Truly underrated movie
This sounds suspiciously like the story of Denis Rader, aka BTK. He was also a much loved and respected member of the community active in his church and I think also a scout leader. He killed from 1974-1991 and was only caught in 2004.

Btk wasn't well like in the general community. He never got past being a low level employee in several difference occupations because his innate arrogance rubbed people the wrong way. He did slightly better in volunteer jobs with scouting and the church, but that was due to the fact that reliable volunteers aren’t thick on the ground, so he was given more leeway. He was a basic nobody loser who thought he had somehow been cheated out of the power, position and respect in life he felt was due him.. He was an egotistical idiot.

Kinda sucks as none of the people who had loved ones that were victims of the killer will ever get closure. I mean I'd be pretty mad if I found out the person who killed my loved one was remembered as a good upstanding member of society.

I think y’all are being too soft with these answers lol. You have to realize that these people are CHRISTIANS! They live in a very religious society, are extremely family oriented, and the highly respected in the church. If his father had been exposed, that family would have suffered every single day with people shunning them and most likely the church shunning them. Which would be even worse. If you all were apart of a family like this, I bet you wouldn’t think twice of protecting your family from public humiliation and and absolute hatred.

An interesting ethical choice: reveal the truth and give the families of the victims closure at the price of his family becoming ostracized, or keep the secret and protect his family while keeping the community in a state of limbo and denying the families of the other victims justice and closure.

cuz of love for his mother and sister, he knew what would happen if the truth was revealed, he wanted to spare her mother and sister from the pain he is suffering, selfish indeed but it's something we wouldn't know how to react in the moment, from an outside position we would want justice, but in his place it would be pretty conflicting, plus he destroyed the evidence so leverage to get a conviction would get weaker, so he wanted to make it quick

Whose to say that he's not just a copycat killer? In court he could easily sell himself as a fan of the killer and get significantly less time with that and good behavior. It could very easily be twisted into a attempted murder with breaking and entering. The proof also got burned by the son, and the wife knows nothing so the other families wouldn't have ever really got justice. Then the father would get out and continue his passion lol.

This movie was actually really great when I watched it on Netflix last year. I was surprised. I’ve always been a fan of Dylan McDermott though, especially in season 1 of American Horror Story.
This is what most heroes are portrayed to be.

They destroyed the evidence. So if they'd gotten him arrested, the families would get closure for sure but not justice. Since that lady didn't see his face, i don't even know if the B&E and attempted murder can be tied to his name. So what they did is for the best, coz the families will get justice (tho they might not know about it) but they wouldn't get closure, which is still better than him getting a lighter sentence and roaming around freely.

Sometimes rough justice is the best justice. Maybe it's not the pc thing to say, but I think they did they right thing. The father would have never stopped and would have killed his own son to do it.
At first watch i thought the ending was bad and he families of the victims deserved closure and to fing put who the killer was. However upon thinking about it more, justice was served anyway and the family of the killer can try to live a normal life... A very odd but fascinating ending with no real right choice.

An easy thing to say when you haven't been in their shoes. Plus how would they move on exactly?? They can do anything but still be stagnant to the fact that their loved one is still missing or was murdered.
WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE THEM AND THE WOMAN NEVER SAW HIS FACE??? They literally caught him in the act and could have called 911 right then. But who cares about alo the other victims and their families. What selfish horrible kids. They had enough evidence to show the police and who knows what else they might have had in evidence they never publicized that might have further helped. Not to mention he was there and they caught them. A good movie up until that point. It feels like it was written by a serial killer.
