Attack of the Dead." "Attack of the dead" is a common journalistic name for the counterattack of the 13th Company of the 226th Zemlyansky Regiment on July 24 (August 6), 1915, when repelling a German gas attack. An episode of the defense of the Osovets fortress on the Eastern Front during the First World War. The fortresses of Osovets and Novogeorgievsk were important points of defense of the "Polish Sack", as the military jargon of that time called the territory of the Kingdom of Poland, which protruded deep to the west and was vulnerable from the northern and southern flanks. Osovets fortress was a system of 4 forts connected by trenches in a bend of the Beaver River. The fortress blocked the Lyk-Grajevo-Bialystok railway that passed through it and the highway to Bialystok, an important regional transport hub. The main fortifications and fortress artillery were located on the eastern bank of the river. On the swampy western bank, under the cover of the fortress ' guns, the forward Sosnenskaya position was located at a distance of 2 - 2.5 km, passing from north to south along the Bialogronda-Sosnya line. This position was the main focus of the previous general assault on the fortress in February-March 1915. For a new general attack, the 11th division of the Landwehr was allocated. The 18th regiment, reinforced by marching units, was deployed in the main direction along the highway and railway. To the south, the 76th Regiment was to attack. For the success of the operation on the front of both regiments, it was decided to use a massive gas-cylinder attack with chlorine. The other parts of the division to the north and northeast were to support the attack with demonstrative actions. At dawn at 4:00 am on July 24 (August 6), 1915, with a tailwind along the entire front of the attack, the release of chlorine from 30 gas-cylinder batteries deployed in advance began. It is estimated that the gas eventually penetrated to a total depth of up to 20 km, maintaining a damaging effect to a depth of up to 12 km and up to 12 m in height. In the absence of any effective means of defense from the defenders, the result of the gas attack was devastating: the 9th, 10th and 11th companies of the Zemlyansky regiment were completely out of action, from the 12th company in the central redoubt, about 40 people remained in the ranks; from the three companies at Bialogrond-about 60 people. Almost all the first and second lines of defense of the Sosnenskaya position were left without defenders. Following the gases, the German artillery opened fire on the fortress and barraged its attacking units. The artillery of the fortress at the initial stage could not effectively fire, as in turn it was hit by an impending gas wave. This was aggravated by the simultaneous shelling of the fortress with both conventional shells and shells with chloropicrin. In the fortress, more than 1,600 people were out of action, in general, the entire garrison received poisoning of varying severity. Suppressing single resistance, the units of the 18th regiment quickly overcame the first and second lines of barbed wire, occupied the tactically important fortified point "Leonov's yard" and began to move along the railway track to the Rudsky Bridge. The only reserve on the Sosnenskaya position itself was the militia company, but it also had up to 50% of its personnel poisoned, and the demoralized remnants of the company could not conduct an effective counterattack. The situation was slightly better in the south of the position. The 76th Landwehr regiment quickly occupied the depopulated Pine, but advanced too quickly and fell under its own gases, suffered significant losses and was temporarily stopped by the fire of the remnants of the 12th company at the central redoubt. There was a real threat of the capture of the Rudsky Bridge by the Germans, which would mean cutting the entire defense west of the fortress and losing the Sosnenskaya position. In this situation, the commandant of the fortress, Lieutenant-General N. A. Brzhozovsky, ordered to organize artillery fire on the areas of the Sosnenskaya position already occupied by the enemy and to counterattack with bayonets "with everything that is possible". In the counterattack went the remnants of the 8th and 13th companies (about half of the original composition) and transferred from the fortress slightly less affected 14th company. The 13th company under the command of Lieutenant Kotlinsky counterattacked the units of the 18th regiment along the railway and put them to flight. During the attack, Sub-lieutenant Kotlinsky was mortally wounded and handed over command of the compound to sub-lieutenant of the 2nd Osovets sapper company V. M. Strzheminsky, who, despite severe gas poisoning, with the remnants of the company entrusted to him, brought the attack to an end," bayonets " capturing the 1st and 2nd sections of the Sosnenskaya position. At the same time, the 8th and 14th companies unblocked the central redoubt and together with the soldiers of the 12th company drove the enemy to their original positions. By 8 a.m., all the consequences of the German breakthrough were eliminated. By 11 a.m., the shelling of the fortress stopped, which was the formal end of the failed assault.

Chlorine poisoning has two stages; initially it causes breathing problem and the victim collapses from hypoxia... then, there is a "window" of temporary improvement; for some time the poisoned person nearly comes back to normal. This does not last long, however. In a few hours the lungs are filled with fluid and the victim suffers a painful death...

Imagine being one of those german soldiers... you unleash a devastating gas attack that shouldn't have left any survivors. you get out of your trenches to march on the fortress, expecting no resistance as the fort is manned by dead men, but as you march forward you hear something. laboured, bubbling breathing from gas ravaged lungs that are struggling for air, this fortress you are marching on is not as empty as you thought. these men who by all rights should have been corpses were staggering, stumbling and crawling forward through the fog of battle. their tunics stained with the acidic liquid mess bubbling from their throats, spitting out chunks of bloody viscera and the remains of their own gas rotted lungs, but coming towards you all the same. these dead men, who spit in the face of death himself to make sure that you join them, are lurching from the poison mist with rifles up and bayonets glinting and suddenly your march faulters, the men behind you are already taking hasty steps backwards. these stumbling, staggering horrors from the worst of your childhood nightmares have revenge burning in their sunken eyes and then suddenly the gunfire, starting off sporadic and innacurate but getting slowly closer, shots kicking up sprays of mud around your feet. as the realisation that the dead have been reanimated before you with all their rage, the men around you letting out horrified gasps before they turn to run. the volleys from these deadmen taking down any who dont run fast enough. that is the horror that was witnessed on the battlefield before the Osowiec Fortress, and that is how 12 battalions turn and run.

Cliffs of Gallipoli another WW1 war song by Sabaton and this song is about a battle between the Germans and the Russians in WW1 on the eastern front. The Russians were outnumbered and heavy battered demon the Germans and then the Germans launched poison gas on the fortress where the Russians were holding. The Germans marched forward only to be met with Russians coughing up blood and their own lungs charging back at them. The Germans were so terrified they ran back and in the papers it became known as the Attack of the Dead men
