Here to apologize for not watching it first. Sorry.
I carried a M28-2, 4", for 25 years out of a 28 year career as a peace officer. Walked away from three shootings in that time. The old 28 never let me down. I will never part with it. Recently turned down a grand for it. My nephew will have it, along with my other weapons when I'm gone. Best shooting revolver I have.

What's the difference between the 28 & 27? My friends 5" 27-2 is the most balanced revolver I've ever held.. shoots great too.. I have a 686+ but I think I like his 27-2 a little more

Can I ask what you carried the other 3 years? And what was your opinion on it?

@@beardineric6558 OH boy, don't get me started. But here goes. We got a new chief of police from another agency, and the first thing he did was want us to carry autoloaders. Guess he was a fan of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard 'cuz he wanted us to carry the Beretta 92. They were junk. Some broke on the range. One went full auto during qualifying. The one issued to me shot 2ft low and 1ft left. Many of us hated those pistols! Then a list of "approved " weapons was created, and the Glock was one of the few on the list. A detective buddy of mine had a 1st US import Glock 19. I bought it from him and qualified with it. I didn't like all the plastic and no hammer, but it shot better than the piece of junk I was issued. I retired a couple of years later, and the first thing I did was sell that hunk of Tupperware. I don't care for striker fire plastic pistols with no safety or hammer and such. If I'm going carry an autoloader, it's going to be a 1911A1 in 45 Auto. Served me well for just under 3 tours in Vietnam. So there's your answer. And I'm sure that the Glock fanboys will wanting to burn me at the stake, but at my age I don't care. 😒

@@joeyphillips1181 The 27 is a finely finished weapon with deep bluing and polish. Whereas the 28 is a satin finish utility version. Both share the same basic parts, but the 27 is the "pretty boy" of the two.

@@anangryranger oh wow so it’s was your final years in the force you did have your beloved S&W. I’d be so tight too. You probably felt like you lost a partner in a way since it had been at your side for so long. Your Glock comments don’t upset me despite having a 43x as my CC. I personally haven’t had issues with it. But everybody has their preferences. I’m actually looking at the Stainless Springfield Garrison 45 ACP 1911 right now. I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on it. Anyways, thank you for the story! And thank you for your service ❤️🙏🏻
As a British person and someone who Loved shooting Revolvers in the early 80s, before our Government went mad with their restrictions on Firearms, I would just like to say that these Types of Revolvers are so Timeless and I am so envious of the way you guys get to shoot and own them. Never Ever give up your 2nd Amendment. God Bless our Brothers and Sisters across The Pond 🙏🙏
Pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, firing pin on the hammer and no silly lock. In other words, Smith & Wesson perfection!

Yes, if S&W wants to make an actual "Classic" line of their revolvers, they should have all the features you mention.
There's just something so timelessly badass about a .357 magnum revolver.
It's not just nostalgia. Those older S&Ws represent the high point of double action revolver aesthetics. A bit like wooden sailing ships that reached their peak of elegance just before they became obsolete.

I would feel mush safer if I knew the local police were still armed with these and experienced in it's use. Instead of the spray and pray theory the are now training under. six aimed and deliberate are more deadly than 17 rapid fire. Clay

Wooden sailboats are obsolete? As a wooden boat shipwright, I take offense to that comment. 😂
My first hand-gun was a 6" model 28, that I bought in 1973 and I still have it. It shoots true and is reliable as hell. I used to carry it on our hunting lease in Texas, first two round were shot shells for snakes, the rest were for feral hogs. It worked well for both. Thanks for the video on the venerable model 28. I'll never sell that gun.
A great fire arm for sure . When I policed in the 60's I carried a Smith & Wesson model 19 .357 . I still have a model 29 four inch barrel 44 Magnum .

So the philosophy then was to practice with .38s and carry .357s on duty, right? I recall that being a factor at the Newhall CA, CHP shootout.
@d7dun1010
6 ай бұрын
Not always! Many of us carried .38spl +P and +P+ in 158gr. Some of us had two of the above in the first two chambers and the rest Lawman 125gr .357. Some of us went full bore .357. A lot easier to shoot .357s through a Model 28 or Python than a Model 19. Most of us had the Model 19 in 4" barrel. Exceptions of course. A lot more went wrong with Newhall than the loads they carried.
Wish Smith still made guns like this.

