The mom projects so hard on Mae that its painful. She becomes the mother she wanted to have, she proves so by neglecting her own kids to tend for Mae. It's really painful to watch and then, and she never, not even once, recongnizes her own part on how her family just doesn't want to be with her

I theorize that Maes plan included finding another mother to attach herself to, so that when the time comes for the next sacrifice, the new mother would be mentally deteriorating trying to hold onto Mae. Eventually they'll turn away from their own life to preserve the chain. But because this seems like a bloodline thing, The new mom would be initiated in that cult to preserve the chains.
