Only 200 aircraft? Are you serious ? Perhaps you wanted to say 200 planes in the first month? In total, the Americans lost 4,100 aircraft and 5,100 helicopters in Vietnam (their data), from August 1964 to January 1973, i.e. about 3 aircraft per day! In addition, one must take into account the losses of the US allies (they NEVER fight alone outside the American continent!) And the losses of South Vietnamese aviation - in 1973, it was the 4th largest in the world (after the USA, USSR and China) and numbered 2.000 aircraft - this is at its peak, and deliveries went before and after, making up for the losses. And almost all of them were lost (with the exception of those who managed to fly to Thailand before the fall). Therefore, the total number of losses of Western aviation in Vietnam in 1964-75 is approx. 13,000 aircraft and helicopters. With the help of the C - 75, 1293 aircraft were shot down, including 54 B-52 bombers. Don't look at US data. They are not accurate. Simple example - According to American data, the North Vietnamese launched more than 9000 missiles (despite the fact that only 7658 of them were delivered)

Very enlightening! As a co-op engineering student I worked at a S-band SAM-2 work-alike radar that the USAF had at Eglin AFB. Watching this brought back many memories.

The port of Hai Phong was mined, but it was not closed. Also, S125 was transported to VN via rail through China, but the Chinese delayed it in order to give the US an advantage. The Chinese had (quietly) switched to the US side by the early 1970. This is what is acknowledged in VN.

The majority of B-52s and other types of aircrafts lost in Vietnam were due to the Soviet S-75 Dvina missiles systems manned by Soviet and North Vietnamese personnel who were trained by Soviet military advisers. It has become the hero missile that defeated the US "invincible" B-52s.

I was part of a company with this system, and can tell you this video is on point. Cuban army mounted everything on T-55 and t-62 chasis making the system mobile and combat ready in 3min, if nothing breaks during transport.

As an electronics and communication engineering student , I really love when binkov taks about radars and SAM systems. Really love your work! Keep it up👍 Also would like if you made some videos on some Indian military content. Especially on 1971 indo pak wars and the improvisation made by the Indian navy

SAM 6? Do yo think here the SA-6 / 2K12 Kub? The SA-6/2K12 is an army air defense system. To understand how it works the army are defense before that the composition of army has to be know. Of course it can be made a video about technical details and capabilities but without the thing above a part of the video would be meaningless. If I get the chance I wish to finish the series about the PVO SAMs. S-75 S-125 S-200 S-300/400 are on the list. The S-350 can comes later because it is part of the new generation of SAMs which are fundamentally different from Cold War SAMs. I'm a bit sad that almost nobody noticed that not Binkov but a guest author made the video. (Me.)

This old Soviet System ( SA-2E) was manage to shot down a F-14 Tomcat, 1 Tornado and 1 F-15E...during desert storm operation 1991...in spite of that many SEAD planes were flying over Iraq...

Not exactly. The SA-2E is the Volkhov not the Dvina. The Volkhov had much more ant-jam capabilities and missiles with slightly better turning capabilities.

@@rhodium1096 Was partially outdated, the export of the S-300 has not been started in 1990. Even the WPACT countries got a very few S-300PMU. The next. gen air defense was not available. In fact the 2K22M and the Tor-M1 also were post Cold War systems.

@@hobizoli Akkor nem létezett cirkáló rakéta. Az irányított rakéta is kb. a AGM-12 Bullpup és a vége felé volt Walleye. Álcázás és csalik voltak.

@@molnibalage83 basically we already had people bringing all kinds of small AA radar up the mountains of the Ho Chi Minh Trail to test their capability, as well as studying the common flight routes of B52s as far back as 1968. We discoverred that the K860 radar set that comes with the Chinese supplied 57mm AA radar that can run on 10cm and 3cm radar frequencies, can slightly detect B52s insde the heavy jamming environment. There's a 30-page-manual on how to detect a B52 using this radar set, basically explained that base on how the jamm frequency moved and faded you can guess correctly its speed, altitude and headings. We then would shoot a salvo of SA-2 missiles based on this information to increase probability of a hit. We also developted a triangulation of radar positioning to counter B52Gs because they would heavily jam their fronts but not their sides. This tactic was also used on the normal P12 set of the SA-2 to counter AGM-45 equipped F4 Wild Weasel.