Just picked one up this last fall. Love it! Mid-80's model.
The model 28 - 4" was the first revolver I carried when I started in Law Enforcement in 1976. I then graduated up to the Model 19-4". I spent 37 years wearing the badge; when I finally hung it up in 2013. I still own two model 19s; a model 19-3 - 4" and a model 19 -4 - 2 1/2 " Love them!
My model 28 with a 4" barrel was made in 1965. Such a great handgun!! Your video is great, thank you very much!!
I *LOVE* shooting my 28-2! Sweet shootin' iron. Thanks for the video, Hickok45!
I absolutely love mine. The double action is amazing. Very smooth and accurate. ❤
Even with all of the fine new high capacity semi autos, I still enjoy shooting the old revolvers. Probably because I was born before 54. That’s a fine revolver Hickok

First of all, well done Hickok!!! I have a model 28 with 6” barrel and large magnum grips, but your.4” with the best looking stag grips ever....you win 👍
Another motivation to have and keep is the industrial artistry with which these great firearms are endowed.
I just want to say I love all your videos hickok45, life is good!

Love the .357. Own several. Thanks for posting Hickok.
A Legend WITH a Legend! A Classic WITH a Classic!
I love seeing your vids combined with stories arround the irons. Keep going on and stay healthy. Greetings from Berlin Klaus
I have a 4 inch Highway Patrolman my mom used as a home security device in Alaska. Love the trigger and the solid feel of it.
Those grips are perfect on that revolver!
Really nice revolver yours is beautiful they were extremely popular and durable, thank you for sharing it with us
Hitting that long gong is so impressive. With a revolver! I am always impressed.
I have a "GSP" stamped 4 inch Model 28 that I carried for years as a peace officer. It never let me down, had a great DA trigger, and was very accurate.
My dad bought one of these new after finishing the police academy in Gboro NC in the late 50's. I think with PD discount paid around 60 bucks for it. He carried it until the early 70's. I own it now. Still have the original box. Thanks for the two videos.
The first revolver I bought was a no-dash Model 28. I love it! It's accurate and comfortable to shoot.
I have a 4" barrel, nickle plated, Model 28 I used for police duty carry for 15 years before transitioning to a semi-auto in 1988. Such a fantastic handgun! I have often thought that, of all my handguns, if I could only keep one, it would be the Model 28. I also have a S&W Model 19, 2.5" barrel, nickle plated, which was my off duty carry handgun (I still carry it often) and it would be my 2nd choice! An N frame revolver is not difficult to carry all day IF you have a proper belt rig. I wouldn't want to carry it all day attached to the belt I hold my pants up with. For duty use, I was wearing a 2-1/4" wide Sam Browne belt with keepers. They were very popular with police officers as long as we carried revolvers. The Model 27 is a more refined revolver, but they were outside the price range for most officers (we had to buy our own handguns) and certainly out of the price range for departments which issued revolvers. I chose the K frame Model 19 for off duty carry for the lighter weight and more compact size. The L frame split the difference but they didn't come along until the early 80s and few officers bought one. Some of the new guys had them, and they are great guns, but the writing was on the wall. By 1986 we were allowed to transition to semi-autos and by 1991, new officers were required to use semi-autos.

