For the Russian front at Osowiec, retreat wasn't an option. The Russians were pulling back into a more defensible position and they needed key areas like Osowiec to hold the line so they could cover their retreat. If the Germans took the fort, they would be able to turn it on the Russians, giving them a foot hold and wreaking damage on their numbers. So, the Russians at the fort were holding the Germans back, again and again and again, until Hindenburg decided to cut losses to his men and brought in the gas. There were only 900 Russians defending Osowiec, and only 100 got back up after the gas was unleashed. Edit: Regarding the bandages, the Russians received warning from a wounded soldier who came back from No Man's Land after witnessing men in masks transporting something. Knowing that the masks meant chemical warfare, the Russian commanding officer, Lt. Vladimir Kotlinsky, told the men they were most likely going to die the next day because they had no gas masks, and told them to try and use what was available. What they had was shirts and bandages, which they wrapped around their faces in an, unfortunately futile attempt, to counter the gas. To give you a better understanding of what those 100 "dead men" went through, the mixture of chlorine and bromine gas was extremely toxic, and such a huge cloud was sent to them that the grass turned black and gun metal corroded into rust. The chemicals in chlorine are corrosive, and when mixed in an area of moisture, (eyes and lungs) it turns into acid. It also chemically burned skin that was exposed, causing some of it to fall off later. So those 100 were literally melting from the inside out; that's why they were coughing up blood, vomit and bits of lung. They were dying agonizing deaths, to the point where the best movement they could manage was stumbling and shuffling. Between their horrific appearance and the fact they just got up from one of the biggest gas clouds used in the war, that's why 7,000 Germans swore they were retreating from the living dead.

This battle was probably the closest humans have ever come to “zombies” when you think about what the Russians looked like, wrapped in bandages, covered in blood, but they’re still alive coming for. If you really enjoy sabaton and want to learn more there is a Sabaton History channel that is fantastic. They tell the stories behind the songs. And to answer your question, there is no bad sabaton song.

Also one of those songs that you don't even want to think about! It's so unbelievable what happened in the war ... When Sabaton plays it live, it's one of those goosebumps moments. Take a look at one of the live versions and you will know what I mean. The bright green stage lighting with a lot of fog alone makes you shiver. And when Joakim comes on stage with a gas mask ... it's so surreal.

The battle was outside the fort most of the dead from the chemical attack was in the trenches outside the counter attack came from the flank that didn't get the full dose. The German did not expect resistance as the Russians did not have any protective gear at all. Chemical attacks on the Eastern fronts were fairly rare as the prevailing winds went the wrong way.

If I remember correctly it was one of the first uses of chlorine gas in warfare which when it gets into lung tissue creates hydrochloric acid so yeah, they where vomiting and coughing up blood but also coughing literally their lungs up from the acid desolving their lungs. This was one of the main reasons for banning gas in warfare. It’s affects are horrific.

Not only was it chlorine, but they added brome to it, having for effect to stick to body tissue, gluing the gas to people. So once in the lungs, yeah you were pretty much screwed, but even those with mask, if they had a parcel of skin exposed, they would still get burnt

The parts where it slows down for the lines "And that's when the Dead Men..." help drive that shambling, lurching feeling of SOMETHING coming for you. Every time I hear it, I can't help but set aside the head bobbing for jagged jerks and shambling. I may or may not get a little too into some of the songs lol. There's also a Russian version of this song, sang by a lad who goes under the name of Radio Tapok. The music video for that helps REALLY drive home how everything looked in this instance.

6:30 many gasses are naturally odorless and that’s we many gases that we produce are designed to have a smell so we either identify them by that smell or at the least know it’s there also the gas used a chlorine mixture that essentially broke down the water in the lungs and turned it into I believe hydrochloric acid so talk about one hell of a painful death

Chemical warfare has made such an impact upon human civilization that certain moments like these remind you of how deadly and how lethal the truth of the matter is. A comment below says something about the effects of the gas, that’s horrific. Turning the tide of battle as an undead soldier absolutely hell-bent on killing as many German soldiers as possible was really the only thing that they could do. And it was painful, agonizing. Yet they turned the Germans back through sheer willpower and rage.

I'm so glad you did this song! It's one of my absolute favorites. In concert, they crank up the smoke machines and green lighting to give an eerie feel and they come out in gas masks. Joakim actually wears a whole get up that spews smoke as he sings and walks around the stage. They also worked with Radio Tapok (a Russian youtuber and musician who often covers their songs by translating them into Russian) and had him release his version of this song and accompanying music vid a day before the album came out. It was, honestly, a galaxy brain marketing move on their part that embraced another creator and musician. They also had Tapok come out on stage with them unannounced in Moscow to sing this with them. He was dressed as one of the bloodied Russian soldiers that survived the gas. You can also hear the crowd go absolutely wild as they weren't expecting a Russian voice to sing the song to them. I highly recommend watching Radio Tapok's version of this as he does an excellent job. As well as the live in Moscow when they bring him on stage and they all sing together. You don't even have to make a reaction to them. I just think you would enjoy all the extra oomph it gives the song. And it's an appreciation of Sabaton's flair for pageantry while working with others rather than squabbling with them.

I just got to say because I think it will give you more perspective on the germans sheer terror. They didn't charge the Fort, they walked because they didn't expect anything to be alive. The poison gas at the time when released would burn the grass black and any exposed medals on guns would rust and corrode immediately. Flocks of birds would drop out of the sky. It didn't only affect people it would literally rot the battlefield in minutes. If you released that and saw the effects, THEN saw men covered in blood and choking up their lungs charging you...
