OMG loved the colors by José Villarubia. It shows when an artist understand and respect the work of the other artist.

I have the omnibus, but may just grab this absolute. I was lucky enough to meet Bernie once. I worked at a Lowe's in Austin, and mixed paint for him. He gave me his name and I wasn't that familiar with him at the time, but knew this name. I asked if he was that "Bernie Wrightson." He said yes, and told him I loved his artwork and if he'd be at any local cons. He said they usually are and we shook hands. I gave him the couple gallons I made. Off he went. All I can say is it's nice to touch greatness in your life. Especially when you realize we're all just people living our lives. Everything you do, they do.

That close up art of Swampy by Bernie is brilliant! I like the recolouring in this book, makes me want to add this to the collection although I have the omni. Thanks Omar!

Looks great alongside the Alan Moore Absolutes. I would 100% pick this edition up if shelf space wasn't at a premium and didn't already own the Bronze Age omni.

I heard that Alan Moore’s run was a great place to start, but this collection looks great. I think I’ll be adding it to my Alan Moore absolutes. 👍🏾

wow.... makes me wish we'd get Alan Moore's swamp thing with "original" color restoration. fingers crossed for an original colors omnibus since it's the only format that it's uncollected in now. I just don't think DC realizes what they're missing. Like... tatjanna wood is mentioned in the foreword IIRC. almost disrespectful to mention the importance of the coloring in a book that's been recolored. Same thing with the intro in Batman: Year One deluxe edition and I think Killing Joke deluxe. so rude.

I almost picked this up at my LCS this week but was worried about the new colors, thanks for the review I'll definitely be grabbing a copy now!

And, if tears could come, they would. Such a great intro to a timeless character. Marry Christmas, bruh!

Great video! I'll be picking g up my copy next week so your video will tide me.over until I get this in my hands. I'm not against these color upgrades in Swamp Thing, Sandman and others as I tend to have them all in multiple formats. I have the luxury of enjoying both the originals and modern coloring. I think this book looks fantastic. A great tribute to 2 of my favorite creators that left us far too soon.

Definitely getting this despite already having the trade. DC needs to release a deluxe edition hardcover of Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson. Marvel needs to do the same with Punisher: POV, also by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson.

I was going to get this once upon a time, but opted for the Bronze Age Omni instead, as it included this and everything leading up to the Alan Moore Absolutes. Plus those Nestor Redondo issues are 🔥.

@@CarlosDias-er6dd all I can say is it has Swamp Thing #1-24 and then Saga of the Swamp Thing #1-20. Alan Moore's run begins with Saga #21. So if something is missing, I can't say what it would be.

I got this on the way, can't wait. Saga of Swamp Thing got me hooked. Love the old school colors and art. Highly recommend if never had the chance. Also Ram V modern run is excellent as well

I blindly bought this one. Just because I love the format of the Swamp Thing absolutes.

I just received mine today and it's so cool seeing how good the art & story is for the early appearances of Swamp Thing. This book is going right on the shelf next to the Alan Moore Swamp Thing Absolutes.

Wasn’t considering this one but after seeing this its at the top of my list. It’s such a beautiful book

Not sure how I feel about those colors. Unlike the Moore Absolutes, I grew up with the original colors. However, I have the Bronze Age Omni, and was looking forward to the modern color facelift. But... it just looks like all they did is give everything a pink/purple hue. Doesn't look as nice or as modern as those Moore Absolutes to my eyes. I'm on the fence about this. Swamp Thing Dark Genesis was the first trade I ever had, and the first comics I ever read. I loved the cartoon as a kid, but the comics were so much better. Swamp Thing just punking Batman out was mind-blowing to a 7 year-old. And of course, that Wrightson artwork is just masterclass. EDIT: That's what I get for commenting before the video's done. So, I guess I grew up with the 90's recoloring of these issues.

Looks amazing, picking mine up soon.

I’ve got this in the Bronze Age collection but I had to upgrade to the Absolute cos of the beautiful artwork. It’s very cool that it matches up well with the Alan Moore Swamp Thing Absolutes, somebody was paying attention @ DC. Disappointed there’s no ribbon though. Great overview as always Omar.

Just be aware that the recolors in those Moore Absolutes are not up to this standard, in fact they are pretty terrible. I stuck with my old standard size hardcovers.

HUGE omnibus exists of man thing tho oop think so great no think exists i looked SEE INSTOCK TRADES!!!!! i just ordered 2 more omnis there! free ship usa they got few swamp thing absolut even og great tpb 6 in thick box now!! by moore swampy!!! he deserves damn omnibus i got all wein 1st orig. omnibus swamp thing has 3 long runs curious why this has 13 issues 1 has think the 13, 24 n too 1-19 that famously moore started his #1 as #20....as if continuing....

That swamp thing no. 7 cover was "replicated" or homaged in Scott Snyder's Rotworld Saga. but I think the bat symbol is in the sky.

Thanks for another great overview, Omar. You certainly answered the one big question I had before purchasing this, which is the color restoration. I was afraid that DC might go with "modern colors" like those hideous Alan Moore Absolutes. I read these stories in the 1970s and it looks as I remember it, as you say. Looks beautifully done, probably the best presentation of the material yet. I will buy this Absolute despite already having the original issues and many reprints, including the omnibus.