@@d7dun1010 I have a couple S&W semi auto handguns. A model 6904 and 3914 DAO. The 6904 was a backup for my primary plainclothes handgun, a SIG P228. The 3914 DAO was an off duty carry (and still is in my concealed carry selection) I was a police officer in a large city known for crappy winters and hot, humid summers. Nickle plating was important for corrosion resistance. Stainless revolvers were available, but way too pricey at that time. By the time I went into plainclothes duty in 1990, the manufacturers had some really good, durable finishes for semi-autos and nickle plating was no longer needed as much. (IMO) But I will say that my nickle plated revolvers still look extremely good, while the semi-autos look "battle worn" but not rusty. I don't mind, it's all honest "patina"...I'm a little battle worn myself (but not rusty).
Had a Model 28 Highway Patrolman while in college and loved it. It also had the "teflon" finish as opposed to blue finish. The N frame 357 is so sweet! Good vibes!
The shooting characteristics of this sixgun are superb.
Great video on the S&W Pre-28. I was lucky enough to get my birth year gun. It is a Model 28 No Dash that shipped in July 1960. It has a 6” barrel and is ANIB. I added a Tyler T-grip to it, which makes the Magna grips fit my hand better, and was a popular addition for police back then. BTW, those Sambar Stag grips on your gun are definitely “drool worthy”, and give your gun the been there, done that look! Thanks for sharing.
I bought one of these back when I was a police officer and was into collecting Smith & Wesson revolvers. I got a good deal on one, and it’s been great. Mine had the original wooden grips on it, I took those off and put some Hogue grips on it that locked it into my hand when shooting it. It’s my favorite Smith that I own.
over 14 years from that "I'll be darned, another buffalo!" video. Glad to see that hickok45 is still here. GunTube legend.
Missed part 1. Watched in. Now watching this. Tough to not enjoy good revolver content, you make some of if not the best! Good mix of talking and shooting!
N frame. As a SHERIFF'S DEPUTY I carried one as a duty weapon. Great gun !
Good to see a cool gun for your first video of 2024!!
My father carried a model 28 for years in the Border Patrol, absolutely awesome pistol! Thanks for the awesome video Hickok! I am addicted to your channel!!! :-)
I am 1 yr older than your Highway Patrolman, I grew up around all the "old" guns. I prefer the older guns just like I prefer the older rock groups and cars. I grew up in a great era. Life IS good!
The 28-2 4 inch is an awesome hunting pistol, have used mine for hunting for a few decades now. This is a gun I can allways depend on, hard to say about the new age guns !!!!
I had a 28-2 6’ that was my favorite handgun of all time. I will get another.
I love these old revolvers.
You are an amazing shot and a great mentor!
I have a 4" M28 P&R. I love shooting it. Currently it is wearing a set of Miculek target grips but it wore a beautiful pair of S&W wood target grips for a long time. I fell in love with the first M28 I saw back in the 70's and I still love the N frame Smiths and especially the M28s. I recently sold my 5" M27. I have a 4" stainless model like that in .44 spcl., my all time favorite caliber. I recently sold my 1950 Target .44 spcl w/6 1/2 inch barrel. I've had several 44 Mag S&W in various barrel lengths. I guess what I'm saying that I'm one dinosaur that still loves old obsolete N frame revolvers. Thankfully, obsolete isn't the same thing as useless or I would have been gone a long time ago. I just don't get to shoot as much as I'd like to anymore.
Thank you Hickok, that's a sweet revolver😊👍
That is one gorgeous revolver, sir. Ty for sharing, guys.
I bought a Georgia State Patrol surplus 4" Model 28 during my last year at college (1977). I put a set of Herrett's oversized walnut grips on it and had it re-chambered to 44 Special. My total outlay was $200 at a time when a Model 29 ran $400 (when you could find them).
That’s a lovely revolver grip.
What a beautiful piece
Pleasure to hear from a real old-school 'murrica, greetings from Poland
I had the six and a half inch version and loved it.
Beautiful revolver @hickok45! Made when Smith and Wesson actually cared about quality.
I love all the classic S&W revolvers. Dad swore by them. It had to be a Smith. The only other acceptable pistol in his eyes was the 1911. I have two 27's, and one 28, it was my dad's, so it has a special place in my heart, as do all the guns I got from him. I have other .357 S&W's, a 649, a few 66's, and a 360 SC. My dad had a good friend who was an Iowa State Trooper, and he could hook dad up with really good police trade ins, one of the 66's is stamped ISP, it's one of my favorites.
This elderly gentleman doesn't miss a beat
Actually the Border Patrol Inspectors (Later changed to Agents) were issued when I EOD'd either a Smith & Wesson Heavy Barrel .38 Special or a Colt Heavy Barrel .38 Special, both with a 4" barrel. The issued duty round was a Remington 38/44 cartridge with an approximate muzzle velocity of ~ 910 f/s which today would be a +P round. It was a 158 grain round nose lead projectile with, I suspect, some other metal alloyed to resist leading. There were approximately 1500 Inspectors in the Patrol back then with 1,000 carrying either the S&W or Colt as above and 500 carrying a S&W Model 19 4". The Model 19 carriers were issued 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter .357 ammunition for duty carry. However, some Agents were authorized to carry their personally owned S&W Model 28s.
An Army buddy (late 80’s) had a 28 in .41 mag. Lovely shooting gun in an underrated, now forgotten, caliber.

