perspective.

I got my box today. I'm super excited to read it.

One thing that does look different - these look to have a matte finish paper that is pretty standard at DC right now? The 6 volumes of paperbacks have previously been printed on a newsprint type of paper. This should give the box set books a little cleaner and brighter look than past collections. I'm glad they didn't use those awful new colors though. Those are so far from the original intent it detracts from the original feeling.

One of the best runs from the Big 2 I've ever read. I wish these were hardcover though, because I would probably get rid of the Absolutes and grab this, I'm not really feeling the new colors. Hopefully there will be an omnibus or 2 down the line using the original colors. Thanks for the overview

@@bloh8388 I really wish we could get this in oversized format with the original colors...what would be great would be something scanned or photograph from high grade copies of the original issues...after seeing the books that Folio Soicety and Taschen are doing of old Marvel comics...reprints like these feel like they're missing something. I own some of the Saga of Swamp Thing in floppies and those are still the best looking versions of those issues to me or the black and white reprints Vertigo did years ago.

@@nivekleveb8872 yeah, it’s pricey but honestly, it’s worth it. I’ll just pass over another omnibus or two to be able to grab it. Some of the reasons it’s more expensive is that it is made of three different paper stocks and it’s also at a larger size. It’s more along the lines of a facsimile edition like the Complete Eightball, rather than a standard omnibus.

The Essential Vertigo 1-24 in black and white are nice. I wish they did entire run

Seems like this is a good alternative to buying absolute, and it's cool to know that this might bring new readers into the fold. The only thing that could make this any better is having them hardcover. That would shoot up the price quite a bit but would be worth it. Maybe in the future it'll happen.

So nice that they kept Tatjana`s colors for this but I`m also enjoying the Oliff re-colored pages in the Absolute. I think both are beautiful. They`ll probably reprint the Tatjana Wood edition in some form of hardback in the future.

I own the Absolutes, I'm interested in these for the colors. If only they were hardcover 😫

There are hardcovers of this collection. But not on a boxed set. And they are out of print. You can find them on Ebay tho.

I have yet to read this run and trying to decide which of these editions to get, and although I want a omnibus/absolute for this, I’m drawn more to the older art style. It looks much more fine art and detailed. Probably going to go with the box set for this until they release a absolute with the old colours.

Another timely & comprehensive review Omar . On the color debate, having read this run in singles and then in the hardcovers, I prefer the original colors by Tatjana. Of course Steve Olliff is also a master colorist and using all the latest tools & technology he can definitely make Swamp Thing more Swampy but Tatjana hit the bullseye using the more limited pallet & processes of the mid 80s and on top of everything else it was clearly a labor of love. I wish Olliff had done a more "respectful" recoloring of her work. I'm happy that DC has decided to make this more affordable collection of this top shelf arc and I hope it paves the way for 3 SoST Deluxe Editions with new wraparound covers by the original artists and omnis too. Am I the only one that found the black & white front end cover to be glaring & off-putting & just plain lazy? You'd think the collection designers would have used a mossy green or at least solid black endpapers. I guess you were miffed too because this was the only overview video where you didn't make a comment about the endpapers for all the six volumes. Or is this an accepted limitation of the TPB/softcover format?

I recently sold my Absolutes and snagged the old Vertigo TPB editions with the older paper for cheap enough and made my own Slipcase... just because I was 100% terrified this box set would have the new colors ha!

I just got the first Absolute, stunning book. I just love the Absolute format. The velvet cover is awesome. I didn't read the original books, so I doubt the new colors will bug me.

Is it likely that we will get an omnibus of the Moore run in the coming years?

I’ve not read this series but I have to admit I do prefer the new colours. I have the Sandman boxset and am thankful it has new colours - it looks amazing and visually I don’t think I could’ve withstood reading it in the original colour. (I know it’s odd consider I’m predominantly a manga reader) Unfortunately I don’t read large HC due to the cumbersome size so I’ll just have to wait and see if they’ll rerelease the tpb with modern colours.

Anatomy lesson is the greatest single comic issue of all time.

Hmm... I haven't collected this thus far since I'm waiting for the omni, but I'm undecided about which coloring I'd prefer... I do like the vibrancy of the new ones though.

