Could you also do a video about mormonism? I know it is a pretty new religion. but at least their holy scriptures claim to be from abraham, mose and ancient america and they integrated much more old testament stuff than other christian religion. and would you consider mormonism even a monotheistic christian religion?

Even when his fraud was exposed his followers are blind to it and dismiss it as a disbeliever trying to sabotage their living gods reputation. That's blind faith.

The story actually doesn’t completely end there, in a previous video you mentioned the Bal-Shem-Tov, who used kabbala in his teaching. However, due entirely to the story on this video, there was a massive movement against him and his successors, known as the ‘misnagdim’ (or roughly translated, ‘the apposition’). If you can do a video on this, that would be amazing, it leads all the way to our times, and would explain the general split in the different community’s and the ‘Chabad-Lubavitch community’ you mentioned in the Chanukah episode.

Sabbateanism was suppressed by the rabbinic authorities. Even though it persisted in different ways, it became unmentionable and forgotten by most Jews. Honestly I always think its really good when people of religion are willing to find out real history and learn more about the true history and events around your faith rather than just use one book for everything in life. It doesn't harm your faith in any way even if you learn things that don't totally fit with the accepted dogma, scripture etc surly that's what faith is all about. In my opinion knowing as much as possible and learning can only be a good thing. As a agnostic I really don't like organised religion at all but that's another story. I have absolutely no problems with personal faith and always try to understand and defend anyone's right to be themselves and do, think, feel, believe of or in whatever that person wants. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone else and they are willing to accept that things might not be as their religion says all the time, at least question it, even if at the end they decide the new view is wrong. The best Christians etc I've met and talked to have been the ones who remain open to new ideas but retain their beliefs all the same and have found their own way to believe in the scripture etc. Peace, hope I've not offended you in any way I truly wanted to say I think your approach is the right one.

I spent some time in Amsterdam a few decades ago. The aftershocks of Dhabbetai Zvi were very apparent. Many substantial differences in liturgical practice, as a strong reaction to Sabbatarianism, to expunge it, were strictly observed. Anything that smacked of kabbalah had been removed. Prior to this, Amsterdam was called the Jerusalem of the West. A later Chief Rabbi of the Amsterdam Ashkenazi congregation, Zvi Hersh Ashkenazi, became embroiled in a fierce conflict over a suspected Sabbatarian author. His departure from Amsterdam marked the beginning of decline.

Okay I need help on a couple points: 1) - I thought 'Sabbatean' was a term derived from 'sabbath' - used to describe those Christian movements that observe a 7th day sabbath rather than Sunday (for instance, 7th Day Adventists, 'Messianic Christians' and similar). Does Sevy have anything to do with this? Are the two words only incidentally similar; or did I make this idea up all together? 2) - I wonder if Sevy's effect on Judaism had anything to do with the (I suppose more modern) Jewish conception that the 'Messiah' is an era, a state of mind, or even a symbol of Jewish prosperity, rather than an actual figure -- whether it is or isn't, I would love to see a video on 'Messiah = symbol, not person.' and 3) - you said early in the video, that recent scholarship has made connections showing how Sabbateanism influenced Christianity and Islam afterword, but I didn't hear much on this... What influences? Thanks,

  • @varana

Sabbatai is the name of Saturn in Hebrew, and the Sabbath is Satur(n)-day. Zvi's name is probably self-adopted. So both refer to the Sabbath in some way. According to Wikipedia, the Christian movements are called Sabbatarianism; in other languages (like mine), the names are identical. Still, two very different movements.

TBH for all that I love AMH, don't learn to pronounce things from him. The quality of his pronunciations varies greatly. Instead, you should learn to read the international phonetic alphabet. You should be able to find accurate IPA transcriptions for names of major figures, and for lesser know figures as long as you know what language the name is from you can figure it out pretty easily.