Quick question, I have heard that reading these first issues before Alan Moore’s run enhances your appreciation of Moore’s saga. Does this Absolute (and the first half of the issues it collects )provide a sufficient overview of Swamp Thing and his story before reading Moore’s run? Or should I just pick up the Bronze Age omnibus which collects the second half of the early issues all the way up to when Moore took the reigns?

I was looking at my local comic shop for ordering the Absolute but there showing a different cover type? Same ISBN number? Are there more different covers then? Sorry for my english 😉

I saw my two original pages of Wrightson art in the flip - wonder where the scans came from...

Two things. 1. Though the coloring here is much better than the Alan Moore Absolutes, if you compare this to the original coloring, it does stray away from and take a few liberties with it on occasion. BUT they're reasonable changes that make sense for the context. Like the purples. I notice a lot of purple here when in the original issues it's more blue. So, like, that's reasonable. 2. I noticed on one part that they didn't take into account an ad that was in the original issue so the pages ended up on the wrong side after that. Not sure if it's like that throughout all of the issues. So, this is a flattering edition, I'd say. I hope that they do the same to the Alan Moore ones but that'd involve... probably more effort than they're willing to produce. Don't think they'd be keen to pay up yet again for something that sold so well anyways. It'd have to be a passion project on someone's behalf. P.S. It'd be nice if they did a sequel for the other issues that followed up on this Wein/Wrightson run. That way you wouldn't have a gap between this and the Alan Moore ones.

Considering Jose's stated aim was to get as close as possible to the original colours, I highly doubt there's any "liberties" taken. Are you sure you're not comparing it to the recolourings which have been done on every reprint except this one?

@@dapope3673 No, I compared it to the original issues, but I double-checked and it's pretty much the exact same colours, actually. However, I'm still going to have to go with it being decidedly more purple-ish and warm in the Absolute. Honestly, having a hard time deciding if it's because the colors are so faded in the original that when you bring them out like this it gives it a particular vigor. It could also be Omar's camera settings skewing it somewhat that direction. So, yeah, idk about "liberties" for this one... I’m betting that Jose’s colors match the original color guides. Purple was a color that was hard to reproduce correctly back then, and it may fade faster as well.

Sorry for being off-topic, but I was hoping you could provide your opinion on John Byrne’s Next Men? Have you ever read it? I think it’s my favorite story he’s ever told from start to finish… Is there a consistent series of collections that you’d recommend for it? I have all the original issues, but want to have the series on my bookshelf. But the collection formats seem to be all over the place. Thanks!!! (PS: I haven’t forgotten about scanning & emailing you that Claremont X-men story! I’m about halfway through the scans.)

I agree with you, Next Men is an amazing series that no one seems to talk about anymore. I wanted it in hardcover but the original run is reprinted in a small HC and then two larger HCs. I don’t know what IDW was thinking. I have the original run in the Dark Horse softcovers and then I purchased the IDW Next Men Classic softcovers because they contain some material never collected before.

Oh really? What new material did those collections have?? Does IDW still have the reprinting rights to it? An omnibus would be so stellar… Also, do they have the rights for the prequel 2112? And one last question, if you have the answer to this too haha, didn’t the reporters that eventually show up in the series appear in another very early John Byrne indy series beforehand? Thanks in advance if you know the answers for taking the time to reply…

Omar just slit down the plastic where the books come out and tape the flap in the box and that way the leaflet stays in the back too , I do that for all my box sets and same with dvd box sets i used to buy

I'm saying I hope that the second half of the omni (the issues after this absolute and before alan moores run) are collected in a absolute so everything up to the end of moores run is in absolute format.

I have the Dark Genesis and printed in black and white and I prefer the latter.

I think it's a velvet book cover? I would imagine "felt" is a little different Edit: Added quotes to felt since it is a type of material

I think the term is flocked...that's the term used for toys and action figures as it doesn't really feel as soft as velvet nor as fine as felt like on billiards table.

No, not a single reprint or collection before this one has used the original colors, not ever, including the omnibus. If you want the original colors, you get this or the original comic books. That's it.

😂 I have the omnibus too, but I’m not gonna throw it away! It does collect a lot of additional stories not in the Absolute Edition. I think the colors for the original run are better in this absolute though. I haven’t received my copy yet.

Question: is there a direct market, and/or variant cover to this book? P.S. WE NEED SEASON 2 of The TV SHOW SWAMP THING! COME ON DC!! Season 1 was freaking amazing!😱

no, there isn't and Swamp Thing was canceled so we won't get a season 2

I like the original Swamp Thing better than the swamp god we got later.

This has been asked in other comments here and not answered: This covers issues 1-13 and Alan Moore’s Saga starts at issue 20. Is there no Absolute Edition that covers issues 14-19? I know this is focusing on specific creators but the completist in me is going nuts at the idea of missing those issues.

Ordered my copy from IST and it's en route, but super disappointed with the choice of adding fake grain effects to a glossy paper. Would have preferred if they did a matte newsprint to get that effect.

I don’t Batman has ever beaten swamp thing.

The original colours are in the Bronze Age omnibus he’s more green and the colours are different I find in this absolute edition are more purples and pinks but they definitely set the tone of the overall story. Tho I’m glad I have both versions:)

the bronze age omnibus is based on recolored reprints from the 80s, the absolute is closest to the originals

the ones from the omnibus are recolors made from the reprints, these are color restorations from the original issues. This is the first time these stories have been reprinted in their original form

And the color restoration is by Jose Villarubia, one of the best in the business. Only Dave Stewart ranks above him in my opinion.