Tempting to buy this even already owning the first two absolute edition volumes, just for the original color. Could you comment on its paper used? I think you mentioned it's thin glossy paper, but someone on Reddit said it's more newsprint paper which I always dislike and try to avoid. Thanks.

I am a Marvel zombie BUT my favourite single issue of any comic book is Saga of the Swamp Thing No. 21 - it just blew my mind. Still does, even to this day.

Depends on the book. But for this glossy.

Love that Ramsey Campbell put in an introduction for this series. And I'm happy that they haven't reprinted the new colours in these paperbacks. Hopefully if they put out this series in omnibus format they'll use the old colours and leave the new ones as a "premium" feature of the absolutes.

Ramsey Campbell had done an introduction for the very first trade they printed back in the 80`s. This may be the very same introduction. That volume had a painting by Totleben that I`ve never seen reprinted. it was beautiful. Hopefully they`ll reprint that painting in the next Absolute.

Why cant they just make an omni id trash my trades in a second for that

Wonder if they fixed that missing '...And meet the sun' blurb, from issue #24, that you had shown in your original Absolute vs OG colors video. 🤔 Eitherway, I'm definitely looking forward to this, since it'll be my first time reading this run. 😌Here's hoping it stands the test of time.

If the tpbs retailed for 19.99 and the box is 120 that means it’s only a 6 cent markup. That’s not too bad.

Have not read this, but I think I'm gonna pick this up cause I have yet to read something by Alan Moore that I didn't like, it's for that reason I'm kinda considering the miracle man omnibus as well.

The original colors will always be my preference. I like the new colors too but in some scenes they're too vibrant and the way they pop throws the original vibe off and takes away from the horror aspect(most glaringly with oranges, reds, and yellows).

Marvel and DC should do box sets for writers whose run lasted years or at least needed 2 omnibus. I’m talking Geoff Johns’s Green Lantern, Brian Michael Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man, Grant Morrison’s Batman, Ed Brubaker’s Captain America. These runs are just begging to be box sets.

How is It possibile all prefer the old colours? It’s not just a matter of colours, in the new versión even the art itself is more clear and defined, thanks to the effect of the New colors. If they ve had the possibility to choose the kind on colors back in the 80 they would have chosen the New colors

Because some people want to preserve history, as well as their memories. Modern doesnt mean better. If anything, using gradient heavy digital colour is anachronistic and feels jarring for an older era where flats were the predominant stye of colouring (whether that was a limitation of technology is irrelevant). Imagine adding modern synths to Beatle recordings simply because they didnt have the tech at the time.

I am alone in this universe struggling reading book 6? I try so hard to like it but I can't.

I have the absolute version of this series, with the exception of volume 3, and I don't understand why anyone would want the old colors. When it first came out on absolute people were really upset about the colors but isn't that kind of the point with absolute? An upgraded, newer coloring to an older book? Like sandman in absolute.... I dunno, I like the new colors over the old personally....

Yeah I don’t read introductions until I read the book. Specially Roy Thomas.

I love the original colouring because I've compared to it to the new one. It is so much richer, it is more nuanced because it lends so much to your imagination. It hints to the horror and the fantastical, and increases the power of expressions and emotions on the characters. The new colouring however ventures only to capture a younger generation, or just the fact that tastes and habits have changed. It shows and defines too much, the original story did not require it. It is not dated at all. I will reserve hope there will be a future oversized version of the original colouring.

Still waiting on the absolute edition vol 3. Preordered back in march. 😰

Remember to NOT read the introduction of any volume until you have read the material. They are filled with spoilers and assume you already know the materials.

i cant belive i have never read this i got to get to it some day .. not a big fan of box sets i mush preffer 2 omnibuses over this but if its gonna be a box set it would have been nice if they were hardcovers , big plus that it kept the original colors over the new ones

Because of this boxset, I can see an omnibus of this run being delayed... I do hope said omni has the new colors tho, that being said I'm not so picky as to not get an AM ST omni cause it has original colors either.

Yikes! That recolouring job is hideously garish. I have the original trades but they didn't include issue #20, so I'm tempted by this box set, especially with the original colours.

Even with the new coloring, I still prefer the Absolute editions, and am patiently awaiting the 3rd volume.

no disrespect to Mr. Olliff, but having never seen the recoloring before, I can't help but say that the original looks way better for the art style of that particular era. IDK, the recoloring looks "artificial" to me, if that makes any sense