There is huge different with S75 was used by Libia at the same time with the Vietnam War. However, they are unable to take down any aircraft of Israel and even lost their weapons to the hand of the enemy.

If Binkov say yes, I'm in it. I guess you wish because of the F-117. I have to say 99.9% page on the Net is laughably inaccurate about the case. I really wish to made that video to clear things. Based on this video I guess almost nobody wish to see a video about the S-75M Volkhov.

@@molnibalage83 Thank you, yes i think that is a very poor covered and interesting story.

1) According to the Russian/Soviet doctrine, the main role of air defense is not to shoot down planes; it was to preserve the ground assets from air attacks and keep them functional or at least possible to repair and redeploy. If you down a plane while doing it - good for you! But downing a plane was merely a bonus... 2) By the end of the Vietnam war, the Vietnamese army had a set of tactics to counter "wild weasels"... For example, the Americans on wild weasel missions have reported following: they would detect a radar and start following it, directing themselves towards it. Suddenly, that radar would go silent and another one, on different position would appear. So, they would redirect to it... As soon as they would focus on that radar, it too would go silent, but a third one would appear. Naturally, they would go for that one instead. After a while, that radar would go dark... After a few moments, all three radars would suddenly be on and launching missiles from different directions simultaneously!

The end part is just a myth. Such accurate coordination and timing was not possible without IADS eq. not even with that. Using only radio, telephones and speech considering the lag in communication made this impossible.

@@ivanstepanovic1327 USA sources are saying many funny things about Videtnam, like M3.0 speed missile while on the alt. of the fighters the missile barely could reach M2.3... I know how these systems worked. This was not possible. For this you need a today's level GUI and real time digital data link and shared tactical image. Doing this with hand drawn plots is not possible.

True Binkov is cover up the success of the USAF Wild Weasel, US Navy and Marine aviation successes in counter and destroying SA 2 Fan song radar sam sites, P 35 Bar lock radar and Son 9 Fire can AAA radars, it get to the point that the North Vietnamese SA 2 Sam troopers fear turning on there radar because of Weasel and Iron hands attacking there sites, even the North Vietnamese Air Defense Commander went down to Sam 2 Sam site and forced the Fang song operators to fired, because the crews fear AGM 45 and AGM 78 missiles destroying their Radar Van and Complexes. A Soviet General mention the delivery 95 SA 2 launchers to North Vietnam and 7500 missiles, after Linebacker 2 the North Vietnamese only have 39 launchers left.

I am asking because USA can repell an attack from all countries in the world combined. USA have naval, space and technological superiority. In order for them to be invaded is this superiority to be destroyed. But rest of the world is too weak to do that.

As I see once again, contrary to western popularised ideas, the Soviets were even at that time capable of producing complex electronic systems maybe not as sophisticated as those in the US but still perfectly valid. I know people from Tunisia who in the 1970's studied computing in the USSR! At the time we had a cooperation program with them i education, they built many technical universities for us at a time when the west just helped with nice talk.

Yes, roughly this is accurate. But there was a clear difference during the Cold War. The level of the SAGE in 1954-60 was far beyond the capabililes of the Soviets in the same era. Interestingly the Vektor and Senezh IADS used literally the same display as the SAGE but 15+ years later. But that time it could be installed the system using only some cabins. But while in '80s Patriot batteries could share the whole radar image (contacts) with other Patriot batteries the S-300 had much more rigid structure. The command battery with the Big Bird radar shared only the target coordinates of assigned targets and missile batteries could not do this with each other.

