Saab 9-5 Water Pump Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I change the leaking waterpump and related seals on the Saab 9-5 Aero. This change is similar on all Saab B engines, like this B235, the B205, the B204, and others. As per the usual, I screw up a few times.

    I like the fact that you show almost the entire process of things, not just "undo this, mount that".

    I'll see if I can get one made sometime. I've just started a business earlier this year so I haven't had time to do much recording. The alternator is a big job on these! Difficult positioning. Congrats on getting through it!

    I have the standard cobra pipe. I notice one of your turbo valve lines is plugged with a bolt. What does that mod do?

  • @messengermotorworks6639

    @messengermotorworks6639

    Hi! That line is a baseline, or atmospheric pressure signal for the boost control. But when hooked up, it can get inaccurate readings because a tiny amount of vacuum can be applied to that part of the system, creating inconsistent performance because the sensor will read and adjust incorrectly. So disconnecting it, plugging the line and letting the sensor read open air was a solution found decades ago after the T7 cars hit the market and people started to mod them. It doesn't increase power, but makes it more consistent and some report slightly better response on tip-in.

    I did mine and it started to leak 2 weeks later, I'm not sure whts wrong but I'm thinking it's the rubber o rings that go on the small part that gos in the engine but idk, I put on the the new gasket with gasket sealer/maker so I don't think it's it's water pump itself any tips?

    Sorry for the slow reply! I missed your comment. The O-rings on the pipe that pushes into the block are a common trouble spot. I've seen a couple where it was obvious the outer one got changed, but not the inner. And since pulling the pump off moves that little pipe around, it can unseat the O-ring and it might not reseal because, well, it is worn and flat. That's the first place I'd look! As a side note, with a new gasket on the pump, a liquid sealer isn't necessary, but shouldn't hurt. So I doubt it is that as well.

    What is the name of that "snorkel thing" that feeds into the turbo? The one with the blowoff coming up out of the side...

  • @messengermotorworks6639

    @messengermotorworks6639

    You know, I'm not sure. People call it either "snorkel" or "cobra pipe." I imagine Saab called it something mundane like "turbo inlet pipe."

    One of my 'O' rings for the pressurized pipe is pretty loose, is that normal?? If not can I use something else to put around it?

  • @messengermotorworks6639

    @messengermotorworks6639

    Hi! If the o-ring is loose, you'll want to replace it because it could shift during install and that will guarantee a leak.. If it is still tight enough that it'll stay in place when reinstalling, you might be okay since it'll get compressed during installation.

    Good eye! Yep, those are prone to breaking. At one point 4 of them were broken, I managed to extract three of them and replace. That last one wouldn't budge. Fortunately, it doesn't leak.