I wonder who did the conversion work on it. I think Hamilton Bowen did some of them and also some .41 Spcl conversions. I think Starline even made brass for the 41 spcl for a while.
Finally got my paws on a 27-2. Love it. Still love my model 19 too.
Hi there, just love the grips on that pistol look like they'll last a thousand years and probably will, really reliable weapon a real classic i reckon, thanks for showing it off,atb Dave
I own a S&W .38-.44 Heavy Duty revolver. Purchased by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in 1940. A genuine "Highway Patrolman".👍👍👍👍👍
Hickok I think I remember story I heard about the Highway Patrolman on the barrel. The 357 was developed to penetrate car bodies. Like you say the Troopers everywhere carried the 4 and 6:inch magnums.
Youve got impressive aim! Awesome
Beautiful Piece !!!
I just bought an N frame Model 610 in 10mm. It is very accurate and light recoiling because of the weight.
Hickok and Bill Jordan: 2 men that make an N frame look like a K frame.
that is one beautiful pistol
I like those grips on that gun. They go good together,
I have your Smith's twin, though mine is a year younger. We gave dad a 6" model 28 for his birthday in 1969. I have that one here as well, though I'm just the family custodian. Dad was Captain of the security force at Idaho National Laboratory, started there after he got back from a working vacation in the vicinity of The Punch Bowl in Korea, retired in 85 when AEC replaced the force with contractor security force...
A 7 or 8 shot .357 magnum (great) is an awesome caliber. If you were to run across a highly trained individual who's armed with a revolver, he might be someone the criminal element would be quite surprised!! Awesome firearm, sir!!!
Combat Magnum Model 66, .357 six shot 4.25". Stellar weapon. Still valuable.
My first S&W was a Model 28 4” that I carried on the Police Force and traded it in on a Model 19 6”.
My Grandfather's Duty Gun was a S&W Model of 1905 Hand Ejector (4th Model Change) chambered in the 32-20 Winchester Cartridge. He purchased his pistol in the mid 20s (at that time the police dept didn't issue guns to officers), and carried it through his career. He retired from the PD in the late 50s, but was immediately recruited by the Sheriff's Dept, and worked as a Deputy until 72'. He still carried his original gun. After his death in 84', the gun unfortunately passed to an Uncle, who was a real POS (a raging Alcoholic fired from some really good jobs due to his alcoholism). At some point, he pawned off Grandpa's guns for booze, and in spite of our best efforts, we were unable to track down and recover them. I don't know if it's possible, as both the gun and the cartridge are pretty rare and nearly obsolete, but I would dearly love to see you review the cartridge and gun if possible. 32-20 was originally a rifle cartridge, but it was small enough and not being a high pressure round, that it was capable of being used in a revolver. Obviously, it wasn't a rip snorter of a cartridge ballistically, and that's one reason it drifted towards near obsolescence. Winchester, Remington, Black Hills and HSM still make ammunition, and apparently, 32-20 has seen a resurgence in the Cowboy Action Shooting community. A few manufacturers make rifles (usually reproduction) in the cartridge, and Winchester still offers the chambering in their Model 1882 Lever Action. I'm not sure if any revolvers are still in production.
Even though we lost chef lynja at least we have this guy still around
I have two N-frames, a six inch model 27 that I bought in 1977, and a six inch 29 that I bought in the mid-80's.
I really like the "homely" satin finish very much. I have a K-22 from the same year. And it's gorgeous. Not that the highly polished Model 14 I have from 10 years later isn't gorgeous too... just in a different way.
Have a model 28 original paper work gold box.Original owner didn't register it with company.Beautiful functional in every way.
I love my 4” 28-2 everything except the gap between the cylinder and frame lol . Haven’t been able to hurt that thing yet definitely sufficient size for handling all 357 .
Always a great video when I get your notification chief! Could you do one on the new S&W SD9 2.0?
I have a 28 dash 2 4 inch. Love it
Well, well, well......the double actions on the N-frame clean up very well with an action job, and make it much more fun to shoot ! A set of Jordan "trooper" grips make the N-frame much nicer to handle , as well. Another video, yes ?
I really like that grip