@@thelovertunisia Nope, this is not true. * The T-64A was so groundbreaking in '60s which is hard to describe. Many countries believed that AP shells has so large firepower which makes impossible to design a real armor for tanks. This leaded to tanks with literally paper armor like the AMX-30 or Leo1. Then arrived the T-64A and changed everything. This was pure quality. * They developed the dual seeker Igla much before any imaging or pseudo imaging seeker as a new level of IRCCM. They did not want to rely only qty. They wanted quality. * When you will see the evolution of their SAMs you will understand they aimed always the quality. Many westers systems did not achieve and had the features as Soviets. This is just another false stereotype about the Russians. I f they believe only quantity they never would develop a new tank or any weapon system. Yes, the 2nd and 3rd echelon units had old eq. but this was also true for Western states. In fact the 1st echelon units of NATO minors even in '80s used such tanks as Centurion. A post WWII tank....

@@molnibalage83 In this example you are absolutely right. I was thinking in more general terms, at least according to popular belief that Soviet tech (lorries tanks etc..) were simpler but mors rugged that western tech which is too sophisticated and therefore high in maintenance and repair.

What jammers are you thinking here exactly? F-4s used the ALQ-119 what IAF got from US. The F-16s also carried pod (ALQ-119 later ALQ-131), the F-15 had inbuilt US jammer.

@@darkoneforce2 ALQ-119 I'm pretty sure it was used. Against the SA-6/2K12 in 1973 IAF feared to use the VGPO type of jamming because they did not trust. Their fear was that it makes just a better target the plane. The ALQ-131 could do new kind of deception jamming against the Dvina but against that partially the Volhkov was prepared. The combination of leading - jamming and many other factors made complex the jamming topic. Itself the whole EW is not an easy topic.

Turned out to be a decent SAM system for its day, knocked down a couple u2, chased a few SR71, away. Where the SR71 would either stay outside the SAM envelope or they would travel above mach 3.15.

The SA-2 family never chased away any SR-71. On my channel I plan to make w Mythbusting about SR-71 because what is commonly on the Net is totally false or badly interpreted.

@@militavia-air-defense-aircraft well known that chinese sa2 chased them, out of chinese airspace and engaged the drone version of the sr71. These sr71 were deployed to japan at the time. Several sr71 pilots are on recording talking about it. Its one of the reasons they retired the A12

If you check the the engagement zone diagrams you simply cant find such engagement envelop diagram regarding 1000 m/s. Because the max. target speed with T/T was 640 m/s. And even up to 640 m/s the zone was restricted compared to half-leading zone. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKON2tWFobazmqw.html Yes, many times were launched missile on SR-71 and they never had a real chance to down it because of this. It was too fast. Even without the noise jamming engaging such a fast cross flying target was close to impossible. Nobody even "chased" the SR-71. They flew wherever they want as long as they met only with any version of the SA-2. Following the El Dorado Canyon a Volhov launched a missile against the SR-71 and they missed as usual. (And one of them broke into pieces in the turn.) But the SR-71 avoided the the only operational SA-5 / S-200E site. The export of the SA-5 did not happened until the mid '80s. So as I have said until that SR-71 flew wherever they want except over the USSR, WPACT or where the politics banned it.

They are very good in their field but their knowledge is outdated and based on 30-40+ year old knowledge. Which is now declassified also in RUS.

S-75 is horribly outdated. And China operate Russian missiles system like S-300/S-400 as well. Chinese knew the limitations of those systems, a few S-300 is not gonna to do any favor. Try to avoid a shooting war is your best bet.

Like how many S-300s be needed to defend an island (e.g. Mindanao or Luzon) or several islands which contain cities like Cebu and Samar and Leyte? Should the S300/400s/500s be in the Spratlys?

Yes, the is the point of the series. Following these it would be much more understandable the S-300 and in fact even the SA-8 --> SA-15 transition.
