Imagine this: You are a German soldier on the eastern front. You are told that you were just to mop up a few remaining patches of resistance after the gas attack and be back home in time for dinner (-ish). Then you lift your head over the top and see a bunch of armed enemy soldiers staggering towards you in extended line who, for all intents and purposes look like they died a week ago already. And they start shooting at you. You start picking them off, but they keep coming. They seem not to care about their own state and whether or not they get shot at - some even seem eager to get shot. Those dead men press forward relentlessly. And you...You you happy few stand in the way of an enemy that has a) nothing left to lose anymore because they will be dead in an hour no matter what and b) is absolutely freaking livid because of you being where you are. Some general is said to have said that any soldier’s aim should not be to die for his country, but to make sure that the other guy dies for his. For all you know, the other guy has already done his bit and died for his country. But now that dead guy has come back to make sure that you too hold up your end of the same bargain. If this does not let raw, visceral and the unholiest of terror well up in you, you are already less of a human that this war has already made you.

"Some general is said to have said that any soldier’s aim should not be to die for his country, but to make sure that the other guy dies for his." It was Gen. George Patton, during WWII. He was a lieutenant general at the time. The full quote, for those interested, is: "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." "...some even seem eager to get shot." Given how horrific death by chlorine gas is, I'm betting that's quite true.

The psychological effects of seeing the supposedly dead Russian soldiers stand and start to fight and kill your allies. It being the dark of the morning and this creepy green mist left in the air from the chlorine gas probably made it harder mentally on the German soldiers. Truly a horrible experience for everyone involved.

  • @fisheyenomiko

Also, the gas was killing *everything*; plants, animals; the grass turned grey and any foliage was essentially gone. There was also rubble from Osowiec Fortress strewn about. These may seem like small things, but just imagine how much that added to the chaos and feeling of... death that permeated the place.

it was even MORE terryfying when you read the details of the battle. the osoweic wernt just wrapped in bandages they were COVERD in chemicals burns there eyes sufferd damagee and were pure bloodshot red while crying tears of blood they were in so much pain that they moved in a jerky stumbling way while there where coughing up bits of there lungs and vocal cords only able to wheeze and inhumanly scream and croak even there WEAPONS had decayed under the gas now appearing entirly rusted. plus a russian battalion had finally arrived for reinforcements far behind the fort coverd in thick gas and began to fire on the germans threw it making it seem to the germans that ALL of the dead were coming back. aka in every convinciable method and way to the germans they truly were the angry dead returned to seek venagance and truly they were dead men walking filled with the adrenaline and rage to seek vengance one last time the only diffrence being they hadnt died yet.

I would describe the sensation as: If youve ever drank soda and burped out your nose, you'll notice a stinging in your sinuses. A very light whiff (I took the beaker out of the fume hood for 2 seconds) resulted in the same pain, but 50x more intense.

I remember when I first watched this video, I recalled a music video for "Last Dying Breath" by Moonumental, which perfectly fits into the Attack of the Dead Men, I think it simply was this story that video was based on. Anyway, I recommend you check that out in context of this song.

Wow! This is and intriguing story. I'll have to check this out. I'm new to WWI. I'll be 43 next week and until recently knew next to nothing about it until a random comment on an episode of "Friends" made me curious.

One thing I haven’t really heard mentioned was how ghastly the sight must’ve looked for an advancing German soldier through a gas mask that didn’t give optical clarity also in combination with whatever dirt, mud, blood, etc. Then to see a fortress in the background with an eerie green mist all through the lens of the gas masks had to be absolutely terrifying! Plus we have the luxury of now knowing what the gas does. For some of the common foot soldier, who knows what type of stories filled their minds’? Could’ve been a vengeance from God for such a terrible weapon that kills without honor or conscience? A million things must’ve gone through their minds. Curious what your thoughts might be on this idea?

This depicts why one of the rules of Sun Tzu in the book Art of War is that you should ALWAYS leave one path of retreat to the enemy. When your very last options are die or die fighting, you surely choose to fight with your highest level of resistance and pretty much you become a menace in berserk mode.

There are misconceptions about this battle. Defense was organized in several layers with several km distance in between. Gas attack killed everyone in the first line of defense. Second line was mortally intoxicated, but alive and they checked the german advance. Garrison in the actual fortress was only lightly intoixcated and sent out reinforcements. Artillery battery in the fortress was fully operational and inflicted serious damage on the attackers. Germans did not run like cowards. They fought, there was a melee, but with artillery support and several counter attacks from the fortress germans have been routed.
