Not only is Joakim’s coordination in that mask impressive, but, in my eyes at least, it’s impressive he’s in that whole get-up. He’s constantly singing in a mask that probably restricts breathing somewhat, and wearing that heavy and warm looking coat on stage with a decent amount of stage lighting, which from my knowledge is pretty warm as it is. I’m surprised he wasn’t passing out with all that.

There is a great movie called The Lost Battalion based on this. Definitely worth checking out. The Commander of the battalion Captain Whittlesey sadly killed himself in 1921 due to his experience of the war. He was travelling on a ship from to Havana from New York. On the first night at sea he had dinner with the captain of the ship and then announced he was retiring to his room, he was never seen again, presumably jumped off the ship and drown. He left a will and letters in his cabin addressed to friends and family.

Even if a Russian soldier is dead, it does not mean that he is 100% dead. He can still fulfill his mission. ... In the Soviet Union, and now in Spetsnaz, there was a saying -: "the US Army -" execute the order or die." ... Russian army - "die, but execute the order". ... Not even death can justify disobeying an order. So it was once, and so it is even now in the Russian soul.

I can't imagine the terror that each German soldier had when he saw Russian soldiers standing up, staggering, twisting blood and pieces of lungs going towards them shouting and shooting, those men were going to die, but they didn't go alone! Such terror hung up to WWII, when the generals instructed Hitler to use gas bombs against civilians in London, Hitler who survived a gas attack refused - Do you remember what happened in Osowiec?

Great video ! I really liked it ^^ As for the courage of the 100 Russians, I don't deny it, they were incredibly brave et resilient, but also they had nothing to lose. They had been exposed to the gas, they were half-dead already. A few of them died from being exposed to the gas a few hours after their counter-attack (notably the officer leading the counter-attack). They were heroes and I really like this song and this story ^^

I hated music lessons at school, because teacher kept telling that decent people listen only classic music. And I did not understand theory (music was the only subject I kept cribbing), so now I am listening, listening to others reacting and looking for explanation what makes me feel the way as I feel.

BTW, I have learned that most soldiers in the army of the Russian Empire had to rely on the rag they had peed on. No gas masks. Bad luck for those who could not cook their water and, as result, got diarrhea.

Reminds me of the training we underwent in the USAF having to go inside a dark, almost unlit building with our masks at our sides. The room was already filled with teargas (CS pellets). The feeling of the stinging effects of the CS gas in our eyes, waiting for the command to put our masks on, then the struggle to don our masks properly, helped to give us a real understanding of what a chemical attack might entail. Even though it was only tear gas. I can't imagine what these soldiers endured which was far deadlier and the survivors still having the presence of mind to conduct a counterattack.

It wasn't just the 100 soldiers. The Russians brought in reserves from further behind the frontlines to launch a counterattack and the 100 "dead men" charged the enemy alongside that counterattack. The Russians were still vastly outnumbered, but it wasn't as extreme as 7000 against 100.

Nice episode. I was wondering if you were considering a reactions to bad and good effects series. The smoke effects in the live segment reminded me of a performance of "mystery of a blood red rose" by Avantasia (lead singer is Tobias Samet, also lead of Edguy and was the Captain in "The Day that the World Breaks Down") at Masers of Rock 2016 where the smoke effects were a little off. Then there are other more tragic and serious incidents like James Hetfeild Montreal 1992 burns. Don't know if that would be something the subscribers would be interested in.

Props on your hopes for live foxes, but based on being one of the lucky ones hearing Gwar soundcheck I’d say this one is “lipsync”. Gwar without masks sounds amazing. But they life with the muffled vocals. I’d say same goes for Slipknot. Other side is that the vocals are really dynamic and doesn’t sound muffed. So if this is live, I’d be really interested in their setup. For the smoker backpack, a good battery pack and some pre-heating on a PowerPoint cable would do. The backpack is wide enough to hide say a Unieqe without flipping the darn thing. Would have loved the challenge of building one of those. There is craftsmanship into that beauty!

I remember back when I was first getting into Sabaton, shortly after The Last Stand was released, I saw a fan video for Last Dying Breath that used scenes from a movie or TV presentation of the fight at Osowiec. A little searching and I discovered the history of the battle, which I’d never heard of before. I wonder if the band were in any way inspired to do this song because of that fan video.

The history lessons Sabaton provide time and again is for me the major appeal - the sound is kinda expected/run of the mill at this point, but the themes and writing brings new stuff to the table all the time. I think you're having a great balanced focus on the history/facts and the music! Also, huge props (pun intended) to all the techs and crew in general working with stuff like this - Sabaton is of course a very ambitious example in use of tech and props, but it's an aspect and a skill often overlooked. Those gas warfare costumes and mic rigs are sick, can't even imagine how hot it has to be performing in that outfit and how low the visibility has to be. Gas masks, especially old ones are... not great in terms of visibility.

Tank, 2 things I want to mention: 1) The woman's voice tracked at the beginning of the live video is from the "History Version" of the album. That version has her voice doing a couple sentences at the beginning of each song. 2) I know they were doing the gas mask with the song in the US leg in October 2019. This album was released July 2019. This is their first tour with Attack of the Dead Men in their repertoire. I can't picture them adding it on the fly that fast, so yeah, the gas mask was always part of the touring version.

The whole zombie thing started *way* before the battle. The Norse draugr translates to Risen Walker for a reason. It even pre dates the viking culture. Ancient Greeks and Egyptians nailed down corpses to prevent them from returning

Fun fact about these regulations: Flamethrowers, gas, serrated bayonets, clubs, even axes were considered okay, but the germans started complaining when the american marines brought in shotguns with bayonets. Think about that, the rest was all okay, but heavens forbid bayonet equipped shotguns.

YES! Love it dude! Personally recommend The Last Battle, it's a great song, and the history is crazy, defecting Wehrmacht, US army, and french politicians fighting the SS in an Austrian castle, days before the German surrender. But you should do Primo Victoria next, it's a classic for a reason. EDIT:Also not pictured in the video, but they let the smoke flow out over the front few rows of the audience before the song, it was super intense down there.
